The study was conducted to investigate the dietary behaviors and lifestyles of Korean university students and Chinese international students in the Jeonbuk area. Self-administered questionnaires were collected from 241 Korean university students and 198 Chinese international students. Statistical data analysis was completed using SPSS v. 12.0. Breakfast-skipping among subjects was very common, and the most frequently given reason for skipping this meal was 'lack of time'. More than 85% of Korean male students and 75% of Korean female students reported regularly eating lunch in university canteens or restaurants around campus, whereas 86% of Chinese male students and 82% of Chinese female students regularly ate their lunches in university canteens or at home. About 62% of Korean male students, 72% of Korean female students, 48% of Chinese male students, and 70% of Chinese female students responded that they do not regularly eat dinner, the main reasons cited for this being 'irregularity of lifestyle' and 'part-time work'. Snack intake by the subjects was high. Beverages were the snack item most frequently consumed by Korean and Chinese male students, whereas cookies and fruits were most frequently consumed by Korean and Chinese female students. About 28% of Korean male students and 44% of Chinese male students were smokers, respectively. Half of Chinese female students drank alcohol once or twice a week. About 42% of Korean male students and 65% of Chinese male students played sports, respectively. Dietary behaviors and lifestyles of Korean and Chinese students tended to be very similar. Chinese students performed more health-oriented activities in comparison to Korean students. In conclusion, a practical and foreigner-friendly nutritional education program should be devised in order to correct the dietary behaviors and health-related lifestyles of Korean and Chinese students.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the difference in health-promoting behavior of Han-Chinese to Korean-Chinese university students in Korea. Methods: Subjects were 111 Han-Chinese and 105 Korean- Chinese university students. The data was collected using structured questionnaires from January 5 to May 30, 2009. The data analysis was carried out using the SPSS/WIN 12.0 program. Results: The average score of health- promoting behavior for Chinese students was 2.55, 2.49 for Korean-Chinese students and 2.61 for Han-Chinese students. The mean score of health-promoting behavior of Korean-Chinese students was lower than that of the Han-Chinese group (t=2.048, p=.042). There were significant differences in health- promoting behaviors according to socio-demographic characteristics between Han-Chinese and Korean-Chinese university students. The mean score of health-promoting behavior showed significant differences according to marital status (t=2.019, p=.046) in Han-Chinese students while there were significant differences in health-promoting behaviors according to motivation for studying abroad (t=2.732, p=.033) in Korean-Chinese students. Conclusion: Health-promoting programs should be developed for both Han-Chinese and Korean-Chinese students by considering socio-demographic characteristics. Korean-Chinese may be targeted as a priority group for promoting health behaviors.
The objective of this study was to find variables related to materialism of university students in Korea and Japan. A questionnaire research method was conducted and 477 samples were selected. Korean university students have higher materialism than Japanese university students. Korean undergraduates are influenced by reference group, but Japanese university students are influenced by group identity. Materialism of Korean university students are influenced by nonmaterialism, reference group, perception of living level, self concept, pocket money, mother's job. Materialism of Japan university students is influenced by nonmaterialism, group identity, perception of living level, grade. The strongest predictor of materialism of Korean university students is nonmaterialism, followed by reference group. The strongest predictor of materialism of Japanese university students is nonmaterialism, followed by group identity.
The purpose of this study was to analyze adaptation for Korean foods and satisfaction for university foodservice by nationality and residence period of Chinese and Japanese university students in Daejeon, Republic of Korea. Among 330 questionnaires distributed to Chinese and Japanese students, 294 complete questionnaires (89.1%) were analyzed. The questionnaire included two 5-point scales for measuring levels adaptation of for Korean food and satisfaction with university foodservice, respectively. Japanese students' level of adaptation for Korean food (3.16) was significantly higher than that of Chinese students (2.96). As the length of residence in Korea increased, the frequency of using university lunch service per week significantly decreased. The main factor when selecting a menu item was food taste (39.8%, 22.8%) in both Chinese and Japanese students, whereas the next main factor was preference (16.4%) in Chinese students and nutrition (18.7%) in Japanese students. The preferred cooking methods for meat were stir-frying (31.6%) and roasting (25.9%). For fish, Chinese students preferred braising (32.7%), whereas Japanese students preferred roasting (26.8%). Both Chinese and Japanese students preferred sukchae (45.6%, 43.1%) for vegetables. Factor analysis grouped 17 items measuring university foodservice into four factors, 'sanitation & employee service', 'physical environment', 'food' and 'customized menu & information' and the mean scores were 3.56, 3.30, 3.20 and 3.00, respectively. Chinese students were significantly more satisfied than Japanese students with the 'physical environment', 'sanitation & employee service' and 'customized menu & information'. These results suggest that efforts such as developing a greater variety of menu items with mild tastes and somewhat less flavor, applying preferred cooking methods, offering special menus for foreign students, providing nutrition information on menus, and offering a description of menu items in the foreign languages could improve Chinese and Japanese students' levels of satisfaction with university foodservice.
