Two white light emitting diodes(LEDs) were fabricated by using two kinds of yellow phosphor, YAG:Ce and $(Sr,Ba)_2SiO4:Eu$, and their spectroscopic properties were analyzed as a function of temperature from room temperature to $80^{\circ}C$. The asymmetric double sigmoidal function was applied to both blue and yellow peaks of the emitting spectrum to obtain the center wavelength, the amplitude, the half width, and the skewness parameters. According to this analysis, the center wavelength of the blue peak shifted to longer wavelength while that of the yellow peak shifted to shorter wavelength. In addition, some of the skewness parameters were found to increase upon heating, which indicates that spectrum asymmetry becomes enhanced at higher temperatures. The changes in the color coordinates and the luminous efficacy were larger for the case of silicate-based white LED. These results suggest that the silicate-based white LED is inferior to the YAG-based white LED from the viewpoint of color stability, efficacy and color rendering index.
Today's research has been focused on changing the light source from filament to LED for luminarie illumination to overcome the shortcoming of a filament. The purpose of this research is to make an appropriate high power LED package structure for luminarie. We simulated radiation patterns of the various structures by the ray tracing simulator (Light Tools), and also analyzed the radiation patterns using an LED test system (OL770). As we increased an inner reflector angle, the radiation pattern split into two peaks and the angle between two peaks became larger. In addition, when we increased an outer reflector angle, the angle between side peaks gradually decreased, while it increased again when the angle reach $50^{\circ}$. These results could be understood from the ray tracing of the light reflected from two reflectors. We made the high power LED package for luminarie on the condition of the optimized structure which was made by ray tracing simulation results, and we measured the radiation patterns by using an LED test system, and these results were well matched to the simulation results.
The absorption coefficient and backscattering properties of phytoplankton were calculated from the Mie theory. Given a simple case that phytoplankton and mineral particles are the only constitutions in seawater, the reflectance $b_b({\lambda})/[a({\lambda})+b_b({\lambda})]$was analyzed. Then the chlorophyll concentrations were estimated from remote sensing OC2 algorithm. The results show that reflectance in short wavelength region is more sensitive to the Chl variation; High mineral concentrations in seawater have significant influence on the reflectance spectrum; the existence of high mineral concentration may result in the mistake in chlorophyll estimation from OC2 algorithm.
In the case of a AIGalnP/GaP system rectangular parallelepiped high brightness LED which has side walls etched to be slanted off the vertical direction, we have studied the effects of lossy electrodes and material absorption and etching depth and angle of side walls on its light extraction efficiency. If LEDs have no electrodes, in order to obtain an 80% light extraction efficiency of a TIP (truncated inverted pyramid) LED, the side-etched LEDs should have an etching angle of 22$^{\circ}$~45$^{\circ}$ and an etching depth of 8~17% of a dice height and an absorption coefficient less than 1 $cm^{-1}$ / In case of etching depth of 16~39% of a dice height, we can obtain a 90% light extraction efficiency of a TIP LED. But when LEDs have two electrodes and no absorption loss, in order to obtain an 80% light extraction efficiency of a TIP LEBs, the side-etched LEDs should have an etching angle of 25$^{\circ}$-45$^{\circ}$ and an etching depth of 30~36% of a dice height. In case of etching depth of 57~71% of a dice height, we can obtain a 90% light extraction efficiency of a TIP LED.
Optical simulation methods were applied to the edge-lit LED backlight for LCD TV applications in order to optimize the optical structure of the light guide plate(LGP), and thus to improve the uniformity properties by removing the bright spots caused by LED's. The edge-lit LED backlight consisted of three white LED's with a lamp cover, a light guide plate, and a reflection film. When there was no pattern on the entrance side surface of the LGP, the illuminance uniformity was sensitively dependent on the distance d between the LED and the entrance surface. The illuminance uniformity increased with d but its increasing rate slowed down when d was beyond ~ 1.5 mm. When micro-patterns such as a lenticular lens array (LLA) or a serration pattern were formed on the entrance surface, the illuminance uniformity was improved substantially even for the case of very small d. At the same simulation condition, the lightguide with serration pattern showed a better uniformity than that with LLA pattern. Additional improvement could be achieved by changing the refractive index of the micro-patterns. These results suggest that using micro-patterns is a very effective way to reduce the bright spots due to their refracting function for the concentrated incident rays onto the LGP.

