삼성의 LCD-SPVA 및 -PSVA모드 개발사(開發史)와 액정주입 ODF 공정

  • 90년대 초 LCD (Liquid Crystal Display)는 연관된 반도체 산업과 함께 제2산업의 쌀로 불리며 정부와 관련업계의 높은 관심 속에 큰 성장을 이루었다. 삼성은 일본 기업에 비해 LCD 개발을 늦게 시작했지만 패널 대형화와 넓은 광시야각을 구현한 PVA (Patterned Vertical Alignment) 모드 (mode)를 실현하고, 여기에 더하여 측면 시인성 문제까지 해결한 공정이 단순하며 높은 대비비를 구현하는 SPVA (Super Patterned Vertical Alignment) 및 PSVA (Polymer-Stabilized Vertical Alignment) 모드를 개발하였다. 이와 동시에 새로운 액정 주입 방식인 ODF (One Drop Filling) 기술을 최초로 양산에 접목함으로써 LCD 산업에서 경쟁사들이 따라올 수 없는 훨씬 앞선 제1 주자가 되었다. 이 보고서는 삼성이 SPVA와 PSVA 모드를 역경 속에서 타사들과 어떻게 경쟁하며 발전시켜 왔는가에 대한 내용과 ODF 기술에 대해 삼성의 고유 자산권을 침해하지 않는 범위 내에서 서술하고자 한다. ※ 대비비: 화면의 백색상태 (white state)와 암흑 상태 (black state)의 광비 (光比)

  • 정보화 사회의 발전과 더불어 디스플레이는 CRT의 고성능화와 병행해 각종 평판 디스플레이의 전개와 실용화가 진행되어 왔다. TV용은 CRT (cathod ray tube)방식이 시장의 90% 이상을 차지하고 있으며, 앞으로도 연간 약 3%의 성장이 예상된다. CRT는 많은 공간 소비와 높은 소비전력 유해파 등으로 인하여 가정용 TV의 경우 PDP가 컴퓨터 모니터는 LCD방식이 디스플레이 시장의 주역을 담당하고 있으며, 그 성능, 비용, 용도에 따라 나뉘어 빠른 비율로 성정해 갈 것으로 예상된다. 이러한 여러 가지 평판 디스플레이들은 특성에 따라 EL과 FED는 10인치 이하의 소형 디스플레이에 주로 사용되어 지며, LCD는 10인치 이하에서부터 30인치까지의 소·중형, CRT는 10인치 이상 40인치 이하의 중·대형에 사용되어 지고, PDP는 30인치 이상의 대형 디스플레이에 사용된다. 대형 PDP나 LCD는 휘도를 높이고 양질의 영상 표현을 위해서는 cell-gap의 균일성이 요구되어 진다. cell-gap의 측정은 제품이 거의 완성 단계 있을 때 이루어져야 함으로 비접촉식이 필연적이며, 실시간 적이어야만 가능하다.   • Good mechanical properties of thin-film transistors on plastic substrates are an essential parameter in the development of robust flexible displays. In this paper, a careful investigation is carried out on TFT backplane on plastic substrates under cyclic bending conditions. Bending modes of tensile and compressive as well as parallel and perpendicular orientation-dependent bending of channel have been analyzed carefully. This analysis will be helpful in knowing the electro-mechanical performance boundaries of the TFT devices so as to determine the bending limitations of our flexible displays.

  • We hereby report novel driving scheme to eliminate effect of "residual" image sticking (RRI) problem which arises due to hysteresis problem in Thin Film Transistor (TFT) in AMOLED Displays. The driving scheme applies "black" voltage after every data voltage period in order to drive AMOLED in uni-direction. The system can be easily implemented with 120 Hz driving scheme which is well matured in AMLCD industries. Our analyses show systematic evaluation of the problem and thereby solving it by simple methods which will be significantly effective of driving OLED towards mass manufacturing stage.

  • New technology that reduces photolithography process steps from 4 to 3 in fabrication of TFT LCD is introduced. The core technology for 3mask-TFTs is the lift-off process [1], by which the PAS and PXL layer are formed simultaneously. To evaluate the stability of this lift-off process, outgases from photo resist on a substrate during ITO deposition and the quality of ITO film were analyzed and the conventional photo resist stripper machine which operates lift-off process was examined to see its ability to reduce particle problems of the machine. Through the development of total process and design for TFTs using this 3mask technology, panels in TN and IPS modes which exhibit same performances of a display using a conventional process were achieved. In addition, this process was already verified in the mass production line and now some products are being produced by the 3mask technology.

  • We have designed cost competitive pixel structures for high performance mobile PVA LCDs. These new structures significantly bring down the price by the use of a conventional polarizer for lowest possible cost. A 4.3" prototype based on these techniques was built, achieving the world's highest mobile display contrast ratio of 1200:1, while maintaining wide viewing angle with no loss of transmittance

  • A 30-inch WQXGA+ TFT-LCD Monitor has been developed based on in-plane switching mode with multi-domain. This product adopts Cu electrode which, in spite of low resistivity, was not applied to TFT LCD products because of productivity and reliability problems etc. This low resistivity material makes it possible to clear the problem caused by line delay in such high resolution TFT-LCDs. As a results of successful adoption of innovative materials and technologies, our world's largest TFT-LCD Monitor has best performance for high information display.
