  • The computational flow analysis using LES technique was carried out to investigate the flow characteristics of a sirocco fan under the maximum flowrate condition. The commercial SC/Tetra software was used for this unsteady and three-dimensional numerical analysis. In consequence, because a flow is unstable within the range of about 50% of a housing depth from a bellmouth around the cutoff region, the passing flow through the blade cascade occurred on the X-Y plane is a slow or a reverse with approaching to the housing inlet. Also, the secondary flow shows on the radial plane of a housing, and its vortex center exists within about 33% of a housing depth from a bellmouth except the cutoff region. Moreover, the flow occurring on the exit plane of a sirocco fan shows a complex secondary flow.

  • LES(Large eddy simulation) of breakup and droplet atomization of a liquid jet into cross turbulent flow was performed. Two phase flow of gas and liquid phases were modeled by the mixed numerical scheme of both Eulerian and Lagrangian methods for gas and liquid droplet respectively. The breakup process of a liquid column and droplets was observed by implementing the blob-KH wave breakup model. The penetration depth into cross flow was comparable with experimental data for several variants of the liquid-gas momentum flux ratio by varying liquid injection velocity. SMD(Sauter Mean Diameter) distribution downstream of jet was analyzed.

  • Large eddy simulation was conducted for flow development in a chamber with wall injection which simulates the cold flow in an idealized hybrid rocket motor. It was found that a peculiar timescale, roughly corresponding to St~0.5, resides in the flowfield resulting from the interaction between the main oxidizer and wall injected flows. However, the fact that this time characteristics is absent in the temperature field in the vicinity of the wall indicates that even a small regression rate renders the passive scalar, such as temperature, dissimilar to the velocity field. This implies that a classical approach, which assumes that constant turbulent Prandtl number, should be replaced by a more sophisticated turbulence models to accurately predict the temperature field in the hybrid motor.

  • In this paper, a new generation method for ship induced waves is proposed using the fully non-linear 3-D numerical model with non-reflected wave generation system (LES-WASS-3D). A ship induced wave generated by the newly proposed method is examined in comparison with that obtained by an empirical formula. It is then shown that there is a good agreement in free surface the elevation between them. As a result, it is revealed that a ship induced wave in a 3-D numerical wave field can be simulated well using LES-WASS-3D.

  • A hybrid method is presented for efficient computation of turbulent flow noise at low Mach numbers. In this method, the turbulent flow field is computed by incompressible large eddy simulation (LES), while the acoustic field is computed with the linearized perturbed compressible equations (LPCE) derived in this study. Since LPCE is computed on the rather coarse acoustic grid with the flow variables and source term obtained by the incompressible LES, the computational efficiency of calculation is greatly enhanced. Furthermore, LPCE suppress the instability of perturbed vortical mode and therefore secure consistent and stable acoustic solutions. The proposed LES/LPCE hybrid method is applied to three low Mach number turbulent flow noise problems: i) circular cylinder, ii) isolated flat plate, and iii) interaction between cylinder wake and airfoil. The computed results are closely compared with the experimental measurements.

  • In the present study, the pressure coefficient of a cubic building model is numerically simulated. Three turbulence models of standard ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$, RNG ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ and LES are adopted and the results are compared with the available experimental data. From the results, it has been found that RNG ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model and LES turbulence model were shown to predict fairly well the experimental pressure coefficient. In contrast, the results of the standard ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model showed large discrepancies in pressure coefficient on the side and top surfaces of the cubic building, which limits the applicability of the standard ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model on wind engineering.

  • In the present study, turbulent flows around cubic and L-shape buildings were simulated numerically. Standard ${\kappa}$-$\varepsilon$, RNG ${\kappa}$-$\varepsilon$, LES turbulence models were adopted for the present simulation. The wind pressure coefficients from these results were compared with the available experimental data. The result of RNG ${\kappa}$-$\varepsilon$ and LES turbulent models gave better prediction than that of standard ${\kappa}$-$\varepsilon$ turbulent model which is widely used in the turbulent flow simulation.

  • A large eddy simulation (LES) is performed for turbulent pipe flow. The simulation code is constructed by using a general coordinate system based on the physical contravariant velocity components. The effects of grid fineness which can be well prediction of turbulent behavior in near wall region is investigated. The subgrid scale turbulent models are applied and validated emphasis is placed on the flow details of turbulent pipe flow The calculated Reynolds number is 360 based on the wall shear velocity and the inlet pipe diameter. The predicted turbulent statistics are evaluated by comparing with the DNS data of turbulent pipe flow Performed by Eggels et al. The agreement of LES with DNS data is shown to be satisfactory. The proper grid fineness of the well prediction of turbulent pipe flow is suggested and the turbulent behavior is analyzed by depict the contour plot of fluctuating velocity components.

  • This study has numerically investigated the flame-acoustics interactions in the turbulent partially premixed flame field. In the present approach, in order to analyze the combustion instability, the present approach has employed the LES-based combustion model as well as the Helmholtz solver. Computations are made for the validation case of the partially premixed LIMOUSINE burner. In terms of the FFT data, numerical results are compared with experimental data. Moreover, Helmholtz equation in frequency domain is solved by combining CFD field data including the flight time from a nozzle to the flame zone. Based on numerical results, the detailed discussions are made for the essential features of the combustion instability encountered in the partially premixed burner.

  • This study has investigated the turbulent flow around a square cylinder by using LES (large eddy simulation). Numerical simulations are performed for turbulent flow fields with Re = 22,000. The computed results are in good agreement with existing computational and experimental data. The time-averaged and phase-averaged turbulent statistics around a square cylinder are discussed. Total 20 phase bins extracted from one cycle period showed detailed wake structures of the phase-averaged flow field. The center of Karman vortex sheets did not deviated ${\pm}0.5$ from centerline of square cylinder while moving downstream.
