  • the splendid Chinese ship-building technology enjoys a long history and has an important place in the world ship building history. Up to present, the study of ship-building technology focuses on the study of western ship-building technology, so the study of Chinese ship-building technology can remedy this. With the development of society, ship-building technology enjoys a fast development, in Song dynasty (960-1279) the Chinese ship-building technology had developed very much. Its main characteristics are the large size of ships and the rapid increase in number. The Chinese ship-building technology of Song dynasty established basis for thai of Yuan dynasty, thus a study on the Chinese ship-building technology of Song dynasty can help better understand the Chinese ship-building history.

  • In this study, a ship motion control system design method is introduced for autonomous ships. Some related research results and technologies for autonomous ships have already been developed and applied to ships. For example, the Norwegian Maritime Authority and the Coastal Administration have signed an agreement that allows to test of autonomous ships in the defined area (port to port). Many countries and industries are pursuing to realize the autonomous vessel in the real world. In this paper, the authors try to develop related technology. As basic research, a ship model of the pilot vessel is developed and physical parameters are identified by experiment and simulations. Using the mathematical ship model, a control system is designed and control performance is evaluated by simulations.

  • The safety of the ship manoeuver is dependent not only on the inherent characteristics of the ship itself and environmental conditions, but also on the skill and experience of the ship operator. As the ship operator's judgement is related to his experience and skill, based on outside information, piloted controllability also depends upon the effectiveness, accuracy and reliability of various information which is obtainable from navigational equipments and aids to navigation that are available to the ship ope-rator. Although these factors, human factors and informational factors, have been pointed out as major factors which affect the controllability of a ship, there was no a comprehensive examination on the effect of these two factors. In this thesis, therefore, an attempt was made to examine whether or not there is clear indication that these two factors affect the controllability of a ship in reality. Experiments were conducted using the port design simulator of the Korea Maritime University.

  • Since very large and high-speed ships have been appeared in marine transportation from 1970s, these ships with poor maneuverability have made large-scale accidents frequently all over the world. The IMO(International Maritime Organization) recommended that ship designers should evaluate various maneuvering performance at initial stage and serve them to ship operators when they deliver a new ship. Meantime, it is expected that ships with large and wide superstructure would have poor maneuverability when they are affected by strong wind. Therefore, car carrier ship with large superstructure was selected to confirm how the ship responds to the external wind forces in this paper. The lateral and transverse projected areas above the water level were considered and ship behaviors were checked by change of rudder angles under severe wind conditions of different directions. In addition, hydrodynamic derivatives and coefficients were predicted from ship particulars and numerical calculations were carried out with the mathematical model of low speed maneuvering motions.

  • The small-waterplane-area-twin-hull(SWATH) ship has been recognized as a promising high performance ship because of her superior seakeeping characteristics and large deck area for various operations compared to the conventional monohull ship. significant advances in analytical technics for the prediction of the ship motions, wave loads and structural responses, structural fatigue and its prediction, and hull vibration for ship motions, wave loads and structural responses, structural fatigue and its prediction, and hull vibration for SWATH ship have been much developed during the last twenty years. Based on these developments in technology an integrated computational procedures for prediction wave loads and structural responses can be used to get a accurate results. But the major problem of SWATH ship's structural design is the accurate prediction of structural responses by the maximum critical loads likely to be experienced during the life of SWATH. To get a easier and safer computational procedures and the analytical approach for determining the accurate structural responses, a case study has been presented through the project experienced.

  • Ship system can be divided into four sub-systems: hull, propeller, main engine and operation system which severely affect the characteristics of a ship. In determining ship speed in waves, two factors are considered the involuntary speed loss due to added resistance caused by wind and waves, and the voluntary speed loss by command of operation system to prevent severe ship motions. In this paper, the main function of four sub-system is analyzed for input/output relations and propulsive coefficient and a useful method to predict involuntary speed loss of a ship is presented. Two calculated examples for a high speed container ship and a passenger ship with single screw and diesel engine are given.

  • This paper presents a decision making model for the cruise ship management. A network based optimization model has been developed for a single cruise ship operation. It gives optimal itinerary patterns over the planning period for the cruise ship managers wanting to maximize profit from the cruise ship operation. A network solution method to find the optimal solution is also developed. This network model can be equivalently transformed into a linear programming model, which makes the implementation of the model quite practical however complicated the given set of possible itineraries may be. The ship scheduling network developed in this study can also be used as a general framework to describe all possible cruise ship itineraries the cruise ship manager can figure out.

  • When a ship is running in following and quartering seas and on a crest with the ship′s length being nearly the same as the wave length, ship′s stability will be lost most; "T" shape crests with highly concentrated energy will appear during the process of transformation from irregular waves to regular ones, and the ship may be under continuous impact of large waves for a long period of time; Synchronism will also appear when the ship′s natural period of rolling and period of encounter are close to each other. For safe navigation, proper stability should be well ensured, proper speed and course chosen with speed under 1.8L1/2 kn (L is the ship′s length), initial listing avoided, special attention paid to steering.

  • Habitability is one of the most important points when a passenger ship is cruising. In particular, anti-vibration design should be considered preferentially to offer passenger a comfort cabin and leisure space. But, a passenger ship is different from a general commercial ship in the view point of the structural arrangement. It is restricted within narrow limits to reinforce wide panels and local structures of a passenger ship because of its interior design. Moreover, the allowable vibratory limits for a passenger ship are much lower than those of a commercial ship. In this study are introduced the procedure of the vibration analysis, the structural improvement method for prevention of vibration and the results of vibration measurement during exciter test and sea trials.

  • On this research, recognizing that ship inspection and audit services are closely related in Improving ship safety, the importance of active quality managements of ship inspection and audit services have been notified. For this research, based on previous research results, Quality managements of ship inspection and audit services were divided into the following aspects; the source of quality managements, execution of quality managements and outcome of quality managements. The results of this study is as follows. Overall, it is clearly shown that the elements of quality managements execution such as management responsibilities, resource management., product realization, measurement and analyzation, and improvement had also acted as a mediator between the relation of quality managements source and outcome.
