Several major land reclamation projects such as the Inchon International Airport construction, Songdo New City construction, LNG Tank and LPG storage construction are underway along the coastal line of Inchon in Korea. This study was carried out to investigate the feasible use of waste lime in the land reclamation projects. Waste lime (hydrated lime) used in this study is produced as a by-product in the manufacturing process of $Na_2CO_3$ from local chemical factory in Inchon. This study presents the characteristics of bearing capacity and settlement on the ground formed by layers of waste lime and dredged soil. From the laboratory and in-situ plate load test, the ultimate bearing capacity by in-situ test was 1.25~1.37 times higher than that of the theoretical ultimate bearing capacity. Based on the settlement analysis by Magset- II, the total settlement of layered ground steadly increased up to the ratio of waste lime depth 0.2 and therefore rapidly increased with the increase of waste lime depth. The results of the present study indicate that the ratio of waste lime depth for reclamation work is about 0.2.
In this study, the possibility of utilizing carbide lime waste, obtained from the generation of acetylene process, as a alkali activator of blast furnace slag cement was investigated. The physical and chemical analysis of the carbide lime waste was studied and three types lime waste in order to investigate behaviour as alkali activator were used. Lime wastes were added 0, 10, 20 and 30 wt.% in blast furnace slag and blast furnace slag containing lime waste were added 0, 10, 30 and 50 wt.% in OPC. As a result of analysis of hydration properties, in the case of calcium hydroxide rehydrated after heat treatment at $800^{\circ}C$, it was higher hydration rate than other specimens. For the results of compressive strength test, when lime waste passed 325 mesh sieve and rehydrated calcium hydroxide were used, it was higher compressive strength than OPC from hydration 7days. At OPC50 wt.%-BFS45 wt.%-AA5 wt.% system using lime waste of 325 mesh under, the highest compressive strength appeared.
This experiment was carried out to investigate the effect of lime and phosphorus on soil and yield of rice plants in acid sulfate soil. 1. Lime requirement plus phosphorus (20Kg/10a) plot showed 60% increased in yield. 2. The effect of increase was 36% in lime and 15% in phosphorus. 3. pH and Eh were reversed each other by lime application, and lime and phosphorus increased soil reduction. 4. Sixty two percent of root was distributed in top soil (0-5cm) of control plot while it spreaed in sub soil (5-10cm) with high level of lime and phosphorus plot. 5. Soil pH reached maximum at maximum tillering stage and decreased there after approching near to original pH. But lime requirement was about half of original one. 6. There was significant positive correlation between yield silica or phosphorus in soil, which were high with increase of pH. 7. The application of lime and phosphorus increased nitrogen content in plants. When contents of phosphorus in rice plants were high the yield of rice was increased.
This study was conducted to find out the effect of a lime stabilized slaughterhouse waste(LSW) on the growth of chinese cabbage and soil pH. Two levels of the lime stabilized slaughterhouse waste treatment, 169 and $338kg\;10a^{-1}$, with N-P-K fertilization were tested, and treatments of N-P-K and N-P-K with slaked lime were included in the experiment as a control. Fresh weight of chinese cabbage at harvest was not significantly different among the treatments. However, in the LSW treatment of $169kg\;10a^{-1}$, fresh weight of chinese cabbage was 5% higher comparing to the N-P-K treatment. Contents of N, P, and K in chinese cabbage were higher in the LSW treatments in comparison to the control treatments. Competitive inhibition of Mg uptake by Ca in the treatments of LSW and lime was apparent. Soil pH was increased by the application of LSW, and the increase in the LSW treatment of $169kg\;10a^{-1}$ was nearly the same as the soil pH increase in the slaked lime treatment. The lime stabilized slaughterhouse waste can be considered as a potential soil amendment for amelioration of soil acidity and supply of organic matter as well.
The disposal problem of waste lime which is a residual product of lime industry have caused a lots of arguments in the past few years. Further more, waste lime contains a high moisture content which causes the disposal of waste lime is a great difficulty. The purpose of this study is to investigate for the effective dewatering solutions by placing various prefabricated vertical drains. The moisture content and degree of consolidation, pore water pressure, changes of settlement, bearing capacity with various vertical drains in waste lime were analyzed. The laboratory test results indicate that PBD is 2 times higher than circular drain in coefficient of consolidation. Based on the laboratory test results, settlement, pore water pressure, and dewatering measurements are shown in similar tendency. It is considered that PBD can drain primitive pore water much efficiently. The picture of SEM shows that circular drain filter has a serious clogging problem in comparison with PBD. In conclusion, PBD holds a superiority in waste lime's ground improvement and dewatering pore water pressure from the waste lime sludge. Also, circular drain is desired for some modification in its filtering system.
This experiment was conducted to investigate the influence of amounts of lime dressed on the growth of rice by the treatment of percolation and nonpercolation in the acid sulphate soil. And also analysis of soil chemical components after treatment was carried out. The results obtained were summarized as follows: 1. In the initial stage of growth, number of tillers and plant length showed no distinct differences between the treatments of percolation and nonpercolation, but after August the effect of lime appeared and the percolation treatment was more effective than the nonpercolation. 2. Lime dressing affected good influence on the panicles, grain per panicles and the rate of grain formation, and the treatment of percolation showed better results than nonpercolation. 3. If the yield of rough rice in the control (nonpercolation and lime dressing) was 100, it was 194 in the treatment of nonpercolation 12me/100gr of lime dressed, 268 in the treatment of percolation-4me/100gr of lime and 315 in the 8me/100gr-percolation. 4. Lime dressing affected good influence on the control of Helminthosporium leaf spots. 5. In the case of lime dressing, amounts of available phosphate and soluble silicon dioxide were increased, but ferrous ion ($Fe^{{+}{+}}$) were decreased.

