The objective of this study was to prove the effect of pig slurry application with charcoal on nitrogen use efficiency (NUE), feed value and ammonia (NH3) emission from maize forage. The four treatments were applied: 1) non-pig slurry (only water as a control), 2) only pig slurry application (PS), 3) pig slurry application with large particle charcoal (LC), 4) pig slurry application with small particle charcoal (SC). The pig slurry was applied at a rate of 150 kg N ha-1, and the charcoal was applied at a rate of 300 kg ha-1 regardless of the size. To determine the feed value of maize, crude protein, dry matter intake, digestible dry matter, total digestible nutrient, and relative feed value were investigated. All feed value was increased by charcoal treatment compared to water and PS treatment. Also, the NUE for plant N was significantly higher in charcoal treatments (LC and SC) compared to PS treatment. On the other hand, there is no significant difference for feed value and NUE between LC and SC. The NH3 emission was significantly reduced 15.2% and 27.9% by LC and SC, respectively, compared to PS. Especially, SC significantly decreased NH3 emission by 15% compared to LC. The present study clearly showed that charcoal application exhibited positive potential in nitrogen use efficiency, feed value and reducing N losses through NH3 emission.
Anatomical characteristics of black and white charcoal of Quercus variabilis and Quercus mongolica manufactured by a Korean traditional kiln were investigated by scanning electron microscopy. In both charcoal, the earlywood vessels shrank in tangential direction, whereas the other cells didn't change. However, in the case of latewood vessels, black charcoal did not show tangential direction shrinkage, but white charcoal did. The wood fiber were changed severly in shape due to the excessive shrinkage. Tyloses in early wood vessel were still shown unchanged shape in both charcoals. Cell wall of ray parenchyma was observed and their shapes were severly distorted. Voids between ray parenchyma were observed in white charcoal, which maybe due to high temperature in white charcoal. Moreover, lumen diameters in the uniseriate ray and multiseriate ray were decreased at the high charring temperature. These results showed that the low charcoal yield of the white charcoal compared to the black charcoal was caused by decrease of cell dimensions as well as loss of wood components associated with the carbonization temperature.

The aims of this study are to find out the possibility of the charcoal as a desiccant. The only humidity control under high temperature and high humidity environment can be provided to the thermal comfort at indoor environment. Functionality of charcoal is known to be deodorization, antiseptic effect, filtering effect and humidity control. But research related to humidity control in the country not yet. Thus, the dehumidification capacity of the charcoal experimental results to see the results were as follows : 1) Entering the experimental humidification is 148.02 g/h, 161.05 g/h and 243.2 g/h when air velocity was changed 1.5 m/s, 1.7 m/s and 2.0 m/s. 2) When the basis weight of the charcoal 2.0 m/s air velocity to obtain the largest number of adsorption capacity. 3) Dru bulb temperature and dew point temperature ware measured at front and rear of the charcoal. Absolute humidity is calculated from the measured Dry bulb temperature and dew point temperature. The quantity of dehumidification is calculated from absolute humidity is the largest 129.6 g/h at the air velocity 2.0 m/s.
To evaluate wood charcoal as raw material for mineral water production, dissolution of inorganic ions from charcoal to water, pH and adsorption ability of chlorine in water were investigated as main variables. More potassium ion was dissolved in water as higher temperature manufactured charcoal but other ions showed no difference with different charcoal making temperatures. Highest dissolved cation was potassium followed by calcium and sodium. Among wood species, charcoal from Quercus variabilis and Platanus occidentalis showed significantly higher potassium content in water than that of larch, red pine and white pine. Other cations had similar pattern to the potassium but their difference was not apparent as much as potassium. pH value of water treated with charcoal was higher for wood charcoals from Platanus occidentalis (pH 8.5) and Quercus variabilis (pH 8.4) which contained higher inorganic cations. In chlorine removal in water by charcoal, all wood charcoals showed greater chlorine removal than that of the control, but softwood charcoals resulted in higher removal than those of hardwoods. There was no significant difference in the dissolution of cations and pHs between particle charcoal and whole charcoal. With easy of control, whole charcoal is better for mineral water making raw material than particle charcoal does.