The Adaptive Front-lighting System (AFS) is a part of the active safety system, providing optimized vision to the driver during night time and other poor-sight conditions of the road by automatic adaptation of lighting to environmental and traffic conditions. Basically, an AFS provides four different modes of the passing beam as designated in an United Nations Economic Commission for Europe regulation (ECE324-R123): neutral state or country light (Class C), urban light (Class V), highway light (Class E), and adverse weather light (Class W). In this paper, we first present an optics design for an AFS system capable of producing the Class C/V/E/W patterns requiring only on/off modulation of multi-array LEDs with no need for any additional mechanical components. The AFS optics consists of two separated modules, cutoff and spread; the cutoff module lights a narrow central area with high luminous intensity, satisfying the cutoff regulation, and the spread module forms a wide spread beam of low luminous intensity. Each module consists of two major parts; the first converts a discretely positioned LED array into a full-filled area emitting light source plane, and the second projects the light source plane to a 25 m away target plane. With the combination of these two optics modules, the four beam patterns are formed by simple on/off modulation of multi-array LEDs. Then we report the development of a prototype that was demonstrated to provide the four beam patterns.
A novel fiber optic solution is provided to efficiently mix visible colors. Full color synthesis was achieved utilizing a novel $3{\times}1$ hard polymer clad fiber (HPCF) coupler along with red, green and blue (RGB) light emitting diode (LED) primaries. Varying the intensities of RGB LEDs that are coupled to three input ports, the device rendered a full color with an ultra wide CIE color gamut. Potential applications in pica-projection displays and LED backlights will be discussed.
The study investigated the effects of base curve radius art the fit of thin, mid-water contact lenses. It was found that central corneal curvature(as measured with the keratometer) was not predictive of the best fitting base curve. Proper lens fit may be the single most important factor that ultimately determines the success of contact lens wear. Comfort, vision, and physiological response are all dependent on the fit of the lens. The percent of optimal fits was highest with the 8.4 mm base curve lens for all three ranges of keratometry values. When fit with the 8.4 mm lens. For most eyes, fitting a flatter lens led to greater decentration, decreased comfort, and no increase in lens movement. The 8.4 mm lens was found to provide on "optimal" fit in over 60% of eyes tested and a fit of "good" or "better" in nearly 90% of eyes tested. Comparisons of different manufactures' lens found that similiar lenses do not always fit in the same way due to subtle design and production differences. Therefore, different products may require different base curve radii to fit the same patient. This is even true when water content, center thickness, and diameter are approximately the same. A praditioner fitting a new patient in this lenses should begin with the 8.4 mm base curve radius.
In this study, the traditional electron-blocking layer (EBL) in (In,Ga)N/GaN light-emitting diodes is replaced by a circular EBL that is the same size as the n-pad. The three-dimensional (3D) nonlinear Poisson, drift-diffusion, and continuity equations are adopted to simulate current transport in the LED and its characteristics. The results indicate that the local carrier-density distribution obtained for the circular EBL design is more uniform than that for the traditional EBL design. This improves the uniformity of local radiative recombination and local internal quantum efficiency (IQE) at high injection levels, which leads to a higher lumped IQE and lower efficiency droop. With the circular EBL, the lumped IQE is higher in the outer active region and lower in the active region under the n-pad. Since most emissions from the active region under the n-pad are absorbed by the n-pad, obviously, an LED with a circular EBL will have a higher external quantum efficiency (EQE). The results also show that this LED works at lower applied voltages.

In this paper, we have studied a method of forming a line beam using a UV LED. The existing linear-type UV LED curing optical system is composed of several cylindrical lenses, but problems such as optical system alignment, enlargement of the module, efficiency, etc. may arise in the future. As an alternative to these problems, a bar-type TIR lens having a freeform surface only in the y-axis direction is designed, to verify that it shows advantages in maximum illuminance, uniformity of illuminance, and flux efficiency.
