  • this paper describes a baseline for an implementation of a corpus-based Korean TTS system. The conventional TTS systems using small-sized speech still generate machine-like synthetic speech. To overcome this problem we introduce the corpus-based TTS system which enables to generate natural synthetic speech without prosodic modifications. The corpus should be composed of a natural prosody of source speech and multiple instances of synthesis units. To make a phone level synthesis unit, we train a speech recognizer with the target speech, and then perform an automatic phoneme segmentation. We also detect the fine pitch period using Laryngo graph signals, which is used for prosodic feature extraction. For break strength allocation, 4 levels of break indices are decided as pause length and also attached to phones to reflect prosodic variations in phrase boundaries. To predict the break strength on texts, we utilize the statistical information of POS (Part-of-Speech) sequences. The best triphone sequences are selected by Viterbi search considering the minimization of accumulative Euclidean distance of concatenating distortion. To get high quality synthesis speech applicable to commercial purpose, we introduce a domain specific database. By adding domain specific database to general domain database, we can greatly improve the quality of synthetic speech on specific domain. From the subjective evaluation, the new Korean corpus-based TTS system shows better naturalness than the conventional demisyllable-based one.

  • Recently we witnessed a few scandals on plagiarism among academic paper and novels. Plagiarism on documents is getting worse more frequently. Although plagiarism on English had been studied so long time, we hardly find the systematic and complete studies on plagiarisms in Korean documents. Since the linguistic features of Korean are quite different from those of English, we cannot apply the English-based method to Korean documents directly. In this paper, we propose a new plagiarism detecting method for Korean, and we throughly tested our algorithm with one benchmark Korean text corpus. The proposed method is based on "k-mer" and "local alignment" which locates the region of plagiarized document pairs fast and accurately. Using a Korean corpus which contains more than 10 million words, we establish a probability model (or local alignment score (random similarity by chance). The experiment has shown that our system was quite successful to detect the plagiarized documents.

  • This study was designed to elucidate high-$K^+$ induced response of circular and longitudinal smooth muscle from human gastric corpus using isometric contraction. Contraction from circular and longitudinal muscle stripes of gastric corpus greater curvature and lesser curvature were compared. Circular smooth muscle from corpus greater curvature showed high $K^+$ (50 mM)-induced tonic contraction. On the contrary, however, longitudinal smooth muscle strips showed high $K^+$ (50 mM)-induced sustained relaxation. To find out the reason for the discrepancy we tested several relaxation mechanisms. Protein kinase blockers like KT5720, PKA inhibitor, and KT5823, PKG inhibitor, did not affect high $K^+$-induced relaxation. $K^+$ channel blockers like tetraethylammonium (TEA), apamin (APA), glibenclamide (Glib) and barium ($Ba^{2+}$) also had no effect. However, N(G)-nitro-L-arginine (L-NNA) and 1H-(1,2,4) oxadiazolo (4,3-A) quinoxalin-1-one (ODQ), an inhibitor of soluble guanylate cyclase (sGC) and 4-AP (4-aminopyridine), voltage-dependent $K^+$ channel (KV) blocker, inhibited high $K^+$ -induced relaxation, hence reversing to tonic contraction. High $K^+$-induced relaxation was observed in gastric corpus of human stomach, but only in the longitudinal muscles from greater curvature not lesser curvature. L-NNA, ODQ and KV channel blocker sensitive high $K^+$-induced relaxation in longitudinal muscle of higher portion of corpus was also observed. These results suggest that longitudinal smooth muscle from greater curvature of gastric corpus produced high $K^+$-induced relaxation which was activated by NO/sGC pathway and by $K_V$ channel dependent mechanism.

  • This study was conducted to investigate total protein, DNA, and RNA content in corpus luteum(CL) without and with central cavity in dairy cow. Stage of the estrous cycle of corpus luteum from slaughterhouse(CL3, days 11 to 17) was classified by method of Ireland et. al.(1980). Corpus luteum was classified into corpus luteum without(less than 2mm in diameter) and with central cavity(more than 2mm in diameter) by method of Kastelic et. al.(1990). 1 In total protein content, CL with central cavity did not differ from CL without central cavity. 2. In DNA content, CL with central cavity was significantly lower than CL without central cavity(p<0.05). 3. In protein: DNA ratios, CL with central cavity was significantly lower than CL without central cavity(p<0.05). 4. But in RNA content, protein:RNA and RNA:DNA ratios, CL with central cavity did not differ from CL without central cavity.