The objective of this study was to investigate potential usage of environmentally friendly building materials, liquid mortar and dry cement mortar mixed with charcoal, based on the test of their physical and chemical properties. From the test results of physical and chemical properties of the liquid mortar mixed with charcoal, liquid mortar containing over 20% of charcoal, the consistency viscosity and the non-volatile content met a standard requirement. Drying time was delayed with increase in charcoal contents in the liquid mortar, however they were fully cured within 60 minutes in all treated levels. Other properties were acceptable at standard requirement. From the results, it was found that the proper charcoal addition level to the liquid mortar was 25%. In the results on dry cement, it was found that samples containing 5% of charcoal showed the maximum compressive strength, whereas samples containing over 20% of charcoal did not reach the minimum requirement of KS standard. Water retention ability constantly increased as the charcoal ratio increased. The conventional dry cement mortar adsorbed 59.5% of it, in the test of adsorption rate on ammonia gas, whereas cement mortar containing 10% of charcoal showed 71.6% of ammonia gas adsorption.
Activated charcoal(AC) is generally used in plant tissue culture. Its addition to plant tissue culture was known to many advantages and disadvantages. We investigate that sucrose hydrolysis, which by autoclaving with or without activated charcoal on different intitial pH and sucrose concentration and that the effect of activated charcoal on plant tissue culture.

Exhaust gas containing wood tar of high concentration is discharged from charcoal production kilns. The large amount of emissions are often found by operational failure. The purpose of this study is to investigate the performance of an integrated treatment system in treating charcoal production exhaust. The system, which combined a tar collection device and a post-combustion unit, was proposed to remove moisture, wood tar, particulate matter, and other gas-phase pollutants (CO, $CH_4$, total hydrogen carbons) from exhaust gases. Heat recovery units were also applied in the system to utilize waste heat.
Indoor air quality is a very important environmental factor in modern society. However, air pollutants generated from various interior construction materials significantly affect the human body, including formaldehyde (HCHO) and volatile organic compounds that threaten public health by deteriorating indoor air quality. Effective in removing these harmful substances are porous materials, such as woodceramics. In this study, charcoal, a porous material, was added to rice husk, an agricultural by-product, and sawdust generated during the sawing process to prepare boards and ceramics at different mixing ratios, and the HCHO deodorization performance and far-infrared emission characteristics were measured. As the mixing ratio of charcoal increased, the deodorization rate of the boards and ceramics tended to increase. Overall, the deodorization rate was measured to be 80% to 90%, indicating that the boards and ceramics prepared with charcoal are suitable to be used for the purpose of deodorization. The effect of the material mixing ratio on far-infrared emissivity and emission power was insignificant.
Carbonization characteristics of Indonesian bamboos were investigated using lab-scale tube furnace, in order to find optimum design temperature of a carbonizer for producing bamboo charcoal and vinegar. The bamboo samples used in this study are local bamboos from Damyang in Korea, Andong and Petung in Indonesia. Correlation of electric resistance, specific surface area and pH of bamboo vinegar with pyrolysis temperature has been investigated. Electric resistance of the charcoal increased for higher pyrolysis temperature the specific surface area was also increased as carbonization temperature got higher. Charcoal which has specific surface area of over $300\;m^2/g$ could be produced at $700^{\circ}C$. pH of bamboo vinegar was decreased for highter carbonization temperature and vinegar under pH 3 could be produced for all bamboo samples. In this experimental condition, it was found that lower carbonization temperature is better for producing bamboo vinegar of high quality, while higher temperature is better for obtaining bamboo charcoal with larger surface.
This study was carried out to examine the effect of soil improvement according to the shape of charcoal and the kind of carbonized tree species. As the results, all of the seedlings of Thuja occidentalis and Aesculus turbinata grew better in the charcoal-treated soil than the non-treated soil. In case of powder charcoal, Thuja occidentalis seedlings grew up best in the soil treated with powder charcoal of Pinus koraiensis and then grew well in order of Larix leptolepis > particle board > Quercus acutissima. In case of granulated charcoal, the seedlings grew well in order of the granulated charcoal of Larix leptolepis > particle board > Pinus koraiensis. It was analyzed that the soil porosity and the organic matter content were mo re in the charcoal -treated soil than the non-treated soil also. It is inferred that because the aeration property and the absorption of organic matter were increased in the root zone, the growth of seedlings was better in the char-coal-treated soil.
