Oxygen consumption rate of Far eastern catfish, Silurus asotus, weighing 280g, was measured using continuous flow respirometry chamber linked computer monitoring system. Mean oxygen consumption rates at $15^{\circ}C,\;20^{\circ}C,\;25^{\circ}C$, and $30^{\circ}C$ were ranged in 35.2$\~96.4mg\;O_2/kg$ fish/hr, 78.6$\~127.9mg\;O_2/kg$ fish/hr, 120.1$\~231.7mg\;O_2/kg$ fish/hr, and 197.5$\~352.3mg\;O_2/kg$ fish/hr, respectively. The oxygen consumption rates increased with increasing water temperature (p<0.05). A photoperiod-mediated oxygen consumption rates was higher during the light period than during the darkness (P<0.05). When acclimated with different photoperiods, 24L:0D, 12L:12D, and 0L:24D, the lowest oxygen consumption rate was observed in the continuous darkness (0L:24D). The differences between maximum and minimum oxygen consumption rates oyer 24 hour increased with increasing water temperature and the difference was the highest in 12L:12D. Oxygen consumption rate changed suddenly at dawn and at dusk.
Leishmania tropica and L. major are etiologic agents of human cutaneous leishmaniasis. Delayed type hypersensitivity (DTH) is an immunologic response that has been frequently used as a correlate for protection against or sensitization to leishmania antigen. In BALB/c mice, L. tropica infection results in non-ulcerating disease, whereas L. major infection results in destructive lesions. In order to clarify the immunologic mechanisms of these 2 different outcomes, we compared the ability of these 2 leishmania species in induction of DTH response in this murine model. BALB/c mice were infected with L. major or L. tropica, and disease evolution and DTH responses were determined. The results show that the primary L. major infection can exacerbate the secondary L. major infection and is associated with DTH response. Higher doses of the primary L. major infection result in more disease exacerbation of the secondary L. major infection as well as higher DTH response. L. tropica infection induces lower DTH responses than L. major. We have previously reported that the primary L. tropica infection induces partial protection against the secondary L. major infection in BALB/c mice. Induction of lower DTH response by L. tropica suggests that the protection induced against L. major by prior L. tropica infection may be due to suppression of DTH response.

Corrosion behavior of austenitic stainless steels of SUS 316L and SUS304L in molten salt of LiCl and $LiCl/Li_2O$ has been investigated in the temperature range of $650~850^{\circ}C$. Corrosion products of SUS316L and 304L in hot molten salt consisted of two layers-an outer layer of Li(CrFe)$O_2$and an inner layer of$Cr_2O_3$. The corrosion layer was uniform in molten salt of LiCl, but the intergranular corrosion occurred in addition to the uniform corrosion in mixed molten salt of LiCl/$Li_2O$. The corrosion rate increased slowly with the increase of temperature up to $750^{\circ}C$, but above $750^{\circ}C$ rapid increase in corrosion rate observed. SUS316L stainless steel showed slower corrosion rate than SUS 304L, exhibiting higher corrosion resistance in the molten salt.
For every interval [a, b], we denote by (${\bar{x}}_A,{\bar{y}}_A$) and (${\bar{x}}_L,{\bar{y}}_L$) the geometric centroid of the area under a catenary y = k cosh((x - c)/k) defined on this interval and the centroid of the curve itself, respectively. Then, it is well-known that ${\bar{x}}_L={\bar{x}}_A$ and ${\bar{y}}_L=2{\bar{y}}_A$. In this paper, we show that one of ${\bar{x}}_L={\bar{x}}_A$ and ${\bar{y}}_L=2{\bar{y}}_A$ characterizes the family of catenaries among nonconstant $C^2$ functions. Furthermore, we show that among nonconstant and nonlinear $C^2$ functions, ${\bar{y}}_L/{\bar{x}}_L=2{\bar{y}}_A/{\bar{x}}_A$ is also a characteristic property of catenaries.
Porphyra pseudolinearis and P. dentata from Korea were crossed and the hybrid was cultured at different temperatures (5, 10, 15, 20 or $25^{\circ}C$), photon flux densities (10, 20, 40 or 80${\mu}$mol m$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$) under photoperiods (14L:10D and 10L:14D). In the hybrids, the conchocelis grew faster at 2$0^{\circ}C$ and 40$\mu$mol m$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ at $25^{\circ}C$ only, and were abundant, when cultured under 10L:14D. Foliose thalli of the hybrid grew rapidly at conditions of 10-2$0^{\circ}C$, 10L:14D and 15-2$0^{\circ}C$, 14L:10D but slowly at 5 and 2$0^{\circ}C$. No archeospores were observed any tested culture condition. Spermatangial and zygotosporangial sori were formed at the marginal portion o mature thallus. Zygotospores from the hybrid were released at 10-2$0^{\circ}C$ under both photoperiods, and gave rise to form conchocelis filament. Monoecious thalli were observed at 1$0^{\circ}C$ under 14L:10D. Neither monospores nor protothalli were produced from the conchocelis in culture.
