  • In this study, we investigated the possibility of Kaempferia Galanga(KG) hot water extract on the antioxidant, cytotoxic and anti-inflammatory efficacy as a cosmetic ingredient. Antioxidant effects were evaluated based on DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activity, FRAP assay, and total polyphenol contents. The MTT assay was used to confirm the cell toxicity in mouse macrophage RAW264.7 cells. Anti-inflammatory effects were also investigated in LPS-induced RAW264.7 cells by measuring secretion of NO, $TNF-{\alpha}$ and iNOS, $TNF-{\alpha}$ mRNA expression level. As a result, DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activities were increased in a concentration-dependent manner. The ferric reducing antioxidant power(FRAP) was the highest at 5 mg/mL as 24.5 uM. The measurements of total polyphenol content was $1.28{\pm}0.064mg\;GAE/g$. The cytotoxicity of the KG extract results showed no cytotoxicity at concentration of 0.625 to 2.5 mg/mL. In addition, the extract of KG significantly suppressed the LPS-induced nitrite, $TNF-{\alpha}$ secretion and the mRNA expression of iNOS, $TNF-{\alpha}$ in RAW264.7 cells. Taken together, these data suggest that the KG hot water extracts can be used as a safe and functional cosmetic raw material.

  • The objective of this study was to evaluate the quality characteristics of Sulgidduk added with cabbage powder. The moisture contents of Sulgidduk added with cabbage powder ranged from 37.2 to 33.7% and were significantly lower than those of the control. As the amount of cabbage powder increased, the L-value was reduced, while the a- and b-values were increased. In terms of textural characteristics, Hardness, Adhesiveness, Springiness, Cohesiveness, Gumminess, and Chewiness decreased with greater concentrations of cabbage powder. Sensory evaluation revealed that the favorite degree of color, flavor and taste received high increasing scores with increasing addition amounts of cabbage powder, while the Chewiness did not differ significantly (p<0.05) among the samples. The moistness found to be highest in the control, while it decreased as the amount of cabbage powder increased. The overall acceptance was highest as (6.00) for the Sulgidduk (CS6) that contained 6% of the cabbage powder. Overall, the results of this study indicate that adding 6% cabbage powder to Sulgidduk was produced the optimal results, and provided good quality characteristics and high overall acceptance.

  • We investigated the effects of non-meat protein binders combined with glucono-${\delta}$-lactone (GdL) on the binding properties regarding restructured pork prepared by high-pressure treatment. Soy protein isolate (SPI), casein (CS), whey protein concentrate (WPC), and egg white (EW) were used as non-meat protein binders and compared with the control (no binder) and with the ${\kappa}$-carrageenan (KC) treatment. The compression and depression rates were 2.3 and 37 MPa/s, respectively, and pressurization was conducted at 200 MPa for 30 min at $4^{\circ}C$. After pressurization, the physical properties (pH, water-holding capacity, color, tensile strength, and microscopic structure) of the sample were evaluated. The combination of pressurization with acidification enabled cold-set meat binding, and the binding strength of restructured pork was enhanced by the addition of non-meat proteins. Among binders, SPI demonstrated the best efficiency in binding meat pieces. Therefore, the present study demonstrated that the combination of acidification and pressurization processes with the utilization of non-meat protein binders has a potential benefit in meat restructuring.

  • This study was performed to find out the quality characteristics of Noodles by addition of red ginseng powder(0, 2, 4, 6, 8%). The quality characteristics of the sample were estimated in terms of general com-position, color difference, cookery characteristics(water absorption, volume of cooked noodles, turbidity), texture profile analysis and sensory evaluation. The protein, lipid, ash, Na and water binding capacity did not show significant difference in any of the groups. In red ginseng powder added groups, moisture contents, a and b values significantly increased but L value considerably decreased(p<0.05). The weight, volume, water absorption of the cooked noodles and turbidity of 8% of red ginseng powder added group were significantly higher than the control group(p<0.05). In texture profile analysis, adhesiveness, gumminess, hardness and springiness significantly decreased(p<0.05) with more red ginseng powder added. Chewiness and cohesiveness significantly(p<0.05) increased with the 4, 6, 8% of red ginseng powder added. In sensory evaluation, surface color was very good in the 8% red ginseng powder added group while taste and flavor of red ginseng were very good except the 8% red ginseng powder added group(p<0.05). Appearance and overall quality were highest in the 4% red ginseng powder added group(p<0.05). Therefore, noodles containing 4% red ginseng powder were most preferable.

  • $K^+$ efflux through a certain type of $K^+$ channels causes the change of membrane potential and leads to cAMP synthesis in the transmembrane cell signaling for the initiation of sperm motility in the salmonid fishes. The addition of $Ca^{2+}$ conferred motility to the trout sperm that were immobilized by external $K^+$ and other alkaline metals, $Rb^+$ and $Cs^{2+}$, suggesting the participation of external $Ca^{2+}$ in the initiation of sperm motility. L-type $Ca^{2+}$ channel blockers such as nifedipine, nimodipine, and FS-2 inhibited the motility, but N-type $Ca^{2+}$ channel blocker, w-conotoxin MvIIA, did not. On the other hand, the membrane hyperpolarization and cAMP synthesis were suppressed by $Ca^{2+}$ channel blockers, nifedipine, and trifluoroperazine. Furthermore, these suppressions were relieved by the addition of $K^+$ ionophore, valinomycin. Inhibitors of calmodulin, such as W-7, trifluoperazine, and calrnidazol-C1, inhibited the sperm motility, membrane hyperpolarization, and cAMP synthesis. The results suggest that $Ca^{2+}$ influx through $Ca^{2+}$ channels that are sensitive to specific $Ca^{2+}$ channel blockers and calmodulin participate in the changes of membrane potential, leading to synthesis of cAMP in the cell signaling for the initiation of trout sperm motility.

