  • Purpose: This study was done to examine the incidence of oral mucositis in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation patients and to identify factors influencing oral mucositis and patient outcomes according to severity. Methods: In this retrospective study, data were collected from electronic medical records of 222 patients who had received hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Oral mucositis was evaluated using WHO's assessment scale. Data were analyzed using Chi-square test, Fisher exact test, Spearman's correlation, Ordinal logistic regression, ANOVA and Kruskal-Wallis test. Results: A total of 69.8% of the patients evaluated developed oral mucositis (grade II and over). As a results of ordinal regression, factors influencing oral mucositis severity were found to be diagnosis, type of transplantation, oxygen inhalation and the number of antiemetics administration before transplantation. The severity of oral mucositis was found to increase the days of hospitalization, days of TPN administration, days of using antibiotics and the number and dosage of analgesics. Conclusion: The results would help predict severity of oral mucositis in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation patients and suggest that provision of appropriate nursing assessment and oral care would improve patient outcomes.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of several surface coating agents in preventing microleakage and increasing microhardness of light-cured glass ionomer restoration. 50 and 25 sound molar teeth were used for the microleakage test and microhardness test respectively. Data were analyzed statistically using Kruskal-Wallis and/or Mann-Whitney test. The results of the present study were as follows: 1. The effect of surface coating in reducing microleakage was proven only at the gingival margin of restorations with statistical significance(p<.05). 2. The distribution of microleakage score at gingival margin was shown to be better than that of occlusal margin in general but with no statistically significant differences(p>.05). 3. No statistically significant differences in microhardness could be found between groups (p>.05) regardless of depth of measurement. 4. Under the present experimental conditions, the types or application of surface coating agents did not impose any significant effect on microhardness of glass ionomer restorative material whereas the protective effect of surface coating in reducing microleakage was partly proven.

  • Although there exist numerous measures of association, most of them are lacking in generality in that they do not intend to measure the association between heterogeneous type of random variables. On the other hand, many statistical analyzes dealing with complex data sets require a very sophisticate measure of association. In this note, the p-value of independence tests is utilized to obtain a measure of association. The proposed measure of association have some consistency in measuring association between various types of random variables.

  • The purpose of the present research was to study developmental trends in and relationships between recall, organizational strategy, and metamemory in young children. The subjects were 84 children, 14 boys and 14 girls at each age level, 4, 6, and 8. Two tasks (memory task & metamemory task) were used to assess children's recall, organizational strategy, and metamemory based on Sodian et al.(1986). All subjects were randomly assigned either to the play-and-remember condition or to the sort-and-remember condition. The two tasks were administered to children individually with the memory task followed by the metamemory task. The data were analysed by the statistical methods of two-way ANOVA, Student-Newman-Keuls post hoc test, Mann-Whitney U test, Kruskal-Wallis test, Pearson's correlation coefficient and Kendall's Tau. Children's recall (free, conceptually-cued, and perceptually-cued) level increased with age. There were significant experimental condition differences in free recall and conceptually-cued recall, but not in perceptually-cued recall. Children's organizational strategy showed differential developmental trends by experimental condition. Use of conceptual strategy at both encoding and retrieval increased with age in both experimental conditions. Use of perceptual strategy (PS) at encoding showed an inverted-U age effect in the play-and-remember condition, but PS decreased linearly with age in the sort-and-remember condition. There were significant age differences in metamemory, and there were significant correlations between recall and organizational strategy.
