To study the distribution of organophosphorus pesticides which are extensively used for agriculture in Korea. Sea water samples were taken from 4 coastal areas during May and August of 1997 and sediment samples were collected from two coastal areas in August of 1997. These samples were analyzed using a Gas Chromatography/Nitrogen Phosphorus Detector (GC/NPD). In August the most commonly found organophosphorus pesticides in the surface waters of Kunsan area were IBP < S-Benzyl O,O-di-isopropyl phosphorothioate > $(m=432.5ng\;L^{-1})$ and EDDP < O-ethyl S,S-diphenyl phosphorodithioate > $(m=37.4ng\;L^{-1}) $ which are largely used between June and September to prevent rice blast disease. In Danghang Bay, dry fields located near the mouth of the estuary seemed to affect the concentrations of certain organophosphorus pesticides in the surface waters. Since organophosphorus pesticides applied in the watershed are rapidly decomposed while being transported along freshwater streams, watershed size is not proportional to the concentrations of these pesticides in the coastal waters. Pesticides concentrations measured in August were compared with those in May. IBP concentrations in coastal waters were about an order of magnitude higher in August than in May. Temporal and geographical distribution of individual organophosphorus pesticides is likely to be affected by types of agricultural practices in the watershed. Chloropyrifos was the most important of the organophosphorus pesticides in the sediments of the study area because of its persistent nature and high affinity to particulates.
A single specimen of the family Agonidae was collected from the coastal waters of the East Sea, Korea. It was identified as Hypsagonus corniger Taranetz by having the first dorsal fin with seven spines, long supraoccipital spine, sharp spines of body plate, no process on the supralateral bony plates, the broader distance between the first and the second dorsal fins than base of the second dorsal fin, and longer second spine of the first dorsal fin than the first spine. A key to the genus Hypsagonus from Korea is provided. We propose a new Korean name, "Ga-si-jul-go-gi" for the species.
The collection of PM10 samples were collected by a PM10 hi-vol. air sampler from June, 1998 through May, 1999 in Kunsan located at western coastal region of Korea. We obtained 84 samples during sampling period. Samples were analyzed to quantify the concentration of ionic and metallic components such as SO42-, NO3-, Cl-, NH4+, K+, Na+, Mg2+, Zn, Cd, Cr, Pb and Fe. Seasonal variations of the concentrations by wind directions of each component were studied. We found that PM10 concentration had the highest level in winter and the lowest level in summer. When the wind direction is from west to east, the concentration of most ionic and metallic species were higher compared to reverse direction. That implied the effect of air pollutants from industrial area. Also, substantial amount of Na+ and Cl- were observed, which was assumed to the effect from the sea.
To investigate species composition and seasonal variation of demersal organisms in the coastal waters off the Taean peninsula, otter trawl surveys were conducted from April 2010 to January 2011. A total of 75 species were collected, including 44 species of Pisces, 19 species of Crustacea, 6 species of Cephalopoda, 4 species of Gastropoda, and 1 species each of Bivalvia and Echinoidea. The dominant species in each season were Palaemon gravieri in spring, Charybdis bimaculata in summer, Loligo japonica in autumn, and Crangon hakodatei in winter. The number of species, individuals and biomass were highest in autumn and lowest in winter. The diversity index was highest in summer and lowest in winter. The dominance index was highest in winter and lowest in summer. The richness index was highest in autumn and lowest in winter. The evenness index was highest in summer and lowest in autumn. A cluster analysis showed that demersal organisms were divided into two groups; spring and winter organisms (Group 1) and summer and autumn organisms (Group 2). We detected a significant difference (P<0.05) between these groups, mainly owing to Platycephalus indicus, Repomucenus koreanus, and Paralichthys olivaceus within Pisces: Trachysalambria curvirostris, Metapenaeopsis dalei, P. gravieri, and C. hakodatei within Crustacea: and L. japonica within Cephalopoda.
