In areas around Deoksan Li and Deokjeon Li, Inje Eup, Inje Gun, located between $38^{\circ}2^{\prime}55^{{\prime}{\prime}}N$ and $38^{\circ}5^{\prime}50^{{\prime}{\prime}}N$ in latitude and $128^{\circ}11^{\prime}20^{{\prime}{\prime}}E$ and $128^{\circ}18^{\prime}20^{{\prime}{\prime}}E$ in longitude, large-sized avalanche disasters occurred due to Typhoon Ewiniar in 2006. As a result, 29 people were dead or missing, along with a total of 37.25 billion won of financial loss(Gangwon Province, 2006). To evaluate such landslide and debris flow risk areas and their vulnerability, this study applied a technique called 'Weight of Evidence' based on GIS. Especially based on the overlay analysis of aerial images before the occurrence of landslides and debris flows in 2005 and after 2006, this study extracted 475 damage-occurrence areas in a shape of point, and established a DB by using such factors as topography, hydrologic, soil and forest physiognomy through GIS. For the prediction diagram of debris flow and landslide risk areas, this study calculated W+ and W-, the weighted values of each factor of Weight Evidence, while overlaying the weighted values of factors. Besides, the diagram showed about 76% in prediction accuracy, and it was also found to have a relatively high correlationship with the areas where such natural disasters actually occurred.

Rainfall-induced landslide disaster case histories are typically required to establish critical lines based on the decrease coefficient for judging the likelihood of slope collapse or failure; however, reliably setting critical lines is difficult because the number of nationwide disaster case histories is insufficient and not well distributed across the region. In this study, we propose a method for setting the critical area to judge the risk of slope collapse without disaster case history information. Past 10 years rainfall data based on decrease coefficient are plotted as points, and a reference line is established by connecting the outermost points. When realtime working rainfall cross the reference line, warning system is operating and this system can be utilized nationwide through setting of reference line for each AWS (Automatic Weather Station). Warnings were effectively predicted at 10 of the sites, and warnings could have been issued 30 min prior to the landslide movement at eight of the sites. These results indicate a reliability of about 67%. To more fully utilize this model, it is necessary to establish nationwide rainfall databases and conduct further studies to develop regional critical areas for landslide disaster prevention.
Mountainous disasters such as landslides and debris flow are difficult to forecast. Debris flow in particular often flows along the valley until it reaches the road or residential area, causing casualties and huge damages. In this study, the researchers selected Seoraksan National Park area located at Inje County (Inje-gun), Gangwon Province-where many mountainous disasters occur due to localized torrential downpours-for the damage reduction and cause analysis of the area experiencing frequent mountainous disasters every year. Then, the researchers conducted the field study and constructed geospatial information data by GIS method to analyze the characteristics of the disaster-occurring area. Also, to extract more precise geographic parameters, the researchers scanned debris flow triggering area through terrestrial LiDAR and constructed 3D geographical data. LiDAR geographical data was then compared with the existing numerical map to evaluate its precision and made the comparative analysis with the geographic data before and after the disaster occurrence. In the future, it will be utilized as basic data for risk analysis of mountainous disaster or disaster reduction measures through a fine-grid topographical map.

As a result of climate change, mountain sediment disasters due to localized heavy rain and mountain development are occuring more frequently, thus, increasing social attention to and demand for soil erosion control projects. However, since 2011 Seoul Wumyeon Mountain landslide, the public is expressing increasing anxiety as well as negative perception regarding defective project results. Therefore, this study investigated promotional terms and information media related to soil erosion control projects according to the consumer in order to increase awareness of soil erosion control projects. In this study, the information consumers were divided into experts and the general public and conducted a survey related to promotional terms and media for communicating relevant information. In the result, the experts chose landslide prevention and recovery projects (41.8%) as an appropriate promotional term for soil erosion control projects. The general public, however, chose mountain sediment disaster prevention projects (32.5%) as the appropriate promotional term. However, the analysis showed that it would be necessary to develop an promotional term that can encompass the concept of 'disaster prevention' including forest and soil disaster as the word 'landslide' can suggest soil erosion control is limited to landslides only. In the survey regarding the media for communicating information related to soil erosion control projects according to the consumer type, the experts preferred radio and TV as media to communicate the relevant information, while, among the general public, the youths preferred social media such as Facebook and Twitter (22.22%) and adults radio and TV (34.07%), As for the most effective way to promote soil erosion control projects, the experts chose traditional promotinal media such as newspaper, radio, and TV (0.172) whereas the adults and youths preferred the internet and Facebook (0.089). It appears that using the preferred media for communicating information related to soil erosion control projects according to the consumer type will be effective way to promote soil erosion control projects.

This paper addresses the effects of extreme rainfall on the stability of cut slopes in Yen Bai city, Northern Viet Nam. In this area, natural slopes are excavated to create places for infrastructures and buildings. Cut slopes are usually made without proper site investigations; the design is mostly based on experience. In recent years, many slope failures have occurred along these cuts especially in rainy seasons, resulting in properties damaged and loss of lives. To explain the reason that slope failure often happens during rainy seasons, this research analyzed the influence of extreme rainfalls, initial ground conditions, and soil permeability on the changes of pore water pressure within the typical slope, thereafter determining the impact of these changes on the slope stability factor of safety. The extreme rainfalls were selected based on all of the rainfalls triggering landslide events that have occurred over the period from 1960 to 2009. The factor of safety (FS) was calculated using Bishop's simplified method. The results show that when the maximum infiltration capacity of the slope top soil is less than the rainfall intensity, slope failures may occur 14 hours after the rain starts. And when this happens, the rainfall duration is the deciding factor that affects the slope FS values. In short, cut slopes in Yen Bai may be stable in normal conditions after the excavation, but under the influence of tropical rain storms, their stability is always questionable.

