  • This study is conducted to evaluate the social concern of the related issues through trend analysis of reports on Oriental medical care in major domestic newspapers including Dong-a Ilbo, Hankook Ilbo, Chosunilbo, and JoongAng Ilbo. Materials of this study were collected from a total of 1,039 reports on Oriental medical care by internet search of each newspaper company's homepage from fan 1, 1993 to Dec 31, 1999. Two researchers analyzed the trend of report contents on Oriental medical care by publication year. The major results were as follows: The most frequent subject in these reports related to Oriental medical care was 'disease', appearing in 45.5% (473) of tile reports, followed by 'oriental health system (31.5%)' and "oriental medical facilities (16.5%)'. Also, topics on the collaborative efforts of Oriental and Western medical care were reported in 7.9% of the cases. According to a survey of the opinions held for the contents in these reports, 51.0% reports held neutral views while 48.2% and only 0.8% reports had favorable and negative views, respectively. In conclusion, the reports covering Oriental medical care in major domestic newspapers have increased in recent times and many held favorable views. Considering the widespread influence of mass-media, the government and health-related organizations must continuously monitor the opinions in daily newspapers, for the opinions are the influencing force of health-rotated behaviors and changes. In this light, these organizations should enforce the health policy on strategies for mutual development of Western and Oriental medicine in Korea.

  • Objectives : This study investigated the actual condition of an oriental medical office in a public health center. Methods : We classified patients who visited an oriental medical office in the public health center of Gyeyang-gu over a 1-year period, according to age, sex, disease, etc. The number of patients was 6529. Results : Analyzing these 6529 persons, 65.8% were female, and 79.6% were seniors aged over 65. By disease category motor systemic disease or circulatory disease affected 84% of the patients. By medication or treatment category. O-Juk-San (五積散) at 38.3% was the greatest proportion, and Pal-Mul-Tang (八物湯) the second greatest. As to medical fee, 80.2% of the patients were not charged for treatment. Conclusions : The extract of herbal medication should be more expanded in the medical insurance, and should be improved in quality. The oriental medical office in a public health center should focus more on health promotion and disease prevention than patient care. For accomplishing this goal, the institutional position and rights of oriental medical doctors as civil officials should be equal to those of western medical doctors.

  • Through the sociological approach on the Oriental Medical Insurance, 1 has reflected on the necessity and propriety of the Herb-pack Medicine Insurance, what the government and the Oriental Medicines as the main organization of it should think about. So I come to the conclusion as follows ; First, medical sociological approach must precede the study on the Herb-pack Medicine Insurance and in the process concrete, political problem must be solved. Second, although the Oriental Medicines has a different way from the Western Medicines, it comes to take up a part of health service field with its independent efforts. And coming changes count on whether the Oriental Medicines exert independently or not. Third, due to the original limit of the Oriental Medical Insurance, it has little effect on the Oriental Medicine Service's popularization and development. Yet bit gives the opportunity to present where the Oriental medicines should go and the way to develop it is the practice of the Herb-pack Medicine Insurance. fourth, so it can be said that the practice of the Herb-pack Medicine Insuranceis our important plan which can not only make the Oriental Medicines improve as the professional jods but also solve the contradiction of the Korea Medicines
