Model Development for Increasing Shippers′ Attraction of Small and Medium Ports: With the Focus on Kunsan Ports (중소형항만의 화주유인증대를 위한 모형개발에 관한 연구 - 군산항을 중심으로-)

  • Although the small and medium ports are actually competing with various strategies, the definition and structural understanding of small and medium ports are not known very much. Therefore this study has launched from this fact, and has the objective of obtaining the structural model for increasing shippers' attraction of small and medium ports. The process began by abstracting the components that composed the success factors through recent research, and grouping it by FA(Factor Analysis) method. Also, by using the FSM(Fuzzy Structural Modeling) method to understand the structure of the grouped components, and the structural model for increasing shippers' attraction of small and medium ports was able to obtain as the result. When analyzing the obtained structural model, easiness of shipment, connection to hubport and efficiency of hinterland network came out to be the most important component groups.

Physical Environment Changes in the Keum River Estuary by the Dyke Gate Operation: I. Mean Sea Level and Tide (하구언 수문작동으로 인한 금강 하구역의 물리적 환경변화: I. 평균해수면과 조석)

  • Analyzing the tide data taken at Kunsan inner and Outer ports, non-tidal and mean sea level and harmonic constants of major constituents are investigated to examine the effects of the dyke gate operation on the sea level change in Keum River estuary. Non-tidal and annual mean sea levels decrease at Kunsan Inner and Outer ports after the dyke gate operation, especially showing an abrupt drop of non-tidal sea level at Kunsan Inner port. This non-tidal sea level drop results in the mean sea level gradient change between the inner and outer port, which can be mainly explained in terms of the decrease of river discharge from the dyke. Amplitudes of the $M_2$ and $S_2$ tides at the Inner port increase after the dyke gate operation, showing an abrupt jump, and phases of both tides slightly decrease. Amplitude and phase of the $K_1$ and $O_1$ tides show slight changes after the dyke gate operation. This significant change of semi diurnal tide amplitude is believed as a result of superposition of incident tidal wave and reflected tidal wave from the dyke.

  • This thesis aims to contribute to upgrading its position to the biggest 8 ports in Korea by suggesting activating schemes of Kunsan Port in rapidly changing shipping environments. The research methodologies such as literature survey, O/D analysis are adopted in the study. The following several conclusions can be suggested. Firstly, in port logistics system the dredging in navigational channels and in Kumgang Dam and the incentive schemes for the shipping companies and the international freight forwarders are required. Secondly cargo inducement schemes should be introduced to induce container cargoes originated in Junbook Do Province and adjacent area etc. Thirdly the development of new shipping routes and strengthening the coastal routes among domestic sea ports. Fouthly establishing supply chain management system with adjacent Chinese Provinces such as Shandong.

Analysis of Tidal Observations at Major Ports around Korean Coast (우리나라 주요항만의 조위분석)

  • This work represents results of analysis of tidal observations at twelve major ports(Inchon, Kunsan, Mokpo, Daeheuksando, Jeju, Yeosu, Jinhae, Busan, Pohang, Ulsan, Mugho, Sogcho) around Korean coast for the years up to 1979. The reduction of hourly tide gauge sea level records provided by Korean Hydrographic Office was performed in systematic manner resulting digitised hourly observed series, predicted series and residual series. As a first step the application of an extended harmonic method of analyzing the tidal observations leads to the identification of 42 new constituents including 60 orthodox Doodson's constituents at major ports. The sea level statistics including sea level frequency distribution are presented and the tidal emersion curves showing the percentage of time for which different levels are covered by water and exposed are also presented to provide useful design input for coastal development. This study has teen undertaken in association with the programme of sea level research at Korean Hydrographic Office and the programme of adjustment of first order levelling network at National Geographic Institute.

The Comparative Study on the Efficiency of Kunsan Port (군산항만의 효율성 비교연구)

  • By using data envelopment analysis(DEA) this research measures the efficiency of Korea's seven middle-sized seaports and their Malmquist productivity from 1998 to 2007. Under the assumption of CRS(constant returns to scale) and VRS(variable returns to scale), seaports' ranking of efficiency are measured. Kunsan Port is confirmed as a middle-performed port in the various measurements. Important finding facts are as follows. 1)Kunsan Port has the efficiency level from 53% to 57% of efficient ports' level under the assumption of CRS and VRS. 2)In terms of average efficiency level, the gap among these 7 seports' efficiency levels has been widened during the period from 1998 to 2007. 3)Kunsan Port has shown the characteristics of DRS more frequently in terms of returns to scale. 4) Kunsan Port's average total factor productivity has been lower at the rate of 0.7% during the period from 1998 to 2007. 5)Kunsan Port has shown technical progress at the rate of 3.1% in this period. In future research the more and better data will be expected to improve the understanding of Korean seaports' efficiency characteristics.

Estimation of Seismic Fragility for Busan and Incheon Harbor Quay Walls (부산 및 인천항만 안벽구조물의 지진취약도 예측)

  • Nowadays, small and medium-sized earthquakes occur frequently in the west coast of Korea. The earthquake induced damages on the harbor structure such as quay wall possibly make a severe impact on national economy. Therefore, not only a seismic design for the structures but warning system for seismic damage right after the occurrence of earthquake should be developed. In this study, seismic fragility analysis was performed to be given to earthquake damage prediction system for quay wall structures in Busan and Incheon harbor. Four types of structures such as pier-type, caisson type, counterfort type, block-type were analyzed and fragility curves of functional performance level and collapse prevention level based on displacement criteria were found. Regression analyses by using the results of the two ports were done for possible use in other port structures.

Load & Resistance Factors Calibration for Limit State Design of Non-Perforated Caisson Breakwater (직립무공케이슨방파제 한계상태설계를 위한 하중저항계수 보정)

  • Load resistance factors for the limit state design of vertical caisson breakwaters are presented. Reliability analysis of 16 breakwaters in nationwide ports was conducted to calculate the partial safety factors and they were converted into load and resistance factors. The final load resistance factor was calibrated by applying the optimization technique to the individually calculated load resistance factors. Finally, the breakwater was redesigned using the optimal load resistance factor and verified whether the target level was met. The load resistance factor according to the change of the target reliability level is presented to facilitate the limit state design of breakwater.

  • Calibration of load-resistance factors for the limit state design of perforated caisson breakwaters are presented. Reliability analysis of 12 breakwaters in nationwide ports was conducted. Then, partial safety factors and load-resistance factors were sequentially calculated according to target reliability index. Load resistance factors were optimized to give one set of factor for limit state design of breakwater. The breakwaters were redesigned by using the optimal load resistance factor and verified whether reliability indices larger than the target value. Finally, some load-resistance factors were proposed by changing target reliability index.
