  • We investigate nematic liquid crystal (NLC) alignment on ion-beam exposed ZnO films. ZnO is optically transparent material in the visible range. We optimized the deposition parameters such as deposition temperature and gas ratio for high transmittance and resistivity. Using ion-beam treated ZnO films, LC cells are fabricated and the conditions such as exposure energy and time for uniform alignment are found. The NLC molecules align parallel to the ion-beam exposure direction. The electro-optic and response characteristics show the possibility of application of this method in liquid crystal display.

  • This paper introduces homogeneous liquid crystal (LC) orientations on chemically modulated polystyrene (PS) surfaces using various ion beam (IB) exposure times. Transparent PS was replaced with conventional polyimide material. As a non-contact process, the IB bombardment process induced LC orientation parallel to the IB process. Through x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, it was shown that the chemical compositional changes of the IB-irradiated PS surfaces were determined as a function of IB exposure time. Using this analysis, the optimal IB bombardment condition was determined at an IB exposure time of up to 15 seconds. Moreover, thermal stability on IB-irradiated PS surfaces were carried out which showed that a relatively high IB exposure time induced a thermally stable LC alignment property.

  • The control of high pretilt angle for nematic liquid crystal (NLC) with negative dielectric anisotropy on the rubbed blending polyimide (PI) of homeotropic and homogeneous alignment surface was studied. High LC pretilt angle on the rubbing blending polyimide of homeotropic PI and SE-7492 surface was measured and the LC pretilt angle increased wish blending ratio and rubbing strength. However, the low LC pretilt angle on the rubbed blending polyimide of homeotropic PI and SE-150 surface was measured. The high pretilt angle of NLC can be achieved by using the blending PI surface.

  • We propose a method to achieve both wide viewing angle (WVA) and narrow viewing angle (NVA) characteristics with a single liquid crystal (LC) panel and a single backlight system by using 3-terminal electrode structure. We could control the viewing angle of a single LC cell by using the horizontal or vertical alignment of LC for the dark state at the front.

  • The electrical performances of liquid crystal (LC) cells with chloromethylated polyimide (CMPI) alignment layers were investigated. The CMPI layer was previously reported as a multifunctional layer that does role of LC alignment and planarization layer as well as photo-alignment material with high photosensitivity and excellent thermal stability. The capacitance-voltage (C-V) characteristics of LC cells with CMPI alignment layers were measured. Mechanical rubbing of the CMPI layer did not generate much difference in residual DC when compared to commercial PI. However, the LC cell with photo-oxidation CMPI layer shows a high residual DC value and a corresponding low voltage holding ratio (VHR) due to the photo-induced ionic charges on the alignment layer.

  • We studied liquid crystal (LC) alignment with ion beam (IB) on polyimide and electro-optical characteristics of twisted nematic (TN)-liquid crystal display (LCD) on the polyimide surface using obliquely ion beam (IB) exposure with new IB type equipment. A good uniform alignment of the nematic liquid crystal (NLC) alignment with the ion beam exposure on the polyimide surface was observed. In addition, it can be achieved the good EO properties of the ion-beam-aligned TN-LCD on polyimide surface. Also, the EO characteristics of the ion-beam-aligned TN-LCD on a polyimide (PI) surface with ion beam exposure using new type IB equipment is same or more superior than ion-beam-aligned TN-LCD on a polyimide (PI) surface with ion beam exposure using Kaufman-type Ar ion gun.

  • This paper introduces 6,13-bis(triisopropylsilylethynyl) pentacene (TIPS pentacene) doped liquid crystal (LC) alignment properties on a rubbed polyimide (PI) layer as a function of the doping concentration of TIPS pentacene. Pretilt angles, photomicrographs, and electro-optical properties of TIPS pentacene doped LCs were comparable to those of pure LCs. However, TIPS pentacene in a LC medium supported twisted nematic-liquid crystal displays (TN-LCDs) to improve electro-optical properties. The threshold voltages observed in the TN cells decreased as the TIPS pentacene concentration increased. In addition, suitable response times were observed in TN cells.

  • Considerable attention has been focused on the applications of flexible liquid crystal (LC)-based displays because of their many potential advantages, such as portability, durability, light weight, thin packaging, flexibility, and low power consumption. To develop flexible LCDs that are capable of delivering high-quality moving images, like conventional glass-substrate LCDs, the LC device structure must have a stable alignment layer of LC molecules, concurrently support uniform cell gaps, and tightly bind two flexible substrates under external tension. However, stable LC molecular alignment has not been achieved because of the layerless LC alignment, and consequently high-quality images cannot be guaranteed. To solve these critical problems, we have proposed a PDMS pixel-wall based bonding method via the IB irradiation was developed for fasten the two substrates together strongly and maintain uniform cell gaps. The effect of the IB irradiation on PDMS with PI surface was also evaluated by side structure configuration and a result of x-ray photoelectron spectroscopic analysis of PDMS interlayer as a function of binder with substrates. large number of PDMS pixel-walls are tightly fastened to the surface of each flexible substrate and could maintain a constant cell gap between the LC molecules without using any other epoxy or polymer. To enhance the electro-optical performance of the LC device, we applied an alignment method that creates pretilt angle on the PI surface via ion beam irradiation. Using this approach, our flexible LCDs have a contrast ratio of 132:1 and a response time of about 15 ms, resulting in highly reliable electro-optical performance in the bent state, comparable to that of glass-substrate LCDs.

  • We studied the nematic liquid crystal (NLC) aligning capabilities using the new alignment material of a SiC (Silicon Carbide) thin film. SiC thin film exhibits good chemical and thermal stability. The good thermal and chemical stability make SiC an attractive candidate for electronic applications. A homeotropic alignment of nematic liquid crystal by ion beam (IB) exposure on the SiC thin film surface was achieved. The about $87^{\circ}$ of stable pretilt angle was achieved at the range from $30^{\circ}$ to $45^{\circ}$ of incident angle. The good LC alignment is maintained by the ion beam alignment method on the SiC thin film surface until annealing temperature of $300^{\circ}C$. Consequently, homeotropic alignment effect of liquid crystal and the good thermal stability by the ion beam alignment method on the SiC thin film layer can be achieved.

  • We have studied the nematic liquid crystal (NLC) alignment effects on a nitrogen-doped diamond-like carbon (NDLC) thin film layer with ion beam irradiation. The pretilt angle for NLC on the NDLC surface with ion beam exposure was observed below 1 degree. Also, we had the good LC alignment characteristics on the NDLC thin films with ion beam exposure of 1800 eV. In thermal stability experiments, the alignment defect of the NLC on the NDLC surface with ion beam irradiation above annealing temperature of $250^{\circ}C$ can be observed. Therefore, the good thermal stability and LC alignment for NLC by ion beam aligned NDLC thin films can be achieved.