X-SAR images taken on the coastal waters of Hwanghe province in Korea during SIR-C/X-SAR campaign in April and October 1994 are analysed. The SAR images show the peculiar signatures like nail marks, curved long string, and vortex streets patterns and they all seem to be produced by strong interactions between the topography in the coastal waters and tidal currents. The nail mark signatures are located at the same position of small scaled sand banks and the curved line patterns are almost identical to the outer boundary of large sand banks. Based on the tidal record, all the three images are taken at the almost same phase of tidal cycles, which are close to the low tide. It seems that bottom shapes are more strongly appeared on the SAR images when the tidal currents are slow. The front between two different current velocities caused by the flows along the steep boundaries of sandbanks is also the main factors imprinting the bottom features to the sea surface SAR images

This paper presents an attempt to determine natural background levels of heavy metals which could be used for assessing heavy metal contamination. For this study, a large archive dataset of heavy metal concentration (Cu, Cr, Ni, Pb, Zn) for more than 900 surface sediment samples from various Korean coastal environments was newly compiled. These data were normalized for aluminum (grain-size normalizer) concentration to isolate natural factors from anthropogenic ones. The normalization was based on the hypothesis that heavy metal concentrations vary consistently with the concentration of aluminum, unless these metals are of anthropogenic origin. So, the samples (outliers) suspected of receivingany anthropogenic input were removed from regression to ascertain the "background" relationship between the metals and aluminum. Identification of these outliers was tested using a model of predicted limits at 95%. The process of testing for normality (Kolmogorov-Smirnov Test) and selection of outliers was iterated until a normal distribution was achieved. On the basis of the linear regression analysis of the large archive (please check) dataset, background levels, which are applicable to heavy metal assessment of Korean coastal sediments, were successfully developed for Cu, Cr, Ni, Zn. As an example, we tested the applicability of this baseline level for metal pollution assessment of Masan Bay sediments.
In order to examine the generation mechanism of long ocean waves along the west coast of Korea and to understand the amplification process of the long ocean waves, sea level, atmospheric pressure and wind data observed every minute from 2007 March 29 to 2007 April 1 were analyzed and onedimensional numerical ocean model experiments were performed. An atmospheric pressure jump propagated southeastward from Backryungdo to Yeonggwang along the west coast of Korea with speed of $13{\sim}27\;m/s$ between 2007 March 30 23:00 and 2007 April 1 1:30. Average magnitude of pressure jump was 4.2 hPa. As a moving atmospheric jump propagated from north to south along the coast, long ocean waves were generated and the sea level abnormally rose or fell at Anheung, Kunsan, Wido and Yeonggwang. Average amplitude of sea level rise (or fall) was about 113.6 cm. In a one-dimensional numerical ocean model, nonlinear shallow water equations were numerically integrated and a moving atmospheric pressure jump with traveling speed of 24 m/s was used as an external force. While the atmospheric pressure jump travels over 60 m depth ocean, a long ocean wave is generated. Because the propagation speed of the atmospheric jump is almost equal to that of the long ocean wave, Proudman resonance occurs and the long ocean wave amplifies. As the atmospheric pressure jump moves into the coastal area shallower than 60 m, the speed of the long ocean wave decreases and Proudman resonance effect decreases. However, the amplitude of the long ocean wave increases and wave length becomes shorter because of shoaling effect. When the long ocean wave hits the land boundary, amplitude of the long ocean wave drastically amplifies due to reflection. Data analysis and numerical experiments suggest that the southeastward propagation of an atmospheric pressure jump over the shallow ocean, which is a necessary condition for Proudaman resonance, generated the long ocean waves along the west coast of Korea on 2007 March 31 and the ocean waves amplified due to shoaling effect in the coastal area and reflection at the shore.
This thesis aims to contribute to upgrading its position to the biggest 8 ports in Korea by suggesting activating schemes of Kunsan Port in rapidly changing shipping environments. The research methodologies such as literature survey, O/D analysis are adopted in the study. The following several conclusions can be suggested. Firstly, in port logistics system the dredging in navigational channels and in Kumgang Dam and the incentive schemes for the shipping companies and the international freight forwarders are required. Secondly cargo inducement schemes should be introduced to induce container cargoes originated in Junbook Do Province and adjacent area etc. Thirdly the development of new shipping routes and strengthening the coastal routes among domestic sea ports. Fouthly establishing supply chain management system with adjacent Chinese Provinces such as Shandong.

The concern on the greenhouse gas emissions is increasing globally. Especially, the greenhouse gas emission from fisheries is an important issue due to Cancun Agreements Mexico in 1992 and the Kyoto protocol in 2005. Furthermore, the Korean government has a plan to reduce the GHG emissions as 5.2% compared to the BAU in fisheries until 2020. However, the investigation on the GHG emissions from Korean fisheries has not been executed much. Therefore, the quantitative analysis of GHG emissions from Korean fishery industry is needed as the first step to find a relevant way to reduce GHG emissions from fisheries. The purpose of this research is to investigate which degree of GHG emitted from the major coastal fisheries such as coastal gillnet fishery, coastal dual purpose fishery, coastal pots fishery and coastal small scale stow net fishery. Here, we calculated the GHG emission from the fisheries using the LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) method. The system boundary and input parameters for each process level are defined for LCA analysis. The fuel use coefficients of the fisheries are also calculated according to the fuel type. The GHG emissions from sea activities by the fisheries will be dealt with. Furthermore, the GHG emissions for the unit weight of fishes are also calculated with consideration to the different consuming areas. The results will be helpful to understand the circumstances of GHG emissions from Korean fisheries.
