  • The orientational and dynamic behavior of liquid crystal molecules on the alignment layer surfaces of liquid crystal display (LCD) devices is crucial to their performance, but there are only a few methods of experimentally elucidating the interactions between the liquid crystals and the alignment layers. Inspired by the natural and technical similarities between membrane proteins in lipid bilayers and liquid crystals in LCDs, we employed solid-state NMR methodologies originally developed for the study of membrane proteins in lipid bilayers for the in-situ analysis of liquid crystal display panels. • The most important parameter for TV application of LCD is a fast switching time for the display of moving image. To achieve faster switching time, the novel LC single materials with large dielectric anisotropies ($16{\sim}20$), high clearing temperatures ($195.5{\sim}237.4^{\circ}C$), broad nematic ranges (up to 169.9 $^{\circ}C$) and high birefringence ($0.254{\sim}0.2200$) were developed. KUR-series LC mixtures blended these single materials having significantly higher clearing temperatures and dielectric anisotropy values compared with conventional LC mixture. Especially, their clearing temperatures are $10{\sim}30^{\circ}C$ higher than their host mixture. These LC mixtures showing about lOms of high-speed switching time in Tv/Monitor of TFT LCD, is short enough to be addressed in a single time frame of 60Hz (16.7 ms). The threshold voltage $V_{th}$ was low enough to operate at a driving voltage of 5 V. The VHR values were found to be high enough for TFT-LCD in wide temperature range. Our novel LC mixtures are suitable materials for the inclusion in to LC mixtures for TV application of TN-LCD

  • This paper describes a fabrication method for high transmittance panel using newly designed polarizer and liquid crystal with a high dielectric anisotropy (${\Delta}{\varepsilon}$). To enhance the transmittance of the panel without contrast ratio reduction, new polarizer with high transmittance and high ${\Delta}{\varepsilon}$ liquid crystal were used. The transmittance of the liquid crystal display (LCD) panel employed by a new polarizer was increased by 6% over that of the panel with a conventional polarizer and liquid crystal in LCD industry.

  • In this paper, an accurate ray-tracing based visual analysis method of lenticular 3D liquid liquid crystal display (LCDs) and some analysis results are presented. In the developed method, the geometric optics analysis is performed on the single 3D unit pixel of 3D lenticular LCD. It is shown that the display characteristics of 3D lenticular LCD panels of arbitrary size can be evaluated through the 3D unit pixel analysis. The analysis results of a few representative structures of 3D lenticular LCDs are compared.

  • The residual DC phenomena in the in-plane switching(IPS)-liquid crystal display(LCD) by the voltage-transmittance (V-T) and capacitance-voltage (C-V) hysteresis method on rubbed polyimide (PI) surfaces were studied. We found that the residual DC voltage in the IPS-LCD was decreasing with the increasing concentration of cyano LCs. The residual DC voltage of the IPS-LCD can be improved by the high polarity of cyano LCs.

  • Effect of contamination of liquid crystal on the electrical behavior of liquid crystal display (LCD) by spilled components from color filter layer was investigated. It is noted that the level of contamination was different following the kind of liquid crystal and organic layers. Transmittance curve of LCD cell was shifted by spilled components of color filter and BM materials. C-V curve also showed different behavior following color filter type. The results obtained show the image sticking of LCD can be varied by pairing liquid crystal with color filter materials.

  • In liquid crystal displays, the display mode that represents initial liquid crystal alignment and method of applying voltage, mainly determines the image quality of display. Recently we have developed the fringe-field switching (FFS) mode exhibiting high image quality. In this paper, a pixel concept, manufacturing process, materials, and electro-optic characteristics of the FFS mode comparing with conventional in-plane switching mode, and its possible application to reflective type are discussed.

  • This paper proposes a transflective liquid crystal display (LCD) in a whole-pixel switchable configuration with a high aperture ratio using an electrophoretic particle layer (EPL). The switchable transflective LCD consisted of the liquid crystal layer as a display unit, and the EPL as a switchable mirror. The switching of the EPL between the mirror for the reflective mode and the transparency for the transmissive mode was performed by controlling electrophoretic nanoparticles with an applied voltage in a three-electrode structure. The single pixel was used as the whole transmissive or reflective mode that corresponded to the switchable EPL mirror. Thus, a transflective LCD with a high aperture ratio was obtained.

  • We proposed a transflective liquid crystal display (LCD) with high aperture ratio using an electrophoretic particle layer (EPL). The transflective LCD consisted of the stacked LC layer and EPL which was acted as a switchable mirror under in-plane electrode structure. Without separation of reflective part and transmissive part in one pixel, a modeselectable display device can be obtained.
