  • This paper presents a precise geoid (PNU95 Geoid) over the southern half of the Korean peninsula. The geoid using the OSU91A reference gravity model to degree and order of 167 with an integration radius of 27 km fits to the well-distributed 71 GPS data best. The RMS difference between the modeled geoid and the GPS/leveling-implied geoid is 0.15 m, and its accuracy with respect to the GPS/leveling distance is 1.1 ppm. The resulting PNU95 Geoid varies from 21.8 m at the western part of the peninsula, Kanghwa-Do, to 30.2 m at the south-eastern part. Kyungju, generally increasing eastward.

  • In this paper, initial value problem for dynamical astronomy will be established using parabolic cylindrical coordinates. Computation algorithm is developed for the initial value problem of gravity perturbed trajectories. Applications of the algorithm for the problem of final state predication are illustrated by numerical examples of seven test orbits of different eccentricities. The numerical results are extremely accurate and efficient in predicating final state for gravity perturbed trajectories which is of extreme importance for scientific researches as well as for military purposes. Moreover, an additional efficiency of the algorithm is that, for each of the test orbits, the step size used for solving the differential equations of motion is larger than 70% of the step size used for obtaining its reference final state solution.

  • We present an optical UBVRI photometric analysis of the poorly studied open star cluster IC 2156 using Sloan Digital Sky Survey data in order to estimate its astrophysical properties. We compare these with results from our previous studies that relied on the 2MASS JHK near-infrared photometry. The stellar density distributions and color-magnitude diagrams of the cluster are used to determine its geometrical structure, real radius, core and tidal radii, and its distance from the Sun, the Galactic plane, and the Galactic center. We also estimate, the age, color excesses, reddening-free distance modulus, membership, total mass, luminosity function, mass function, and relaxation time of the cluster.

  • Sampling rates become inconsistent when spatial data in the spherical coordinate are resampled with respect to latitudinal or longitudinal degree for mathematical processes such as Fourier Transform, and this results in distortions of the processed data in the wavenumber domain. These distortions are more evident in the polar regions. An example is presented to show such distortions during the recovery process of free-air gravity anomalies from ERS-1 satellite radar altimeter data from the Barents Sea in the Russian Arctic, and a method is presented to minimize the distortion using the Lambert Conformal Conic map projection. This approach was found to enhance the free-air gravity anomalies in both data and wavenumber domains.

  • This paper presents the results of the ocean surface current velocity estimation using 6 Radarsat-1 SAR images acquired in west coastal area near Incheon. We extracted the surface velocity from SAR images based on the Doppler shift approach in which the azimuth frequency shift is related to the motion of surface target in the radar direction. The Doppler shift was measured by the difference between the Doppler centroid estimated in the range-compressed, azimuth-frequency domain and the nominal Doppler centroid used during the SAR focusing process. The extracted SAR current velocities were statistically compared with the current velocities from the high frequency(HF) radar in terms of averages, standard deviations, and root mean square errors. The problem of the unreliable nominal Doppler centroid for the estimation of the SAR current velocity was corrected by subtracting the difference of averages between SAR and HF-radar current velocities from the SAR current velocity. The corrected SAR current velocity inherits the average of HF-radar data while maintaining high-resolution nature of the original SAR data.

  • The city of Khartoum, the capital of Sudan, was heavily damaged by the flood of the Nile in 2020. Classification using satellite images can define the damaged area and help emergency response. As Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) uses microwave that can penetrate cloud, it is suitable to use in the flood study. In this study, Random Forest classifier, one of the supervised classification algorithms, was applied to the flood event in Khartoum with various sizes of the training dataset and number of images using Sentinel-1 SAR. To create a training dataset, we used unsupervised classification and visual inspection. Firstly, Random Forest was performed by reducing the size of each class of the training dataset, but no notable difference was found. Next, we performed Random Forest with various number of images. Accuracy became better as the number of images in creased, but converged to a maximum value when the dataset covers the duration from flood to the completion of drainage.

  • Mining activity causes environmental pollution and geological hazards such as ground subsidence or landslide of which continuous monitoring is necessary. In this study, the activity on the Fushun West Open-Pit Mine (FWOPM), one of the largest open-pit coal mines in Asia located in Fushun, Liaoning Province, China, was analyzed by using a time-series Sentinel-1 InSAR coherence dataset. By using the difference between the two Digital Elevation Models (DEM) of the area, it was possible to confirm that there was a stockpiling activity in the western area of the FWOPM while excavation activity in the eastern area. By using RGB composite images using the yearly-averaged InSAR coherence images, the activity of the mine was confirmed by period, which was confirmed by Google Earth optical images. As a result, it was possible to confirm three landslides and the related activities on the northwest slope and the dumping activity on the west slope of FWOPM.