  • A study has been done on the separation of iodide from spent pressurized water reactor (PWR) fuels and its quantitative determination using ion chromatography. Spent PWR fuels were dissolved with mixed acid of nitric and hydrochloric acids (80 : 20 molL%) which can oxidize iodide to iodate to prevent it from be vaporized. After reducing ${IO_3}^-$ to $I_2$ in 2.5 M $HNO_3$ with $NH_2OH{\cdot}HCl$, Iodine was selectively separated from actinides and all other fission products with carbontetrachloride and back-extracted with 0.1 M $NaHSO_3$. Recovered iodide was determined using the ion chromatograph of which the column was installed in a glove box for the analysis of radioactive materials. In practice, spent PWR fuel with 42,000~44,000 MWd/MtU was analyzed and its quantity was compared to that calculated by burnup code, ORIGEN2. The agreement was achieved with a deviation of -8.3~-0.5% from the ORIGEN 2 data, $324.5{\sim}343.6{\mu}g/g$.

  • The paper board sludge(PBS) itself and compost sludge manure(CSM) mixed with sawdust, fowl droppings and urea to the PBS were treated to soybean plants to find the effects of growing characters, yield components, and nutritional compounds in the plant tissues. 1. Percentages of missing plants were 5-9% and 3.6-4.1% in the treatments of PBS and CSM, respectively. After that, the plants were restored to normal conditions. Anyway it is not desirable to use the paper board sludge and immature compost sludge manure in seeding time or to young seedlings. 2. Growth of the plant height was retarded in early growing phase, but it was normal in later stages. And the width and length of the largest leaf, numbers of main stem nodes and pods were not significant among the treatments. 3. The yield intends to increase through the treatments of 1,200, 1,600, and 2,000Kg PBS per 10a. In the CSM treatments with high rate of sawdust, fowl droppings and urea, the numbers of pods and grains were higher than the treatment of high content of PBS. 100-grain and one liter weights were opposite intention. It was suggested that the excess nitrogen amounts from the compost sludge manure than conventional fertilization affected to the yield components. 4. The contents of the main chemical compounds such as N, $P_2O_5$, $K_2O$, Ca, Mg were determined. The concentrations of nitrogen were higher in the treatment of PBS and CSM than none and control. 5. In conclusion, the nutritional effects of PBS were in evidence. To use the sludges, it should be fermented with adequate additives to improve the aeration, C/N ratio, activity of microbial, and other conditions. The sludges could be used to crops as a fertilizers effectively.

  • This study attempted to investigate the applicability of Geranium maculatum extract as a cosmeceutical ingredient. For this, DPPH, ABTS and FRAP assays were performed to assess radical scavenging activities. To evaluate antioxidant substances, in addition, polyphenol and flavonoid concentrations were measured. Furthermore, cytotoxicity, whitening and anti-inflammatory tests were conducted, using B16F10 and RAW 264.7 cells, and the results found the followings: In the DPPH and ABTS assays, 265.8 mg ascorbic acid/g and 168.5 mg ascorbic acid/g of antioxidant capacities were found respectively. According to the FRAP assay, 1 mg Geranium maculatum extract was same with ascorbic acid 229±9 ㎍ in terms of reducing power. In polyphenol and flavonoid concentrations, 32.989±1.610 mg/g and 11.098±0.261 mg/g were observed each. The above results show that cells survived in the test concentrations more than 80 percent, confirming the low toxicity of Geranium maculatum extract. According to whitening testing, melanin synthesis was reduced depending on concentration, and at the same time, 40.62±2.07% of melanin production inhibition was found at 100 ㎍/mL. In anti-inflammatory testing, inflammation was reduced depending on concentration, and 27.86±2.82% of inhibition of inflammation was detected simultaneously, confirming the applicability of Geranium maculatum extract as a cosmeceutical ingredient.

  • From July 1979 through March 1985,112 patients with carcinoma of the uterine cervix were treated by whole pelvis irradiation and intracavitary radiation with Cs-137. The treatment consisted of 3600rad-5200rad to the whole pelvis by parallel opposing portals, 5 days per week, 180-200rad per day. Parametrial boost with 400-800rad was given in 60 patients. 2 intracavitary Cs-137 radiation using TAO applicator were done with 7-10 days interval. Total treatment times were 40-65 days with average 52 days. Total dose of radiation to point A varied from 6820 to 10500rad with average 8388rad and to point B from 4850 to 6899ra0 with average 5898rad. All patients had follow up from 6 months to 75 months and median follow up of 31 months. $9(8\%)$ had stage $14(12.5\%)$ had stage IIa, $50(44.6\%)$ had stage IIb, $33(29.5\%)$ had stage III, $6(5.4\%)$ had stage IV. 110 patients had squamous cell carcinoma and 2 patients had adenocarcinoma. 5 year actuarial survival rates were $61.8\%$ for the entire group, $84.6\%$ for stage Ib,$77.8\%$ for stage IIa, $56.7\%$ for stage IIb, $60\%$ for stage III, $33.3\%$ for stage IV. RT dose to medial parametrium (point A) below 8000rad resulted in $7/18(38.9\%)$ failure (=death) in contrast to 25/94 $(26.5\%)$ failure with dose over 8000rad. RT dose to lateral parametrium (point B) below 6000ra0 yielded 20/63 $(34.9\%)$ failure compared to $10/49(20.4\%)$ failure with dose over 6000rad. Poor survival group of age were between 40-49 years with failure of $14/41(34.1\%)$. There was no increased failure rate below age of 40 with failure of $2111(13.9\%)$. The results suggest that survival is as good as other published data, and that higher doses over 8000rad to point A and 6000rad to point B should be delivered.