The purpose of this study was to compare and analyze the assessment of salty taste and high-salt dietary behaviors of Korean university students and their Chinese counterparts. The researchers developed a taste assessment computer program focusing on preference for salty taste, and it was applied to 300 university students, including 100 Korean students, and 100 Chinese students in Daegu of South Korea, and 100 Chinese students in Shenyang of China (144 males and 156 females). The results of the taste assessment of Chinese and Korean university students are as follows. Among males, Koreans (36.0%), Chinese students in Korea (36.2%), and Chinese (40.4%) scored highest in the "a bit salty" followed by "normal." Among females, Koreans (36.0%), Chinese students in Korea (49.1%), and Chinese (28.3%) scored highest in the "normal". In terms of salt concentration in solution, among the male subjects, most Koreans favored the salt concentration of 0.31%, which is considered to be a "normal" concentration; most Chinese students in Korea favored 0.63%, which is considered to be "a bit salty", and most Chinese favored the concentration of 1.25%, which is considered to be "salty". As for the female subjects, Koreans, Chinese students studying abroad, and Chinese favored 0.31%, the "normal" level of concentration. Korean students scored higher than Chinese students in Korea and Chinese students both in males and females (p < 0.001, p < 0.01), in terms of high-salt dietary behaviors favored salty taste. This study suggests that Chinese university students need nutrition education in terms of modifying eating behaviors to reduce dietary salt intake.

This exploratory study is aimed at exploring the validity of the Science Motivation Questionnaire (SMQ) developed for university students, to measure the science motivation of middle school students and analyze the differences on gender and country factors of SMQ. A total of 371 students participated in this study: 171 middle school students from the USA and 200 secondary students from Korea. All participants were enrolled in the STEM program and activities in Utah, USA (for US students) and at a Korean university institute for gifted and talented students (for Korean students). In this study, exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses and latent mean analysis were used to analyze the gender and country differences. The results indicated that the 25 items of SMQ scale were theoretically meaningful and valid for middle school students. The latent mean difference by gender indicated that male students have higher intrinsic motivation, career motivation, grade motivation, and self-determination than female students. Moreover, a significant difference exists in these factors between the two countries. Further findings reveal that Korean students scored higher than US students in terms of the aforementioned factors. This study will provide significant insights in and contribution to science motivation issues in STEM education and the development of design-based engineering programs.
The purpose of this study was to investigate knowledge and attitude about oral contraceptive between Korean and Japanese university students in order to provide better sex education programs and direcrion. Korean subjects of this study were 337 university students in M city, during the period from April 1 to April 20, 2001 and Japanese subjects 245, during the period from June to August, 2001. Collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, Pearson correlation coefficients with SPSS package. The results from this study were summarized as follows : 1. The mean age of Koreans and Japanese students was $21.0{\pm}3.2$ and $19.6{\pm}3.2$ years old. The number of Japaneses youths having the parter with sexual intercourse was larger than that of Korean university students. 2. Comparison of knowledge and attitude about oral contraceptives between Korean and Japanese university students ; 1) Comparison of sexual differences : Oral contraceptives related knowledge of Korean university students marked $55.7{\pm}7.5$ of male students and $56.7{\pm}6.2$ of females with a range of 15 to 75. The level of female students' knowledge was higher than that of male's but there is not statistically a significant difference (p=.080). Oral contraceptives related attitude of Korean university students marked $81.1{\pm}12.2$ of male students and $76.9{\pm}10.3$ of female's with a range of 24 to 120. The level of male students' attitude was higher than that of female's and there is statistically a significant difference(p= 002). Oral contraceptives related knowledge of Japanese university students marked $55.3{\pm}6.7$ of male students and $57.0{\pm}6.3$ of female students. The level of female students' knowledge was higher than that of male's but there is not statistically a significant difference (p=.159). Oral contraceptives related attitude of Japanese university students marked $80.3{\pm}10.1$ of male students and $80.4{\pm}9.9$ of female students. The level of female students' attitude was higher than that of male's and there is not statistically a significant difference(p= .928). 2) Comparison between the country : Oral conceptives related knowledge of Korean university students marked $56.2{\pm}6.8$ and $56.7{\pm}6.4$ of Japanese university students with a range of 15 to 75. The level of Japanese university students' knowledge was higher than that of Korean's but there is not statistically a significant difference(p= .361). Oral conceptives related attitude of Korean university students marked $78.9{\pm}11.4$ and $80.4{\pm}9.9$ of Japaneses with a range of 24 to 120. The level of Japanese university studentss' attitude was higher than that of Korean's and there is not statistically a significant difference(p=.100). 2. Wanted age of oral contraceptives taking medicine and age was correlated positively (r=.178, p=.004) and total knowledge score of oral contraceptives and total attitude score were correlated positively(r=.467 p= .000) in Korean university students. Think that this is result by dissimilar health medical system and cultural difference between two countries.