The objective of this thesis is to develop a prediction system of potential landslide sites to apply to the prevention of landslide disaster which occurred during the heavy rainfall in the rainy season. The system was developed by combining a modified slope stability analysis model and a hydrological model. The modified slope stability analysis model, which was improved from 1-D infinite slope stability analysis model, has been taken into consideration of the flexion of the hill slopes. To evaluate its applicability to the prediction of landslides, the data of actual landslides were plotted on the predicted areas on the GIS map. The matching rate of this model to the actual data was 92.4%. And the relations between wetness index and landform factors and potential landslide were analyzed.

Despite the potentially major influence of rainstorm patterns on the prediction of shallow landslides, this relationship has not yet received significant attention. In this study, five typical temporal rainstorm patterns with the same cumulative amount and intensity components comprising Advanced (A1 and A2), Centralized (C), and Delayed (D1 and D2) were designed based on a historical rainstorm event occurred in 2006 in Mt. Jinbu area. The patterns were incorporated as the hydrological conditions into the Transient Rainfall Infiltration and Grid-based Regional Slope-stability Model (TRIGRS), in order to assess their influences on pore pressure variation and changes in the stability of the covering soil layer in the study area. The results revealed that not only the cumulative rainfall thresholds necessary to initiate landslides, but also the rate at which the factor of safety (FS) decreases and the time required to reach the critical state, are governed by rainstorm pattern. The sooner the peak rainfall intensity occurs, the smaller the cumulative rainfall threshold, and the shorter the time until landslide occurrence. Left-skewed rainfall patterns were found to have a greater effect on landslide initiation. More specifically, among the five different patterns, the Advanced storm pattern (A1) produced the most critical state, as it resulted in the highest pore pressure across the entire area for the shortest duration; the severity of response was then followed by patterns A2, C, D1, and D2. Thus, it can be concluded that rainfall patterns have a significant effect on the cumulative rainfall threshold, the build-up of pore pressure, and the occurrence of shallow landslides, both in space and time.

Landslide has been a major disaster in Indonesia, and recent climate change and indiscriminate urban development around the mountains have increased landslide risks. Java Island, Indonesia, where more than half of Indonesia's population lives, is experiencing a great deal of damage due to frequent landslides. However, even in such a dangerous situation, the number of inhabitants residing in the landslide-prone area increases year by year, and it is necessary to develop a technique for analyzing landslide-hazardous and vulnerable areas. In this regard, this study aims to evaluate landslide susceptibility of Java, an island of Indonesia, by using GIS-based spatial prediction models. We constructed the geospatial database such as landslide locations, topography, hydrology, soil type, and land cover over the study area and created spatial prediction models by applying Weight of Evidence (WoE), decision trees algorithm and artificial neural network. The three models showed prediction accuracy of 66.95%, 67.04%, and 69.67%, respectively. The results of the study are expected to be useful for prevention of landslide damage for the future and landslide disaster management policies in Indonesia.
Landslides triggered by the combination of heavy precipitation and anthropological disturbance in hilly areas cause severe damage to human lives, properties, and infrastructure constructions. A comprehensive investigation of the influencing factors and failure mechanisms of landslides are significant for disaster mitigation and prevention. This paper utilized the combination of detailed geological investigation, physical experimental testing as well as numerical modelling to determine the failure mechanism, and proposed a countermeasures of the Lantian landslide occurred on 2, July 2017. The results reveal that the Lantian landslide is a catastrophic reactivated slide which occurred in an active tectonic region in Southwest China. Because of the unique geological settings, the fully to highly weathered basalts in the study area with well-developed fractures favored the rainwater infiltration, which is the beneficial to slide reactivation. Engineering excavation and heavy precipitation are the main triggering factors to activate the slide motion. Two failure stages have been identified in the landslide. The first phase involves a shallow mass collapse originated at the upper slopes, which extends from the road to platform at rear part, which is triggered by excavation in the landslide region. Subjected to the following prolonged rainfall from 19 June to 2 July, 2017, the pore water pressure of the slope continually increased, and the groundwater table successively rise, resulting in a significant decrease of soil strength which leads to successive large-scale deep slide. Thereinto, the shallow collapse played a significant role in the formation of the deep slide. Based on the formation mechanisms of the landslide, detailed engineering mitigation measures, involving slope cutting, anchor cable frame, shotcrete and anchorage, retaining wall and intercepting ditch were suggested to reduce the future failure risk of the landslide.
Landslide disasters including debris flows are the one of the most frequent natural disasters in Korea, and losses of lives and property damages due to these catastrophic events have been increased every year. Various mitigation programs and related policies have been conducted in order to respond and prepare landslide disasters. Most landslide reduction programs are, however, focused on recovery actions after the disasters and lead to unrealistic consequences to the affected people and their properties. The main objective of this study, therefore, is to evaluate the landslide hazard based on the identification of geomorphological features, which is for the preparedness of the landslide disasters. Two methodologies, SINMAP and vector dispersion analyses are used to simulate those characteristics where landslides are actually located. Results showed that both methods well discriminate geomorphic features between stable and unstable domains. This proves that geomorphological characteristics well describe a relationship with the existing landslide hazard. SINMAP analysis which is based on the consecutive model considering external factors like infiltration is well identify the landslide hazard especially for debris flow type landslides rather than vector dispersion focusing on a specific area. Combining with other methods focusing specific characteristics of geomorphological feature, accurate landslide hazard assessments are implemented.
