  • This study was performed to introduce recently developed polyvinylamine as a wet-end process and paper strength improving aids. As a retention and drainage aids, high cationic charged polyvinylamine was more effective at the BCTMP and ONP stock condition than LBKP stock condition. As a dry tensile strength aid, dual system of polyvinylamine with anionic polyacrylamide was the best at the LBKP or ONP stock conditions. On the other hand, polyvinyl amine alone was better than dual system of polyvinylamine with anionic polyacrylamide at the BCTMP condition. As a wet tensile strength aid, polyvinylamine single system and dual system of polyvinylamine with anionic polyacrylamide were good at LBKP, BCTMP and ONP stock conditions. However, poly(aminoamide)-epichlorohydrin resin was good at LBKP and ONP stock conditions but efficiency of poly(aminoamide)-epichlorohydrin resin was remarkably decreased at BCTMP stock condition.

  • In this study, as a fuel filter for automobiles, base paper which can filtrate the polluted particles must satisfy with the standards of each vehicle. and a filter of impregnation paper made that combining the base paper with the resin. Therefore, They were wanted to found out the factors that affect base paper and impregnation paper according to content of HPZ, Mulberry pulp(MP), Laub holze bleached kraft pulp(LBKP). The most important things we wanted to find out in base paper and impregnation paper test were weight, thickness, air permeability, burst and tensile strength, maximum pore size and mean pore size, stiffness. we wanted to measure a rate of change of these condition by adjusting a rate of mixing for HPZ, MP and LBKP. Moreover, It suited for an impregnation paper mixed with a rate of mulberry pulp 20%, HPZ 40% and LBKP 40%. Used resins in this study was Phenol, Acryl, PVAc. And as every resins, sample was divided into existence and nothing of embossing. as a fuel filter for automobiles, It was appeared that the suitable condition of base paper was a rate of mixing for HPZ(40%), MP(20%) and LBKP(40%).

  • Electroconductive papers were manufactured as handsheet by mixing carbon fiber in LBKP and BCTMP. The electrical conductivity of the paper was improved by increasing carbon fiber content and basis weight. The porosity was increased and tensile strength was decreased by the addition of carbon fiber. Electrical conductivity of carbon fiber and BCTMP-based sheet was much better than those of carbon fiber and LBKP-based one. This result indicated that the electrical conductivity of paper can be affected by the kinds of raw material of wood fibers used.

  • To investigate the effects of swelling treatment by ammonia on characteristics of carboxymethy1cellulose(CMC) and CMC solution, the domestic kraft pulp pretreated with 5%, 10%, 15% and 20% $NH_4OH$ solution, was carboxymethylated by the standard method, and then the CMC prepared was tested. The physical properties of CMC and CMC solution, such as degree of substitution, transparency. viscosity, weight increase and solubility, were measured, and the comparison with commercial domestic CMC used as a food additive was done. The results obtained were as follows; 1. In CMC manufactured by standard solvent method, hardwood bleached kraft pulp(LBKP) was more substituted than safwood bleached kraft pulp(NBKP), and viscosity of NBKP was higher than that of LBKP. 2. When ammonia swelling treatment was done, degree of substitution gradually decreased with increasing concentration of $NH_4OH$, and degree of substitution of LBKP decreased with a larger range than that of NBKP. 3. When ammonia swelling treatment was done. transparency of CMC solution from LBKP was hardly effected, but in case of NBKP gradually increased with increasing concentration of $NH_4OH$. 4. When ammonia swelling treatment was done, viscosity of CMC solution was higher than that of CMC solution without ammonia swelling treatment. Especially, CMC of high viscosity could be manufactured in 5%, 10% concentration levels of $NH_4OH$. 5. In CMC manufactured from domestic NBKP, CMC at the range of 0.40 to 0.50 in DS was dispersed easily and quickly dissolved, and CMC at more than 0.50 in DS was dispersed slowly in water solution. 6. In comparison with commercial domestic CMC used as a food additive, CMC manufactured from domestic NBKP was higher in DS, and was lower in viscosity and transparency.

