High Speed Response Time of Nematic Liquid Crystal Mixtures for LCD Monitor and TV Applications

  • The most important parameter for TV application of LCD is a fast switching time for the display of moving image. To achieve faster switching time, the novel LC single materials with large dielectric anisotropies ($16{\sim}20$), high clearing temperatures ($195.5{\sim}237.4^{\circ}C$), broad nematic ranges (up to 169.9 $^{\circ}C$) and high birefringence ($0.254{\sim}0.2200$) were developed. KUR-series LC mixtures blended these single materials having significantly higher clearing temperatures and dielectric anisotropy values compared with conventional LC mixture. Especially, their clearing temperatures are $10{\sim}30^{\circ}C$ higher than their host mixture. These LC mixtures showing about lOms of high-speed switching time in Tv/Monitor of TFT LCD, is short enough to be addressed in a single time frame of 60Hz (16.7 ms). The threshold voltage $V_{th}$ was low enough to operate at a driving voltage of 5 V. The VHR values were found to be high enough for TFT-LCD in wide temperature range. Our novel LC mixtures are suitable materials for the inclusion in to LC mixtures for TV application of TN-LCD

  • Generally, the compromising electromagnetic emanations are generated from LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) monitor which is typical output component of computer. Because display information transmitted to LCD monitor is included in these emanations, there are risks about information leakage of monitor by eavesdropping of leaked signal. So, analysis about possibility of information leakage is necessary because electromagnetic security through the electromagnetic emanations is being at issue. In this paper, the possibility of display information leakage are demonstrated by analyzing the electromagnetic emanations from desktop and laptop monitors. The characteristics of leaked signal from LCD monitor is verified by analyzing display mechanism and the electromagnetic emanations are measured in the long distance by eavesdropping experiment. Also, threat of information leakage is confirmed by recovering display information with several signal processing technique and comprising with target display.

  • Driver IC is one of the key components on the LCD monitor and LCD/TV. The function of the driver IC is to transfer and forward the input signals to LCD panel module. Inside driver IC, there are several operating units which process the input signals and generate the appropriate size and resolution to the LCD panel module. LCD panel module will display these input signals. However, there are some difficulties which driver IC designer, LCD monitor and LCD/TV maker will face. Thus, this article addresses the function and difficulties on driver IC.

Recent Liquid Crystal Material Development for VA-TFT

  • A large size flat panel LCD-TV must fulfill different requirements than a desktop LCD-monitor: The contrast must be much larger, the viewing angle should be as wide as possible and the switching times must be shorter to allow moving pictures to be displayed naturally. The "Vertically Aligned" technology is most promising to realize such a product. LC-material development for this technology began at Merck about 10 years ago. New materials based on the 1,1,6,7-tetrafluoroindane skeleton were recently synthesized via ortho-metallation and intramolecular Heck cyclization followed by an oxidative fluorination procedure. The materials offer improved properties over liquid crystals currently employed in flat panel LCD-TVs.

  • In the TFT-LCD(Thin Film Transistor-Liquid Crystal Display) panel manufacturing industry, SAMSUNG, a late entry, can catch up to leading first mover, SHARP. The changes the note, monitor, TV, and mobile markets in the TFT-LCD industry were studied using a system analysis method. In addition, the fast response time technology in SAMSUNG TFT-LCD technology was developed using the TRIZ method. For example, a new liquid crystal mixture of a wide view angle and fast response time were developed by doping a new high birefringence liquid crystal material in a base mixture using the contradiction method and su-field method of TRIZ. The response time of a new liquid crystal mixture was improved to approximately 60%(16.2ms with base LC mixture, 9.8ms with a new LC mixture).

  • We propose a method for evaluating the image quality of color liquid crystal display(LCD) monitors by using the polychromatic modulation transfer function(PMTF), which is calculated from the modulation transfer function(MTF) weighted by the overall color response of the system including the test LCD monitor. We confirm that experimental results using the PMTF agree well with simulated results of the PMTF of a color LCD monitor by using three bar targets with different amplitudes and three elementary colors such as red(R), green(G), and blue(B). As a results, we should choose the PMTF instead of the white color MTF or monochromatic MTF in order to evaluate correctly the image quality of color LCD monitors.

  • The injection-molded plastic parts have many surface defects: warpage, weldline, flowmark, zetting, scratching, shading and so on. As weldline was one of the major surface defects in the case of desktop monitor, warpage and surface shrinkage are the bigger problems of LCD monitor in the pursuit of light weight and thinner thickness of parts. Some measures to improve these defects were introduced in this paper. Based on these, the laboratory work to find out the optimum processing conditions and to get the best parts was repeated injection moulding try-out after reflecting these improvements. The defects of warpage and surface shrinkage was significantly improved after the improvements in the case of the 20.1 inch even if in the 15 and 17inch case the warpage size was a lttle over the allowed specification because of not taking the measure for parts design within the allowable limits from the required specification in the cause of cost down.

  • Color filter is a fundamental and necessary component to make a full-color TFT-LCD, its quality intensively influence the performance of TFT-LCD in the application of Notebook Computer, Monitor and Television. Color filter in chromaticity also make an effect for human visual system and video enjoyment. Recently, mother glass size is enlarged for demand of large-size panels and new generation color .filter technology for large-size liquid crystal cell panels is also developed. Here, latest generation color filter technology in TFT-LCD will be discussed.

  • Injection molded plastic parts have many surface defcts: Warpage, wedline, flowmark, zetting, scratching, shading and so on. In the desktop mnitor's case, Weld line have been one of the main surface defects. Nowadays in the pursuit of light weight of parts, one of the big problems of LCD Monitor thinks Warpage and surface shrinkage. In this paper, we introduce some instances for prevevting these defestcs in the side of mould drawing, parts drawing and processing condition. Based on these, we tried to find out the optimum processing conditions through repeatedly tried injection moulding after reflecting these instances.

  • An 18.1" Thin Film Transistor Liquid Crystal Display (TFT LCD) monitor adopting high brightness In Plane Switching (IPS) technology was realized. While conventional IPS structure used a Chromium (Cr) and Molybdenum (Mo) for a drain electrode, Indium Tin Oxide (ITO) was proposed and verified in this paper. Black sticky micropeal spacers were introduced for the reduction of light scattering phenomena, which was observed at dark room with the conventional micropeal spacers. With the proposed method, more than 10 % aperture ratio was increased and the excellent image quality was obtained.