Purpose: This research was conducted to investigate perceived health status, health promoting behaviors and depression level in Korean and foreign students at women's university. Methods: The sample group of this study consists of 100 Korean students at a women's university and 98 foreign students from China and Vietnam who were enrolled at the same university in G City. The research results were analyzed using the SAS program (Version 8.2) with Chi-square test, Fisher's exact test and t-test. Results: 1) The Korean students showed a significantly higher score in drinking and smoking than foreign students. Also, age, religion, part time job, stress and allowance were significantly different between the two groups. 2) The foreign students showed a significantly higher score in perceived health status and health promoting behavior than the Korean students. 3) The foreign students showed a significantly higher score in depression than the Korean students. Conclusion: In the development of health programs for foreign students, it is necessary to focus on reducing depression and to consider the traditions of their own countries. It is desired to conduct further study about health promoting behavior and factors affecting health with respect to the countries where the foreign students originated.
Purpose: This study was to explore the differences of Korean and Chinese university students for developing smoking cessation program. Methods: The Data was collected from 120 Korean, 103 Chinese undergraduate students by using structured questionnaire from 1st April to 31st July, 2012. Results: The necessity of smoking cessation training was found that there were differences between two groups, showing that 60% of Korean university students and 35% of Chinese university studying in Korea were award of the necessity. For the score of smoking knowledge, there were significant differences between two groups, showing 13.60 from Korean students and 14.63 from Chinese students, but there were no differences towards Smoking attitude, self-efficacy related to smoking cessation, and Nicotine dependency. On the other hand, there were no significant differences toward demand of overall smoking cessation training between Korean and Chinese students, showing 43.4 and 45.1 scores in each group. Conclusion: The results of this study would be helpful to develop smoking cessation programs and health promotion strategies for both Korean and Chinese university students.
The purpose of this study was to review health and adjustment issues of Korean students in the context of international students' health in the United States. The number of international students studying in the United States has increased. In addition, more and more Koreans come to the United States for education. Korean students formed the fifth largest international group found on American campuses. As more and more international students study on American campuses, their health needs and problems became a concern to health professionals. Most health problems international students experience are stress related and psychosomatic. These students also have difficulties in using health care services. International students face barriers to obtaining health care because of differences in language and differences in cultural beliefs toward health. Korea manifests an eastern culture which is quite different from the western culture, so many Korean students studying in the United States experience difficulties in adjustment and using health care services. The study on the needs of Korean students in the U.S. reviewed in this research was a survey of 105 Korean students at the Pennsylvania State University, 1990. Korean students' health problems included stress, colds, fatigue, and headaches. Homesickness, financial problems, and academic problems were also important problems the Korean students faced. Korean students usually did not participate in any activities with Americans as much as with Koreans. Most Korean students did not participated in any health education workshops held on campus. This may be because the students had not participated previously in health education workshops conducted on campuses in Korea. Korean student's confidence with the English language appeared to be an important variable in using or not using the university health services. University health professionals in the United States need to develop better information system for international students so that they may better use the health services provided on campus. Also, university health professionals working on campuses in Korea need to put more attention on health of college students and provide on-campus health education workshops which meet the student's needs.
