Laser remelting of surface of cobalt-based hardfacing alloy can eliminate impurities and cracks and improve the wear resistance. In this present study, Stellite ${\sharp}6\;and\;{\sharp}21$ harfacing alloys were remelted by a 3kW CO2 laser. Hardness distribution and microstructures in the laser remelted zone was investigated. Our results showed that in proper laser parameters laser remelted surface of hardfacing alloy had more refined microstructure and more increased micro-hardness than the base material.
This work was carried out to investigate the welding behavior of thin A3003 Al alloy sheets by Nd : YAG laser beam. Considering bead shape and mechanical properties, the laser pulse shapes selected were two kinds of 2-division and 3-division by varying power level and pulse duration. In order to obtain optimum conditions, the factorial design method and central composite design method were applied. Tensile test, optical microscopy, micro hardness test and TEM analysis were performed. Due to the annealing caused by thermal effect during laser welding, precipitates were coarsended. The HAZ was softened and failed during tensile test. The hardness of HAZ was lower than that of base metal, since the heat input relieved the work hardening effect and caused grain growth.
In this paper we proposed a method of automatic point segmentation acquired by 2D laser scanner to recognize moving objects. Recently, Laser scanner is noticed as a new method in the field of close range 3D modeling. But the majority of the researches are pointed on precise 3D modeling of static objects using expensive 3D laser scanner. 2D laser scanner is relatively cheap and can obtain 2D coordinate information of moving object's surface or can be utilized as 3D laser scanner by rotating the system body. In these reasons, some researches are in progress, which are adopting 2D laser scanner to robot control systems or detection of objects moving along linear trajectory. In our study, we automatically segmented point data of 2D laser scanner thus we could recognize each of the object passing through a section.
Laser welding of thermoplastics is a new jointing technique with a host of advantages. It is not only another extremely useful welding method but also a cost-effective alternative to traditional techniques involving screws or adhesives. Transmission laser-welding of thermoplastics such as polycarbonate(PC), polypropylene(PP), polyvinyl chloride(PVC), low density polyethylene(LDPE) and acrylic using a high power diode laser has been studied experimentally. The optical transmission of each plastic has been measured at laser wavelength of 808nm. The weld process has been characterized by the specific energy and weld time required for each plastic. The characteristics of laser welding between same plastics have also been analyzed.
Laser welding application for car body manufacturing has many advantages in the stiffness and the lightness of vehicle, the productivity of assembly line, and the degree of freedom in design. This presentation will express the innovation of car body manufacturing including parameter optimization, process modeling, and system integration. In this application the investment for systems was cut down dramatically by real time switching over the laser path between two welding stations. Points of technical discussion are as follows; optimization of parameters such as laser power, robot speed and trajectory, compact and useful design of jig & fixture to assure welding quality for 3 sheet-layer zinc-coated steel, system integration between 4㎾ Nd:YAG laser device and the other systems, on-line real time welding quality monitoring system, perfect safety standards for high power laser, minimization of consumption costs such as arc lamp, protective glass for optic, etc. This application was successfully launched mass production line in 2001. The laser-welded line of side panel consists of 122 stitches totally. And the length is about 2.4m.
When cutting 2.0cm-thick red oak and hard maple with an air-jet-assisted carbon-dioxide laser of 2kW output power, maximum feed speed at the point of full penetration of the beam decreased with increasing the angle between grain and cutting direction. Feed speed averaged 3.75 and 3.38 meters per minute for red oak and hard maple, respectively. Gray-level of laser-cut surfaces were analyzed by image analysis system. The highest gray level of laser-cut surface was obtained when red oak was cut parallel to grain by laser. Surface profiler was used to scan the sawn and laser-cut surfaces. Center line average roughnesses of laser-cut surfaces were higher than those of sawn surfaces. Scanning electron micrographs showed the cell walls which were melted by laser.
Low level laser therapy has various therapy effects. This paper performed the basic study for fabricating the low level laser therapy apparatus, and one of the goals of this paper was to make this apparatus used handily. The apparatus has been fabricated using the laser diode and microprocessor unit. The apparatus used a 635 nm laser diode for laser medical therapy and was designed for a pulse width modulation type to increase stimulation effects. In this study, the designed device was used to find out how 635 nm laser diode affected the skin injury of SD-Rat(Sprague-Dawley Rat). We divided the participants into two groups; irradiation group which was irradiated 10 minutes a day for 9 consecutive days, and none irradiation group. The results showed that the study group had lower incidence of inflammation and faster recovery, compared with the control group.
A method is proposed for the improvement of deposition reproducibility in the selective electrodeposition process using laser masking and DC voltage. Selective electrodeposition using laser masking and DC voltage can achieve a deposited layer with micro patterns. However, selective electrodeposition using laser masking and DC voltage have a critical problem: the lack of reproducibility in selective deposition. The reproducibility of selective electrodeposition can be improved by a new process that consists of laser masking, two-step electro-deposition, laser scribing, and ultrasonic cleaning. The experiments in this study show that the reproducibility of selective deposition can be successfully improved by the combination of two-step electrodeposition and laser scribing.

World demand for natural gas has generated the need for many new land transmission pipelines to be installed in the next decade or so. Although mechanized gas metal arc welding is well developed, there are opportunities for cost savings by using alternative welding processes. Hybrid Nd:YAG laser - gas metal arc welding enables fibre optic delivery of the laser energy to a robotic welding head to be combined with the addition of extra energy and a consumable to produce good quality, deep penetration welds in a single pass. The present paper describes initial procedure development to optimize the laser and gas metal arc welding parameters for making joints in pipeline steel. Satisfactory joint quality was obtained and it is intended to develop the process to prototype field trials.
Experimental studies of laser micromachining on Mo diaphragm using piezo Q-switched Nd:YAZ laser have been performed. Application of miniaturized micorcolumn electron gun arrays as a potential electron beam lithography or portable mini-scanning electron microscope (SEM) application have recently extensively examined. The conventional microcolumn fabrication technique would give a limitation on the minimization of aberration, In this paper, we obtained 20~30 $\mu \textrm m$aperture of laser micromachining on Mo diaphragm using piezo Q-swithed Nd:YAG laser. The geometrical figures, such as the diameter and the preciseness of the drilled aperture are dependent upon the total energy of the laser pulse train, laser pulse width, and the diameter of laser spot in addition to the materials-dependent parameters.
