  • Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is contagious with transmissiobn vertically or horizontally by blood products and body secretions. Over 50% of Iranian carriers contracted the infection prenatally, making this the most likely route of transmission of HBV in Iran. To evaluate the resistance to adefovir (ADV) therapy in patients with chronic hepatitis B infection, a study was conducted on 70 patients (63 males and 7 females), who had received in first line lamivudine and second line adefovir. All were tested for the presence of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), hepatitis B envelope antigen (HBeAg), serum alanine amino transferase (ALT) level and HBV DNA load before and after treatment with ADV. In all samples, resistance to lamivudine and ADV was tested with real time PCR. Among seventy patients with chronic hepatitis B infection, 18 (25.7%) were resistant to LAM and 8 (11.4%) were resistant to ADV. Only one patient was negative for the presence of HBS-Ag (5.6%) and two were negative for HBe-Ag (11.1%). In this study we used a new method (ALLGIO probe assay) that has high sensitivity in detection of adefovir resistance mutants, which we recommend to other researchers. Mutant strains of the YMDD motif of HBV polymerase can be found in some patients under treatment with lamivudine and ADV. ADV has been demonstrated to be efficient in patients with lamivudine resistant HBV.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the dry matter yield and quality of mixture swards associated with Festulolium braunii(Festuca pratensis Huds. ${\times}$ Lolium multiflorum Lam.). The experiment was arranged in a randomized block design with four mixture types: A(control); orchardgrass(seeding rate 60%) + tall fescue 20% + Kentucky bluegrass 10% + white clover 10%, B; orchardgrass 60% + tall fescue 20% + Festulolium braunii 10% + white clover 10%, C; orchardgrass 60% + Festulolium braunii 20% + Kentucky bluegrass 10% + white clover 10%, and D; orchardgrass 30% + Festulolium braunii 30% + red clover 40%. This study was carried out from Sept. 1996 to Dec. 1998 at Chungnam National University. The DM yield of D mixture type was higher than that of other mixture types(P<0.05). Compared with A(control) mixture type, the DM yield of the B mixture type which substitutes Kentucky bluegrass with Festulolium braunii was higher, but the C mixture type which substitutes tall fescue with Festulolium braunii was lower than that of A(control) mixture type. The content of CP, NDF, ADF, hemi-cellulose and cellulose among mixture types shows no significant differdence. Howerever, the DMD was not significantly different among mixture types in 1997, but the DMD of C and D mixture type were significantly higher than those of other mixture types in 1998(P<0.05). On the otherhand, the yield of CP and DDM in D mixture types was higher than those of the other mixture types(P<0.05). In botanical composition, the Festulolium braunii percentage of B, C and D mixture type with mixed Festulolium braunii wasd highly maintained, especially D mixture type was ranging from 40% to 60% in experimental periods. Following the above result, It is the most favorable mixture method for Festulolium braunii to make use of top grass like orchardgrass + red clover. It is also recommened to substitute bottom grass like Kentucky bluegrass with Festulolium braunii rather than with tall fescue in A(control) mixture type.

  • The perpendicular magnetic anisotropy of sputtered CoFeB thin films covered by MgO was investigated by vibrating sample magnetometry. Three different $Co_xFe_{80-x}B_{20}$ alloys were studied. Under out-of plane magnetic field, the saturation field was found to increase with increasing the Co content. The magnetization and interface anisotropy energy were obtained for all samples. Both showed a marked dependence on the MgO overlayer thickness. In addition, their variations were found to be non-monotonous as a function of the Co concentration.

  • This paper presents a dual-mode amplifier which operates as amplifier or frequency multiplier according to the input frequency. It satisfies the 802.11a/b/g frequency band of wireless LAN standard. A conventional dual-band wireless LAN transmitter consists of the separating power amplifiers operating at each frequency band, but the proposed dual-mode amplifier operates as an amplifier for the 802.11b/g signal and as a frequency multiplier for the 802.11a signal according to each LAN bias condition. The amplifier mode shows the gain of 13dB, the PldB of 17dBm and second harmonic suppression of below -37dBc. And the frequency-doubler mode shows the gain of 3.3dB, the output power of 7.3dBm and third harmonic suppression of below -50dBr.

