  • This experiment was conducted to evaluate the growth characteristics and productivity of silage corn varieties developed in Korea. Corn cultivation was carried out using the experimental field in the Pyeongchang campus of Seoul National University (550 m above sea level). There have 10 domestic cultivars (Gwangpyeongok, Dacheongok, Yanganok, Jangdaok, Cheongdaok, Daanok, Sinhwangok, Sinhwangok II, Pyeonggangok, and Hwangdaok) with one imported cultivar (P1543) which tested as a control, and randomized block design with three replications. Among the 100-grains weight of the seeds, Dacheongok was the heaviest, and the germination rate for each variety was 74.6% on average, while that of Daanok and Sinhwangok were over 90%. Sinhwangok was the fastest in tasseling and silking date. The number of days required to be silking date was as slow as 85 days in Dacheongok, Cheongdaok and Pyeonggangok, and as fast as 80 days or less in Sinhwangok, Sinhwangok II and Hwangdaok. The plant height of P1543 was the highest as 344cm, and Hwangdaok and Daanok were short. In terms of the ratio of ears, Daanok had the highest rate of 60.18%, and Jangdaok and Dacheongok had the lowest. There was no significant difference in dry matter content in stover, but P1543 was generally higher in ear and total dry matter content. The dry matter yield was highest in P1543, and the yield of TDN was significantly higher in P1543 and Yanganok. There was a significant difference in the crude protein content of ears and the dry digestibility of stems (p<0.05), while there was no significant difference in the content of each part or element. Combining the above results, Yanganok was the highest in terms of yield, and Dacheongok, Sinhwangok and Pyeonggangok were also recommended for domestically grown corn varieties in the mountainous regions of Gangwon-do.

  • In order to investigate the effect of sowing dates on some agronomical characters and yield of corn in southern part of Korea. a field experiment was carried out at Gyeongnam Provincial Livestock Breeding Station in chinju. Single cross hybrid corn (cv. Suwon #19) was sown from April 13 to June 2 with five-day interval in 1984 and 1984. The relationship between herbage and grain yield and various meterological measurements was evaluated. As the sowing dates were delayed. the days from sowing to seedling emergence were shortened, as more closely affected by the soil temperature at seedling emergence. growth period and was dependent on precipitation and temperature during the growth period. Based on the relationship between herbege dry matter yield of corn and soil temperature at seedling emergence, the estimated critical sowing date for corn in the southern Korea was March 23${\pm}$3.6 days.

  • The changes of kernel size, contents of moisture and total sugar, and rates of flavor and stickiness of a waxy corn (cv. Hongcheon native) were observed from 15 days after silking (DAS) to 40 DAS at Suwon and Cheongju in 1984, nespectively. Fresh kernel length and width greatly increased from 15 DAS to 30 DAS and slightly increased thereafter. Fresh 100-kernel weight was markedly increased during 15 DAS to 30 DAS, and slightly and continuously increased thereafter while dry 100-kernel weight almost linearly increased with maturity. Total sugar content of fresh kernel was the highest at 20 DAS and then continuously decreased with maturity. Flavor and stickiness rates of boiled waxy corn were significantly increased during 15 DAS to 30 DAS and flavor rate decreased thereafter. However, stickiness rate maintained the level until 35 DAS and then decreased slightly. The optimum harvest date for fresh waxy corn seems to be about 30 DAS considering kernel size, and flavor and stickiness rates of boiled corn.

  • The yield characteristics of corn for feed by sowing period and the crude protein, crude fat, and coarse flour contents of grain in the harvesting period were compared. The varieties are Kwangpyeongok(KPO), Dapyeongok(DPO) and Pyeonggangok(PGO), and cultivation was tested by the National Food Engineering Department and the Central Crop Department. It was sown at a planting distance of 70×25cm on April 15, June 14, and July 15, 2021, and the amount of fertilizer was applied through soil inspection. For the growth characteristics, plant height, biomass and grain weight were investigated after 50 days of sowing, and general components were analyzed by drying and pulverizing each seed. Compared to the results of sowing in April, which is the right time to sow corn, all three varieties sown on June 14 showed an increase in biomass. In the case of sowing on July 15, the fresh weight of KPO and DPO decreased, and the grain weight of KPO and PGO decreased by 10-20% compared to the sowing in April. There was no significant difference in the crude protein content of grain according to the sowing seasons in April and June, but decreased in the corn sown in July. The crude fat content was highest in KPO sown on June 14 and DPO sown on July 15. Combining the yield and general composition results, it is thought that the cultivation of corn for feed in Suwon in the central part can be sown by mid-June.

  • Effects of addition of soil ameliorants on the growth and nutrient absorption of Zea mays, Miscanthus sinensis and Phytolacca americana were investigated. Acid soil from Yeocheon Industrial Complex were used for the control plot (AS). We made two treatment plots, acid soil + lime (AS + L) and acid soil + dolomite (AS+D). Ration of acid soil : soil ameliorants in freatment plot was 50 : 1(V:V). Acid soil and soil ameliorants were mixed thoroughly before use. Shoot length of corn in AS+L and AS+D was considerably increased by 141% and 137%, respectively, compared with that in AS. Pokeweed in AS+L and AS+D also increased by 183% and 152%, respectively, compared with that in AS. However, growth of Miscanthus sinensis showed slight difference between the control and the treatment plots. Biomass of corn and porkweed in the treatment plots were also greater than those in the control plots. During the growth experiment with corn, concentrations of Ca and Mg in soil were increased and A1 decreased with increased soil pH in the treatment plots. Amount of aluminum absorbed by corn in the control plot was greater than that in the treatment plots. In case of Miscanthus sinensis, however, aluminum absorption in the control plot was lower than those in the treatment plots.