  • The purpose of this study was to confirm paper strengthening properties with recently commercialized polyvinylamine. Because of its high cationic charge density, polyvinylamine has been investigated as a size retention and surface coating aids. In this study, we tried to confirm polyvinylamine as wet-end additives to improve dry and wet strength using LBKP and BCTMP pulps. As a result, we found improvement of dry and wet tensile properties of polyvinylamine with BCTMP were much better than LBKP condition. This phenomena could be explained that ionic bonding of cationic charge of polyvinylamine with abundant anionic substances of BCTMP was a very important factor to improve dry and wet strength of paper.

  • Effect of fiber treatment with cellulase (Liftase A40), and with two refining methods (Valley beating and impact refining) on wood fiber and handsheet properties were investigated at three refining levels (300, 400, and 500ml) for two furnishes (NBKP and LBKP). Part of the treated furnishes were classified by 150 mesh screen into fine-free fiber, and fines. Fiber length analysis, WRV, zero-span strength, and other handsheet mechanical properties were compared. The study showed that Liftase A40 lowered the zero-span and the folding endurance of both furnishes (NBKP much more and LBKP much less). Pretreatment with Liftase A 40 followed by refining significantly lowered the fiber length and refining energy to reach to the target freeness. Impact refining, which is done by hitting the fibers vertically with rod at 20% solid content, kept the fiber length increased WRV, and improved handsheet mechanical properties much more than valley beating. Properties of fines from different sources were compared in detail in the study.

  • Oriental painting paper (Hwaseonji) was prepared from various kinds of plant fibers and its physical properties were investigated. The fibers used were classified into three different length of fibers; long fiber (<1.8 mm), medium fiber (1.4-1.8 mm) and short fiber (>1.4 mm). The fibers were mixed in the ratio of 15% long fiber, 25% medium fiber and 60% short fiber. The Hwaseonji prepared from mixing of the bamboo or rice straw pulp as a short fiber with the long and medium fibers showed excellent physical properties with a high smoothness and uniformity of Chinese ink blot. Mixing with LBKP as a short fiber was resulted in low physical properties, smoothness and wide ink blot. The properties of Hwaseonji, such as ink absorption, roughness and smoothness, may be predicted from the correlation of density with Chinese ink blot and smoothness.

  • Several enzyme were applied to Laubholz Bleached Kraft Pulp(LBKP) to evaluate the influence on beatability which was measured in Schopper Riegler value, and the results were compared with untreated pulp. Among the types of enzyme, cellulase was found to be the most effective. Addition of cellulase increased the beatability by 28% at optimum condition. Strength properties such as tensile strength and folding endurance also increased with enzymatic treatment by 12% and 46%, respectively. However, excessive dosage of cellulase had an adverse effect on strength properties in spite of the high beatability. Fibrillization by cellulase and destruction of fiber by excessive reaction was observed by Scanning Electron Microscopy(SEM).

  • To conserve wood resources for papermaking, chemical compositions of the hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) bast fiber cultivated in Korea such as holocellulose, ${\alpha}$-cellulose, lignin, alcohol-benzene extractives, hot and cold water extractives, and ash contents were investigated to manufacture the specialty packaging paper effectively. Significantly very low klason lignin content of 3.3% was accomplished by removing of the outer shell of bark. Laboratory soda pulping method which is very useful for the nonwood fiber was adapted, and it was found that there was no significant difference in both kappa number and H-factor between 25% and 30% NaOH charge. Hemp pulp cooked with the laboratory digester in 25% NaOH at $170^{\circ}C$ were mixed together with the wood pulp(NBKP:LBKP=1:1) in order to find the optimum mixture ratio which exhibited acceptable paper strength properties such as tensile index, burst index, and tear strength. When 10% of hemp soda pulps was mixed with 90% of wood pulps comprised of SwBKP and HwBKP (1:1), all physical strength increased significantly. The physical strength decreased as the amount of hemp pulp increased because the cell wall of bast fiber is very thick which causes low conformability and low fiber-fiber bonding. These results showed that paper made of hemp-wood pulp can be used for the specialty packaging paper which requires both the characteristic surface properties and the high physical strength of hemp fiber.