  • Sympathomimetic amines, especially ephedrine, are a major ingredient in proprietary medications for symptomatic treatment of upper respiratory infections. Their frequent uses can lead to occasional instances of abuse and habituation. The clinical symptoms of ephedrine abuse are similar to that of amphetamine psychosis and resemble closely that of schizophrenia. Because both amphetamine psychosis and schizophrenia are thought to be mediated primarily through the action on catecholamines, ephedrine-induced changes of the biogenic amines can be suspected. However, there were few studies about the central effects of ephedrine because of the milder central action than peripheral. Therefore, the present investigation was undertaken to elucidate the relations between the effects of single or repeated administration of ephedrine on the regional levels of biogenic amines in rat brain and ephedrine-induced CNS stimulation. The male Sprague-Dawley rats weighing $100{\sim}200\;g$ were used. After single or repeated administrations of ephedrine, blocks of tissue were obtained from frontal cortex, corpus striatum, hippocampus, thalamus, hypothalamus, substantia nigra and cerebellum. The concentration of biogenic amines(norepinephrine, epinephrine, dopamine, 5-hydroxytryptamine(5-HT)) and their metabolites (3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid (DOPAC), homovanillic acid(HVA), 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid(5-HIAA)) were measured by means of high performance liquid chromatography-electrochemical detector(HPLC-ECD). The results obtained were as follows: 1) In the normal rat, the concentration of norepinephrine was the highest in hypothalamus. Dopamine, DOPAC and HVA were highest in corpus striatum, and 5-HT and 5-HIAA were highest in substantia nigra. Epinephrine was not detectable in any part of the brain tissue. 2) In a single administration of ephedrine, the concentration of DOPAC was decreased in corpus striatum. However, the other biogenic amines and their metabolites were not changed. 3) In repeated administration of ephedrine, the concentration of norepinephrine was decreased in all brain region checked. Dopamine was decreased in corpus striatum and substantia nigra and, increased in hypothalamus, and HVA was decreased in corpus striatum. 5-HT was decreased in all brain region except cerebellum and, 5-HIAA was decreased only in frontal cortex. The ratio of 5-HIAA/5-HT was increased in corpus striatum, thalamus, hypothalamus and substantia nigra. These data indicated that, although a single administration of ephedrine did not change the central neurotransmitters, repeated administration of ephedrine caused the decreases of norepinephrine and 5-HT in the most regions of brain, which may be responsible for the emergence of abnormal behavioral effect after ephedrine abuse.

  • This study aimed to investigate the relaxation effects and its underlying mechanisms of Epimedium koreanum Nakai(EK) in phenylephrine(PE) treated isolated rabbit corpus cavernosum smooth muscle. The dose-dependent relaxation responses of phenylephrine(PE, $1{\times}10^{-6}M$)-precontracted strips to EK at $0.01-3.0mg/m{\ell}$ were measured and also observed after endothelial denudation using organ bath. To analyze the underlying mechanisms of EK-induced relaxation, $N{\omega}$-nitro-L-arginine(L-NNA), methylene blue(MB), tetraethylammonium chloride(TEA), indomethacin(IM) were pretreated before EK extract infused into precontracted strips induced by PE. To investigate cytotoxic activity and nitric oxide(NO) concentration of EK extract on EA.hy926 cells, mitochondrial dehydrogenase activity(MTT) assay and nitric oxide detection kit were used. The cavernous strips were significantly relaxed by EK extract at $0.3mg/m{\ell}$, $1.0mg/m{\ell}$, $3.0mg/m{\ell}$ and the relaxation responses of PE-precontracted strips denuded endothelium also inhibited in comparison with intact endothelium. The pretreatment of L-NNA, MB, TEA reduced EK extract-induced endothelium-dependent relaxation, but the pretreatment of IM didn't affect EK extract-induced endothelium-dependent relaxation. When EK extract was applicated on EA.hy926 cells, the NO concentration was increased. Our findings have shown that EK extract exerts a relaxing effect on corpus cavernosum in part by suppressing influx of extracellular $Ca^{2+}$ through activating the NO-cGMP system.

  • Spoken dialog system development includes many laborious and inefficient tasks. Since there are many components such as speech recognition, language understanding, dialog management and knowledge management in a spoken dialog system, a developer should take an effort to edit corpus and train each model separately. To reduce a cost for editing corpus and training each model, we need more systematic and efficient working environment. For the working environment, we propose DialogStudio as a spoken dialog system workbench.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the relaxation effects and its mechanisms of Nelumbinis Semen(NS) extract in isolated rabbit corpus cavernous tissues. In order to examine the relaxation effects and its mechanisms of NS, we treated the ethanol extract of NS(0.01-3.0 mg/ml) and indomethacin(IM), tetraethylammonium chloride(TEA), Nω -nitro-L-arginine (L-NNA), methylene blue(MB) were treated before NS extract to contracted strips induced by PE 1 μM. We also treated calcium chloride(Ca) 1 mM after pretreatment of NS extract in Ca2+-free krebs-ringer solution to contracted strips induced by PE. Cell viability and NO concentration on human umbilical vein endothelial cell(HUVEC) was measured by MTT assay, Griess reagent system. eNOS production was investigated by histochemical and immunohistochemical staining. NS extract was significantly affected on the relaxation of cavernous strips and NS extract-induced relaxation was not different by pretreatment of IM, TEA, MB, but inhibited by the pretreatment of L-NNA. And increase of contraction induced by Ca2+ addition, in a Ca2+-free solution, was decreased by pretreatment of NS. NO concentration on HUVEC was increased. When NS extract was applicated on corpus cavernosum of penis(CCP) in SHR, ratio of smooth muscles to collage fibers by PE was decreased and formation of eNOS around helicine artery was increased. These results suggest that CCP relaxation effects of NS extract are shown by suppressing influx of extracellular Ca2+ through the production of NO and eNOS.

  • A set of bilingual terms is one of the most important factors in building language-related applications such as a machine translation system and a cross-lingual information system. In this paper, we introduce a new approach that automatically extracts candidates of English-Korean bilingual terms by using a bilingual parallel corpus and a basic English-Korean lexicon. This approach can be useful even though the size of the parallel corpus is small. A sentence alignment is achieved first for the document-level parallel corpus. We can align words between a pair of aligned sentences by referencing a basic bilingual lexicon. For unaligned words between a pair of aligned sentences, several assumptions are applied in order to align bilingual term candidates of two languages. A location of a sentence, a relation between words, and linguistic information between two languages are examples of the assumptions. An experimental result shows approximately 71.7% accuracy for the English-Korean bilingual term candidates which are automatically extracted from 1,000 bilingual parallel corpus.