  • The effects of sardine oil(high in eicosapentaenoic acid : EPA) and tuna oil(high in docosahexaenoic acid : DHA, also high in EPA) on fatty acid composition of brain and learning ability were evaluated in male weanling Sprague-Dawley rats and compared with the effects of corn oil and beef tallow. Animals assigned by randomized block design to one of the four experimental diet groups containing dietary lipid at 15%(w/w) level were given ad libitum for 7 weeks. Food intake and body weight gain of the fish oil groups were significantly lower than those of the corn oil and beef tallow groups. However, brain weights of the groups were not significantly different. In the brain fatty acid composition, the corn oil group showed high concentrations of n-6 fatty acids, the fish oil groups of n-3 fatty acids, and the beef tallow group of saturated fatty acids. Brain EPA and DHA contents of the fish oil groups showed significantly higher than the other groups while the brain ratio of saturated/monounsaturated/polyunsaturated fatty acid was controlled in a narrow range. In a maze test, the fish oil groups appeared to arrive at the goal faster than the corn oil and beef tallow groups. It explained that EPA in diets might efficiently convert to DHA resulting in DHA accumulation in brain tissue and might increase the learning performance as DHA did.

  • Biodiesels are being explored as a clean energy alternative to regular diesel, which causes pollution. In this study, the optimum conditions for producing biodiesel (BD) by combining beef tallow, an animal waste resource with a high saturated fatty acid content, and corn oil, a vegetable oil with a high unsaturated fatty acid content, were investigated, and the fuel properties were analyzed. Furthermore, Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) was used to verify the optimum conditions for producing biodiesel. The influences of control factors, such as the oil blend ratio and methanol to oil molar ratio, on the fatty acid methyl ester and biodiesel production yield were investigated. As a result, the optimum condition for producing blended biodiesel was verified to be tallow to corn oil blend ratio of 7 : 3 (TACO7) and a methanol to oil molar ratio of 14 : 1. Moreover, the interaction between the oil blend ratio and the methanol to oil molar ratio has the most crucial effects on the production of oil blended biodiesel. In conclusion, the analysis results of the fuel properties of TACO7 BD satisfied the BD quality standard, and thus, the viability of BD blended with waste tallow as fuel was verified.

  • This study was conducted to estimate the cultural characteristics, the production of antibiotic, and the selection of optimal media for mass culture of Bacillus licheniformis N1 isolate which was previously reported as an antagonistic bacterium to Botrytis cinerea. We investigated initial pH, temperatures and shaking speed for good cultural conditions and antibiotics production by N1 isolate. According to the results, the optimal conditions of initial pH, temperatures, and shaking speed were determined to be pH 5.0~5.5, 30~35$^{\circ}C$ and 250 rpm, respectively. Also, the optimal conditions for the antagonism by N1 isolate highly appeared in the initial pH as 5.0, and the mycelial growth inhibition was high when the substances used such as glucose or corn starch as carbon sources, and biji(soybean curd residue) flour as a nitrogen source. Furthermore, inhibitory area was significantly expanded, when 3% or 5% of corn starch was added into 5% of Biji flour as nitrogen source, were respectivley selected for mass culture of N1 isolate. Among them, 5% Biji flour medium showed higher cell density more than 10 times that in NB medium after 48 hour incubation. Therefore, the optimal medium was determined as 5% biji flour added 3~5% of corn starch for high density of cells.

  • This study was carried out to compare the productivity and to evaluate the stability for the introduced sweet corn hybrids; Sunnychocolat, 7168Y and Gammiok as a check hybrids. The used materials were planted at Anseong and Daejeon by randomized block design with 3 replications on 21 April, 2013. In productivity of the used hybrid corns, plant and ear height showed comparatively stable as a 183.5 cm to 226.5 cm and 45.8 cm to 80.9 cm, respectively. In yield per 10a, number of ears was higher in Sunnychocolat than check, while Gammiok was very poor in kernel setting length and marketability. Beside, stability of the used hybrids also showed highly in the introduced hybrids than check in the ratio of ear to plant height, tolerance to environmental stress and low lodging. As results above, we thought that these introduced hybrids will be well adapted in domestic cultivation and growth habit as like other hybrid corns.

  • The study was designed to observe the effect of different dietary fats on the incidence of colorectal tumor and in vivo cell proliferation in colon carcinogenesis. Male Sprague Dawley rats were intrarectally infused with chemical carcinogen(methylnitrosourea, MNU) and fed 16%(w/w) fat diet containing one of dietary fats(beef tallow, corn oil, perilla oil) for 30 weeks. To measure in vivo cell proliferation, the incorporation of 5-bromo-2-deoxyuridine(BrdU) into DNA was localized using the monoclonal anti-BrdU antibody. Large number of tumors were found in the distal colon and tumor incidence was increased in the order of perilla oil(57.7%)$\alpha$-linolenic acid rich in perilla oil could have a protective effect against colon cancer compared to saturated fatty acid or n-6 linoleic acid.
