Five dogs presented to the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital of the Konkuk University and Hangang Animal Hospital with a history of foreign body ingestion. On physical examination, five dogs showed lethargy, anorexia, or vomiting. Plain radiographs revealed that radiopaque foreign bodies lodged in the heart base or caudal thoracic esophagus. Positive contrast esophagogram revealed that large foreign bodies severely expanded the esophagus and there was no evidence of leakage of the contrast agent from the esophagus into the thoracic cavity. Gastrotomy for retrieval of esophageal foreign bodies using long forceps technique was performed. Esophageal foreign bodies were successfully retrieved in all dogs. The follow-ups were completed 10 days to 2 years after surgery. The follow-up information was based on physical examination by veterinarians and telephone interview with owners. The owners reported that there was no evidence of complications related to surgery such as vomiting, regurgitation, dysphagia, gagging, hyper-salivation, or anorexia in all dogs.
In this study, we analyzed the computed tomography (CT) measurements of lung volume and density in dogs with relation to body weight, age, sex, and breed. The multi-detector CT examination of the thorax was performed on dogs without respiratory or cardiovascular diseases. Three-dimensional reconstruction of CT images facilitated measurement of lung volume and density. There was a statistical significant correlation between body weight and lung volume (p < 0.0001). Lung density significantly decreased with an increase in body weight (p = 0.0078). However, no correlation was seen between these lung parameters and either sex or age of the dogs. In conclusion, this study shows that body weight is an important factor to consider when interpreting total lung volume and density values measured by quantitative CT. We highlight the need for further study using quantitative CT in identifying the potential effects of sex, age, and disease status on these parameters.
This study was performed to evaluate sedation with quantitative electroencephalography (EEG) analysis in dogs. EEG is used to evaluate objectively the effects of CNS acting with brain and behavioral changes. Especially, spectral edge frequency 95 (SEF 95) parameter is an effective method to determine the sedative status. The SEF 95 is the frequency below 95% of the total power. Twelve healthy intact male Miniature Schnauzer dogs, which did not show any neurological abnormalities and disease, were used for the study. EEG electrodes were inserted in subcutaneous tissue over the calvaria without entering adjacent muscles. The EEG data were acquired and analyzed by EEG raw wave and spectral edge frequency 95 analysis. After the administration of sedatives, the SEF 95 values were shown the significant changes compared with the normal state In all groups (p<0.05). It is suggested that SEF 95 analysis is useful method for assessing the state of sedation in dogs.
Eight dogs were presented with anal sacculitis with purulent exudates and/or open in the right or left anal sac. Patient dogs, ranging in size from 3-to-8 kg, were treated with closed anal sacculectomies, in which the balloon of a Foley catheter (No. 6, 1.5 ml) was used to facilitate surgical dissection of the sac. In all cases, the Foley catheter successfully distended the anal sac during its removal. Clinical signs associated with the diseased anal sac were abated In the all dogs for a follow-up period of one-to-three months. Anal sacculectomy is a good therapeutic option for cases of chronic anal sacculectomy or impaction. The use of a small Foley catheter to distend the anal sacs during surgery was easy, Inexpensive, and successful.
A 10-year-old castrated male Schnauzer (case 1) and a 13-year-old intact male Schnauzer (case 2) was referred with mass of left hind limb. We performed hemogram, serum chemistry, radiography, ultrasonography, computed tomography, fine needle aspiration and histopathology. The complete blood counts and serum biochemistry results were within the reference range. Radiography showed cutaneous mass with soft tissue density. The lesions of two dogs were revealed a definite marginated hyperechoic mass with vascularization in ultrasonography. Computed tomography showed an isodense mass in the left hind limb region with minimal contrast enhancing in case 1 and heterogenous enhancement in case 2. Cytology from ultrasonographic guided aspiration of the mass was suspected fibrous tissue-derived benign cell in two dogs. A surgical excision was performed in two dogs. In histological examination of the resected mass, cutaneous fibroma was revealed. The two patients were successfully treated by surgery and postoperative care. This report decribes and compares radiographic, ultrasonographic, computed tomographic, cytologic and histopathologic features of the cutaneous fibroma of two schnauzer dogs.
The objective of this study was to determine output power for skin incision in 0.3 mm spot diameter $CO_2$ laser by measuring (1) the wound depth, (2) initial dermal tissue damage, (3) degree of wound healing at different power (4W, 5W and 6W) in beagle dogs. Three healthy 2-year-old beagle dogs were used. Four 2 cm straight skin incisions were made with 0.3 mm spot diameter $CO_2$ laser on the each dog's both side of dorsal midline in three beagle dogs. The skin incisions were performed for $10{\sim}15$ seconds for same dosage. And then each wound was closed with surgical stapler. At 0, 3, 7 and 14 days after initial wounding, each wound was taken for histological observation. On macroscopic and microscopic observation, initial incisional wound did not show difference in three group. And also re-epithelialization, dermal tissue damage and inflammatory response did not show significant difference among groups. This study reveals that 4W, 5W and 6W may be suitable output power in 0.3 mm spot diameter $CO_2$ laser for the skin incision in beagle dogs.