GPS L2C signal is a recently added civil signal to L2 frequency and is constructed by time division multiplexing of civil moderate (L2-CM) and civil long (L2-CL) code signals. While the L2-CM code is 20 ms-periodic and modulates satellite navigation message, the L2-CL code is 1.5s-periodic with 767,250 chips long code sequence and carries no data. Therefore, the L2-CL code signal allows receivers to perform a very long coherent integration. However, due to the length of the L2-CL code, the acquisition of the L2-CL code signal may take too long or require too much hardware resources. In this paper, we propose a three-step ultra-fast L2-CL code acquisition (TSCLA) technique for dual band GPS receivers. In the proposed TSCLA technique, a dual band GPS receiver sequentially acquires the coarse/acquisition (C/A) code signal at L1 frequency, the L2-CM code signal, and the L2-CL code signal to minimize mean acquisition time (MAT). The theoretical performance analysis and numerous Monte Carlo simulations show the significant advantage of the proposed TSCLA technique over conventional techniques introduced in the literature.
The Bcl-2 family of proteins interacts at the mitochondria to regulate apoptosis. However, the anti-apoptotic Bcl-2 and $Bcl-X_L$ are not completely localized to the mitochondria. In an attempt to generate Bcl-2 and $Bcl-X_L$ chimeras that are constitutively localized to the mitochondria, we substituted their C-terminal transmembrane tail or both the C-terminal transmembrane tail and the adjacent loop with the equivalent regions from Bak or Bax mutant (BaxS184V) as these regions determine the mitochondrial localization of Bak and Bax. The effects of these substitutions on subcellular localization and their activities were assessed following expression in HeLa and CHO K1 cells. The substitution of the C-terminal tail or the C-terminal tail and the adjacent loop of Bcl-2 with the equivalent regions from Bak or the Bax mutant resulted in its association with the mitochondria. This change in subcellular localization of Bcl-2 chimeras triggered cells to undergo apoptotic-like cell death. The localization of this Bcl-2 chimera to the mitochondria may be associated with the disruption of mitochondrial membrane potential. Unlike Bcl-2, the loop structure adjacent to the C-terminal tail in $Bcl-X_L$ is crucial for its localization. To localize the $Bcl-X_L$ chimeras to the mitochondria, the loop structure next to the C-terminal tail in $Bcl-X_L$ protein must remain intact and cannot be substituted by the loop from Bax or Bak. The chimeric $Bcl-X_L$ with both its C-terminal tail and the loop structure replaced by the equivalent regions of Bak or Bax mutant localized throughout the entire cytosol. The $Bcl-X_L$ chimeras that are targeted to the mitochondria and the wild type $Bcl-X_L$ provided same protection against cell death under several death inducing conditions.
We define the spherical non-commutative torus $L_{\omega}$/ as the crossed product obtained by an iteration of l crossed products by actions of, the first action on C( $S^{2n+l}$). Assume the fibres are isomorphic to the tensor product of a completely irrational non-commutative torus $A_{p}$ with a matrix algebra $M_{m}$ ( ) (m > 1). We prove that $L_{\omega}$/ $M_{p}$ (C) is not isomorphic to C(Prim( $L_{\omega}$/)) $A_{p}$$M_{mp}$ (C), and that the tensor product of $L_{\omega}$/ with a UHF-algebra $M_{p{\infty}}$ of type $p^{\infty}$ is isomorphic to C(Prim( $L_{\omega}$/)) $A_{p}$$M_{m}$ (C) $M_{p{\infty}}$ if and only if the set of prime factors of m is a subset of the set of prime factors of p. Furthermore, it is shown that the tensor product of $L_{\omega}$/, with the C*-algebra K(H) of compact operators on a separable Hilbert space H is not isomorphic to C(Prim( $L_{\omega}$/)) $A_{p}$$M_{m}$ (C) K(H) if Prim( $L_{\omega}$/) is homeomorphic to $L^{k}$ (n)$\times$$T^{l'}$ for k and l' non-negative integers (k > 1), where $L^{k}$ (n) is the lens space.$T^{l'}$ for k and l' non-negative integers (k > 1), where $L^{k}$ (n) is the lens space.e.
Response surface methodology was used to optimize production conditions of monoacylglycerol (MAG) and diacylglycerols (DAG) from corn oil by enzymic glycerolysis. Contents of $1,3-DAG\;(Y_1),\;1,2-DAG\;(Y_2),\;total\;DAG\;(Y_3),\;MAG\;(Y_4)$, and total $DAG+MAG\;(Y_5)$ were obtained. Conditions were optimized using central composite design with incubation temperature $(35-75^{\circ}C,\;X_1)$, incubation time (1-11 hr, $X_2$), and amount of hexane added (0-2 mL, $X_3$) as three variables. Content of 1,3-DAG was maximized by 20.43 area% at incubation temperature of $44.92^{\circ}C$, incubation time of 10.24 hr, and hexane content of 1.16 mL, whereas that of 1,2-DAG (26.78 area%) was maximized at $56.32^{\circ}C$, 6.95 hr, and 1.04 mL, respectively. Predicted maximum total DAG content was 45.09 area% at $53.82^{\circ}C$, 8.03 hr, and 1.08 mL, while production conditions of MAG (9.57 arae%) were $64.14^{\circ}C$, 7.00 hr, and 0.13 mL. At variables of $54.07^{\circ}C$, 7.98 hr, and 1.02 mL, maximum content of total DAG+MAG predicted by RSM was 53.54 area%.