This study was conducted to select proper soil amendments in order to reduce the occurrence of potato scab and maintaining soil health by applications of dolomitic lime, sulfur, potassium sulfate, shell meal fertilizer, silicate fertilizer, lime nitrogen and ammonium sulfate fertilizer in different pH levels of volcanic ash soil with continuous cultivation of potato. In potassium sulfate-applied plot with a low soil pH, the incidence rate and disease severity of scab were lowest at 84.4% and 28.4%, respectively. Those were lowest among the treatments. Value of potato scab control was 12.3% and marketable yield of potato was highest at 93.2%. In lime nitrogen-applied plot (60 kg/10a), the incidence rate was low at 38.3%, and control value was 23.8% and marketable yield of potato was high at 66.3%. In relatively higher pH soils, the incidence rate of scab was lowest at 38.3% in the lime nitrogen-applied plot (60 kg/10a). Value of potato scab control was 23.8%, which was four times higher than that in sulfur-applied plot. Marketable yield of potato was highest at 66.3% in the lime nitrogen-applied plot. In the lime nitrogen plot infected with potato scab pathogen such as S. acidiscabies and S. scabiei were remarkably lower than other soil amendments at 2.5, 5, and 10 g/L concentrations of lime nitrogen using Glucose Yeast Malt (GYM) medium. In conclusion, this study suggests that potassium sulfate application in low pH soil (less than pH 5) and lime nitrogen application in relatively higher pH soil (more than pH 6) before potato seeding might be helpful to reduce the occurrence of potato scab.
The rate and extent of decomposition of rice straw and compost in an acid sulfate soil amended with urea and lime and incubated under aerobic and anaerobic(flooded) conditions were investigated in the laboratory. Results are summarized as follows: 1. The rate of compost(alone) decomposition in a flooded soil was more than twice as high as all other treatments, which included rice straw+urea, rice straw+lime, rice straw (alone), and compost+lime. Lime appeared to suppress the decomposition of compost in a flooded soil but actually enhanced its decomposition under aerobic conditions. 2. Compost decomposition in both anaerobic and aerobic environments was characterized by single maximum peak rates of $CO_2$ evolution that were reached soon after the start of incubation. 3. Both urea and lime greatly increased the rate and extent of rice straw decomposition in the soil when incubated aerobically, although urea had a greater effect than did liming. Decomposition rates were characterized by the appearance of two maximum peak rates, a greater primary peak and a smaller secondary peak. 4. The percent decomposition of rice straw in soil incubated aerobically was approximately half (10.8%) that of compost(23.1%). However, percent decomposition of these substrates in soil amended with lime was essentially the same; i.e., rice straw+lime (29.4%) and compost+lime(31.6%). 5. There is a need to investigate the possible interaction between the addition of lime (pH) and supplemental nitrogen applied to acid sulfate soils and how this interaction might affect the decomposition of organic wastes and residues.

Italian ryegrass and rye were cultivated andlime materials were distributed for improvement of soil fertility. The results were as follows; 1. Forage crops were cultivatedand lime materials were distributed on the continuous cropping field of peanut. The organic matter content of the expermentalplot cultivating Italian ryegrass was only 1.25%. The organic matter content of soil cultivated Italian ryegrass after distributedmagnesium lime was 1.37% and that of soil cultivated Italian ryegrass after distributed gypsum was 1.30%. It was highcontent comparing to that of soil distributed lime materials only. The organic matter content of soil cultivated rye after distributed gypsum was 1.77%. 2. The phosphate content of soil cutivated Italian ryegrass was 332ppm. The phosphate content ofsoil cultivated Italian ryegrass after distributed magnesium lime was 34Oppm and that of soil cultivated Italian ryegrass afterdistributed gypsum was 31 2ppm. The phosphate content of soil cultivated rye only was 386ppm. The phosphate content ofsoil cultivated rye after distributed gypsum was 41 8ppm. This phosphate content was lower than that of soil distributed limematerials only. 3. The phytotoxin content of soil cultivated Italian ryegrass after distributed magnesium lime was decreased to17.7% and that of soil cultivated Italian ryegrass after distributed gypsum was decreased to 25.3%. The phytotoxin content ofsoil cultivated rye after distributed magnesium lime was decreased to 12.0% and that of soil cultivated rye after distributedgypsum was decreased to 12.8% comparing to the phytotoxin content of soil distributed lime materials only. Italian ryegrasswas effective to decrease phytotoxin among the forage crops and gypsum was effective among the lime materials. 4. Abacterial wilt and a late spot of peanut which were known as, main reason of continuous cropping failure were surveyed.lnccidence of a bacterial wilt was 3.4% in the plot cultivated Italian ryegrass only and that was 2.9% in the plot cultivated ryeonly. lnccidence of a bacterial wilt was 2.5% in the plot cultivated Italian ryegrass after distributed magnesium lime and thatwas 2.3% in the plot cultivated rye after distributed gypsum. Inccidence plot cultivated forage crops was lower than that of plotdistributed lime materials. 5. Inccidence of a late spot was high in the plot cultivated forage crops ony, but it was low in the plotcultivated forage crops after distributed lime materials comparing to that of the control plot. 6. The growth and yield of peanutwere bad in the plot cultivated forage crops only comparing to the control plot distributed lime materials only. These resultswere same in the plot cultivated rye after distributed lime materials, but the growth and yield were grown up in the plotcultured Italian ryegrass after distributed lime materials.