The endodontic-periodontic combined lesions have been difficult to get correct diagnosis and predictable treatment. This study was to make the experimental endodontic-periodontic combined defects in dogs for the study of the periodontal regeneration and to evaluate the efficacy of the enamel matrix protein and e-PTFE membrane in the experimental endodontic-periodontic combined defects. 5 mongrel dogs were used. The pulp chambers were opened and the plaque was inserted into the chambers to induce the periapical lesions on the mandibular second, third and fourth premolars of the dogs. 1 month later, the root canal treatments were done with gutta perch a and ZOE sealer. On the day of surgery, the periapical defects were standardized by trephine bur. The buccal dehiscence defects were made by the dental bur and bone chisels. The apicoectomy with retrofilling was done. The prepared roots were randomly selected for test and control groups. In the experimental groups, the enamel matrix derivative and e-PTFE membrane were used. Nothing was placed on the control group. Fluroscent labelling was used to evaluate the bone formation. After 4 and 12 weeks, the dogs were sacrificed and undecalcified sections were prepared and stained with toluidine blue. Those histologic sections were examined by fluorescent microscopy and light microscopy. The results were as follows. 1. In the control group, new bone was formed in the periapical defects and scarcely in the buccal dehiscence defects. New cementum was not detected at 4 and 12 weeks. 2. In the experimental groups, new bone, new cementum and periodontal ligament were found in the periapical and buccal dehiscence defects. The relative amount and the quality of the new bone, new cementum and periodontal ligament tissue that had formed on the experimental groups were superior to those of the control group. 3. The current observation implicated that e-PTFE membrane and enamel matrix protein could be the effective tools for the guided tissue regeneration of the endo-perio combined defects.
This study was undertaken to identify differences between atopic and non-atopic dogs in three rapid screening immunodot assays as well as the ability of the assays to predict the results of intradermal skin testing (IDST) or Favrot diagnostic criteria (FDC). Twenty-nine dogs diagnosed with canine atopic dermatitis (CAD) were selected as the atopic group. Twenty-five dogs without CAD were included as the non-atopic group. Three types of immunodot assays were conducted on all serum samples from both groups: Allercept E-screen 2nd generation (ES2G), Canine Allergic Tendency Reference Test (ALERT), and Asan Easy Test Canine IgE (AETC). IDST, which included 39 allergens, and immunodot assays were performed concurrently in 13 dogs from the atopic group and compared. While there were no significant differences in positivity between the two groups in the evaluation of ALERT (P = 0.435) and AETC (P = 0.313), positivity in ES2G testing was significantly higher in the non-atopic group than the atopic group (P = 0.038). The ES2G, ALERT, and AETC results showed fair (${\kappa}=0.235$), slight (${\kappa}=0.133$), and slight (${\kappa}=0.014$) accordance with IDST, respectively. The outcomes of ES2G, ALERT, and AETC indicated poor (${\kappa}=-0.211$), slight (${\kappa}=0.106$), and slight (${\kappa}=0.087$) agreement with FDC. In conclusion, rapid screening immunodot assays were not useful for the diagnosis of CAD. These assays may provide a supplementary method for predicting the results of IDST in atopic dogs.

$Pyunkang-tang^{(R)}$ is a kind of herbal medicine and has been used for the treatment of atopy and allergic disease in humans over forty years. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the hematological, biochemical, and protein and lipid electrophoresis profiles after the oral administration of $Pyunkang-tang^{(R)}$ in healthy dogs. Fifteen clinically healthy beagle dogs were selected and orally administered either 33 ml of $Pyunkang-tang^{(R)}$ (group I, n = 5), 16.5 ml of $Pyunkang-tang^{(R)}$ (group II, n = 5), or 33 ml of distilled water (group III, n = 5) 3 times a day for 4 weeks. The results of the hematological, serum biochemical, and urine analysis did not differ significantly among the 3 groups. The oral administration of $Pyunkang-tang^{(R)}$ for 4 weeks was associated with significant changes in the serum globulin levels and an elevation in the high-density lipoprotein (HDL) concentrations in groups I and II (p < 0.05), compared to group III. The ${\alpha}1-globulin$ and ${\gamma}-globulin$ levels were significantly increased in group I, and the ${\alpha}1-globulin$ and ${\beta}-globulin$ levels were significantly increased in group II. The ${\alpha}2-globulin$ levels were significantly decreased in both groups. During the short-term evaluation of $Pyunkang-tang^{(R)}$ administration, we did not detect any specific adverse effects in the dogs. However, further evaluation of the safety and efficacy of $Pyunkang-tang^{(R)}$ for the treatment of atopic disease in dogs is needed.
This study evaluated the efficacy and safety to determine the therapeutic responses of oclacitinib in canine atopic dermatitis (CAD) and identified factors related to the therapeutic response. Overall, 13 dogs with CAD were treated with oclacitinib for 56 days. Owners and veterinarians assessed visual analog scale (VAS) scores of pruritus and dermatitis. The examined dogs were grouped according to treatment success and failure based on changes in the VAS scores. To identify factors related to the therapeutic responses of oclacitinib, signalments (breed, sex, age, and body weight), mean progression time of CAD, mean Owner and Veterinarian VAS scores at day 0, and preexisting infection rate were compared between the two groups. Among the 13 dogs, 7 (53.8%) met the criteria of treatment success. In the success group, the Owner VAS scores were significantly lower from day 6 to 56 compared with the score at day 0 (P < 0.05). Additionally, the Veterinarian VAS scores were significantly decreased at days 14 and 42 compared with the score at day 0 (P < 0.05). There were no changes in hematological indices after the administration of oclacitinib. The most common abnormality reported was otitis externa (30.8%), followed by pyoderma (23.1%), and vomiting (7.7%). Factors related to responses of oclacitinib were not identified. This study demonstrated that oclacitinib was safe and moderately effective in dogs with CAD. This is the first report of the clinical application of oclacitinib in South Korea.
