Flat Fluorescent Lamp(EEL) and LCD TV Backlight Using EEL as a Light Source (면광원 램프 및 이를 이용한 LCD TV용 백라이트)

  • A flat fluorescent lamp (FFL) was developed as a light source for LCD TV Backlight. The channels of FFL were realized by forming the flat glass at high temperature. The performance of the backlight with FFL was shown to improve by optimizing the FFL channel profile that has elliptical shape, 4.4 mm height and 1.4 mm sealing distance. In this paper, the brightness uniformity of LCD TV backlights was investigated by optical simulation of FFL channel profiles. The brightness of LCD TV using FFL with the optimized channel profile was shown to be $576\;cd/m^2$.

Novel Impulsive Driving Schemes for 120Hz LCD Panels

  • Two new impulsive driving technologies for 120Hz liquid crystal display (LCD) panels are proposed to improve moving picture quality. One technology generates the dark frame using an adder and a shifter simply without using any look up tables (LUTs). It results in a cost effective impulsive scheme with motion picture quality comparable to that of high speed driving. The other is a backlight flashing method designed to avoid ghost images. The issue of ghost images caused by the slow response time of liquid crystal (LC) is solved by means of 120Hz overdriving and 120Hz backlight flashing. Using the perceived blur edge time (PBET) metric, measured moving picture response time (MPRT) values were 10.8ms and 4.4ms, respectively, while that of 120Hz high speed driving was 10.1ms.

  • LCD(Liquid Crystal Display)는 표시장치로 실용화된 후 많은 상품에 적용되고 있다 그러나 LCD는 자체 발광 능력이 없으므로 그 후면에서 LCD 화면을 밝혀주는 BLU(Backlight Unit)를 필요로 한다. BLU는 내부 광원으로 밝기가 균일한 평면광을 만들어 LCD 화면을 균일하게 면조사하는 역할을 한다. LCD의 표시 품질을 향상시키기 위해, 균일한 평면광을 만들어내는 BLU를 제작하기 위한 다양한 방법이 개발되고 있다. 본 논문에서는 이러한 BLU를 제작하는 툴(Tool)과 제작린 BLU가 생성하는 평면광의 휘도 분포를 예측하는 시뮬레이터를 제안함으로써 BLU 개발에 소요되는 시간 및 비용을 단축할 수 있도록 한다.

  • In this paper, the active backlight control technology with data processing algorithm was developed in order to improve image quality for IPS-mode LCD-TV applications. The image blinking problem caused by repeatedly abrupt change of the backlight luminance was solved by algorithms-Fba(Flexible Boundary algorithm) and Cfa(Cumulative Feedback algorithm)-and the optimized number and space of backlight dimming steps based on perception. In the IPS-mode 42" TFT-LCD panel, the dynamic contrast ratio can be more than twice the typical level by means of lower block luminance and higher white luminance. Additionally, Power consumption and LCD temperature was decreased.

  • The piezoelectric transformer converters electrical energy into mechanical energy, It is high efficiency and small size transformer for high output voltage. The piezoelectric transformer operates the resonance frequency and the output voltage waveform is close to sine wave. Therefore, it is suitable for driving the LCD backlight in the notebook computer. In this paper, we discussed about the inverter which os driving piezoelectric transformer by generating sine wave through LC resonance after converting input DC voltage to the gate signal of FET. As the result of experiments, it was showed that the resonance frequency and voltage gain of the piezoelectric transformer was proportional to the load variation, and voltage gain was independent of the input voltage variation.

  • This paper presents a simple LCD CCFL-backlight resonant inverter. First, in introduction various conventional inverter topologies for the CCFL are reviewed, briefly, and then, in each main subject the proposed inverter is explained, in detail. The proposed inverter utilizes a new class-E resonant circuit with a single-switch and is controlled by a single-chip microcontroller, which is very simple. Moreover, the proposed inverter can ensure resonant zero voltage switching (ZVS) under most operating conditions and performs simply the digital dimming control. It is shown through experimental results that the proposed inverter has good performance for the LCD CCFL-backlight.

  • we analyzed multiple ray tracing in the highly scattering optical transmission(HSOT) polymer plate by means of the Monte carlo simulation. Light transmission behavior in the light guide was simulated by a 3-dimensional ray tracing program considering scattering angle given by the Mie theory and mean free path. To improve the uniformity of the conventional HSOT backlight unit, We employed additionally dot patterns. For the proposed structure, we calculated the light transmission behavior and obtained a bright and uniform backlight unit for a large size LCD panel of more than 12 inch.

  • We proposed a new Mercury-free flat fluorescent lamp (MFFL) for LCD backlight which has the scanning ability to reduce the blurring edges of moving images. We expanded the single cell MFFL with 2.2 inch diagonal size into the multi-cell MFFL for the 32-inch LCD-TV backlight application, and examined its response characteristics and proposed a driving scheme for scanning.

  • 본 논문은 LCD Backlight 인버터 구동 응용을 위한 다중 램프 점등 시 트랜스포머 소자 수 감소를 이를 수 있는 전류평형 트랜스포머의 구조 및 형상에 관한 것으로서, 제안된 트랜스포머 구조는 기존의 트랜스포머 구조 방식에 비해 소자 수가 줄어들어, LCD Backlight 인버터의 원가를 저감 할 수 있는 트랜스포머 구조 및 형상에 관한 것이다.