  • Three active compounds were isolated from the culture of a plant pathogenic fungus, Bipolaris cynodontis. The structure elucidation of these compounds was accomplished by 2D NMR techniques, such as $^1H-^1H$ and $^{13}C-^1H$ COSY, COLOC, HMBC and rotating frame NOE(ROESY). Compounds were found as derivatives of cochlioquinone and cochlioquinol that were previously isolated as phytotoxins from B. bicolor and B. cynodontis, respectively. The compounds showed phytotxicity against Italian ryegrass, one of the host plants of B. cynodontis.

  • In this paper, 2-stage power amplifier has been designed for 5.8GHz wireless LAN application. The power amplifier PldB output power has 21.6dBm at 5.8GHz frequency. Also the power amplifier shows 17.6dB gain and -17.8dB input return loss at 5.725GHz to 5.825GHz. The OFDM modulation and transmission block have been modeled in order to analyse the relationship between the power amplifier distortion and output ACPR for the IEEE 802.11a wireless LAN. The nonlinear characteristic of the power amplifier has been modeled as AM-to-AM and AM-to-PM using the behavioral model, and the output spectrum is analysed with the phase distortion variation. Also, amplifier back-off value from PldB to satisfy the required IEEE 802.11a standard spectrum mask has been simulated with phase distortion, and the simulation data have been compared to the measurement result collected by using the pre-distortion technique.

  • Three extracellular protease-deficient Bacillus subtilis strains were transformed with the plasmid pCK98 containing the endo-$\beta$-1,4-glucanase (Eng) gene of B. subtilis BSE616. The three transformants, B. subtilis DB104 (pCK98), WB600 (pCK98) and WB700 (pCK98), produced the same high level of enzyme activity and showed similar patterns of cell growth and enzyme production. When B. subtilis DB 104 (pCK98), a two-extracellular protease deficient strain, was cultured for 22 h, almost all the secreted enzyme was found to be in the completely cleaved form by both activity staining and Western blotting studies. B. subtilis WB600 (pCK98), a six-extracellular protease-deficient strain, produced a partially cleaved form in addition to the intact form of the enzyme, although the degree of internal cleavage of the enzyme was greatly reduced. With B. subtilis WB700 (pCK98), a seven-extracellular protease-deficient strain, almost all the enzyme was produced as the intact uncleaved form. This study illustrates that a role of the V pr protease is to degrade foreign proteins produced in B. subtilis and WB700 is a suitable expression system for producing the intact form of the Eng and other foreign proteins that may lose at least part of their efficacy due to internal proteolytic cleavage.

  • Luffa acutanqula var. amara exhibits floral and extrafloral nectaries. The floral nectaries are restricted to the torus of the male flowers, while the extrafloral nectaries are observed on foliage leaves, probract, outer surface of calyx and pedicels. The floral nectaries develop from a group of epidermal and sub-epidermal initials which differentiate into secretory and subsecretory zones respectively during further divisions. The extrafloral nectary initiates from a single papillate nectary initial which gives rise to mature nectary comprising stalk layer, secretory and subsecretory tissues. Both the floral and extrafloral nectaries are vascularized. Interactions between insect-visitors and the plant with special reference to their functions are also discussed.

  • Seismic performance of coupling beams not designed for ductility is examined. Eight 1:4 scale coupling beam specimens, with seven reinforced concrete sections and one composite section, were tested under cycles of push-pull action. Characteristics of the specimens include moderate shear span ratio in the range of 2.5-3.5, high main reinforcement ratio at 3-4% and small to large stirrup spacing with 90- degree hooks. All the reinforced concrete specimens failed in a brittle manner. Displacement ductility of specimens with large stirrup spacing (${\geq}$140 mm) is in the range of 3 to 5. Seismic performance of the specimens is also examined using the ultimate drift angle and the amount of energy dissipated. Correlating the test data, an empirical relationship is proposed to estimate the ultimate drift angle of a class of coupling beams considered in the study not designed for ductility.
