  • In this study, cherry kernel shell pyrolytic charcoal was synthesized (CKSC) and composite beads were obtained by blending this pyrolytic charcoal with chitosan and Fe2O3 nanoparticles (Fe-C-CKSC). Cr(VI) adsorption from aqueous solutions by Fe-C-CKSC composite beads and CKSC adsorbents was studied comparatively. The effects of Cr(VI) initial concentration, adsorbent dosage, contact time, pH and temperature parameters on Cr(VI) adsorption were investigated. Adsorption reached an equilibrium point within 120 min for CKSC and Fe-C-CKSC adsorbents. The maximum Cr(VI) removal was obtained at the initial pH value of 1.56 for CKSC and 2.00 for Fe-C-CKSC. The optimum adsorbent dosage was found to be 5 g/L for CKSC and 3 g/L for Fe-C-CKSC. Based on the Langmuir model, the maximum adsorption capacities were calculated as 14.455 mg/g and 47.576 mg/g for CKSC and Fe-C-CKSC, respectively. Thermodynamic and kinetic studies were performed. As a result of adsorption kinetics calculations, adsorption was found to be consistent with the pseudo second order kinetic model. Characterization of the synthesized adsorbents was performed by SEM, BET, FTIR and elemental analysis. This study has shown that low cost adsorbents CKSC and Fe-C-CKSC can be used in Cr(VI) removal from aqueous solutions.

  • A comparative study on the structure of wood and charcoals was examined by scanning electron microscopy. Four species as Quercus variabilis $B_LUME$, Quercus mongozica $F_ISCH$ , Fraxinus rhynchcphylla $H_ANCE$ and Prunus sargentii $R_EHDER$ were used for this experiment. Cell dimensions of charcoals showed more higher shrinkage than those of wood. Shape of vessels was slightly changed due to become smaller in tangential diameter. Therefore, it was considered that the decrease of charcoal yield was caused by decrease of cell dimensions as well as loss of wood components.

  • Plants regenerated from in vitro cultures carry chromosomal variations, especially in long-term culture. Reducing the duration of plant tissue culture is one of the ways to reduce genetic and epigenetic changes. In this study, we reduced the duration of long-term culture and repeat subculture using small bulblets derived from bulb scales in two lily cultivars. The adventitious bulblets derived from bulb-scale tissue were cultured on three different media containing Murashige and Skoog (MS) basal medium supplemented with 1 g/L Charcoal, MS medium containing 0.3 mg/L IAA and 0.4 mg/L BA hormone with or without Charcoal, respectively. About seven weeks later, the number of newly propagated multiple shoots in the two media, A and B media, showed little differentiation. Compared to both media, the number of propagated multiple shoots increased 5-fold in MS medium containing 0.3 mg/L IAA and 0.4 mg/L BA hormone without Charcoal (C medium). The number of propagated multiple shoots ranged from 5 to 6 and 4 to 6 with an average of 5 in TropicalPink and GreenStar cultivars, respectively. The flow cytometric measurements indicated no variation in the ploidy level between control and in vitro propagated plants.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of the addition of activated charcoal (AC) and oak charcoal on in vitro ruminal fermentation characteristics, nutrient disappearance, and ruminal gas production. AC and oak charcoal were added at the levels of 0.50, and 1.00 % to experimental diet (roughage/concentrate ratio ; 2/8). Ruminal pH and ammonia-N tended to increase by adding AC(P<0.05). But oak charcoal did not affect the ruminal pH and ammonia-N. Although not significant, ruminal total VFA and molar percentage of butyric acid tended to decrease in AC diets. but molar percentage of acetate and propionate were not affected by adding AC. Ruminal degradation of dry matter, crude protein, NDF, and ADF in AC diets tended to increase than in non-AC diet, however, no tendency in ruminal degradation of hemicellulose was observed. Ruminal gas production tended to increase in the AC and oak charcoal diets(P<0.05). Although there appeared some beneficial effects in adding AC to ruminant diets in this study, more works should be done with AC before we can make clear conclusion on the use of AC in the ruminant diets.

  • Biomass bamboo charcoal is utilized as anode for lithium-ion battery in an effort to find an alternative to conventional resources such as cokes and petroleum pitches. The amorphous phase of the bamboo charcoal is partially converted to graphite through a low temperature graphitization process with iron oxide nanoparticle catalyst impregnated into the bamboo charcoal. An optimum catalysis amount for the graphitization is determined based on the characterization results of TEM, Raman spectroscopy, and XRD. It is found that the graphitization occurs surrounding the surface of the catalysis, and large pores are formed after the removal of the catalysis. The formation of the large pores increases the pore volume and, as a result, reduces the surface area of the graphitized bamboo charcoal. The partial graphitization of the pristine bamboo charcoal improves the discharge capacity and coulombic efficiency compared to the pristine counterpart. However, the discharge capacity of the graphitized charcoal at elevated current density is decreased due to the reduced surface area. These results indicate that the size of the catalysis formed in in-situ graphitization is a critical parameter to determine the battery performance and thus should be tuned as small as one of the pristine charcoal to retain the surface area and eventually improve the discharge capacity at high current density.

  • Effects of supplemental charcoal powder and vitamin A on physico-chemical properties in 24 Hanwoo steers were investigated. The Hanwoo steers were randomly assigned to one of the three dietary treatments : 1) Control (commercial feed) 2) T1 (commercial feed supplemented with 2% charcoal powder and 0.2% vitamin A) 3) T2 (commercial feed with 2% charcoal powder). Crude fat content of proximate chemical composition in longissimus muscle was increased at control but moisture of control was rather lower than that of treatment groups (p<0.05). The WHC (water holding capacity) in longissimus muscle was tended to increase in control and shear force was higher in T2 (p<0.05). However, effects of diets charcoal power and vitamin A on pH were not found (p>0.05). Tenderness and flavor of sensory evaluation was improved significantly in control with peculiar and savory taste of Hanwoo being more emphasized. But Juiciness were not difference by treatments. When Hanwoo steers were fed with dietary charcoal powder and vitamin A, the palmitoleic acid and linoleic acid contents were higher compared with that of control (p<0.05), but oleic acid was higher in control than others.

  • This study was performed to evaluate the effect of organic medicinal charcoal as a feed additive on aflatoxin absorption, odor emission, fecal microflora and in vitro digestibility in pig diet. A 10-day trial was conducted with 20 [(Yorkshire ${\times}$ Landrace) ${\times}$ Duroc] finishing pigs ($BW=81{\pm}3.3kg$) to investigate the population of Lactobacillus and E. coli in feces and fecal odor ($NH_3$, $H_2S$, total mercaptans, and Acetic acid) in vivo. The in vitro and in vivo treatments included: control (basal diet; CON); (basal diet + 0.25% Organic Medicinal Charcoal; OMC); (basal diet + 0.50% Pyroligneous Charcoal; PC); and (basal diet + 0.50% Coconut tree Charcoal; CC). The aflatoxin absorption capacity was 100, 10, and 20% in OMC, PC, and CC, respectively. The digestibility of dry matter in OMC was significantly higher than that of CON, PC, or CC in vitro (p < 0.05). The digestibility of organic matter in OMC was found to be significantly different from that of CON (p < 0.05). Fecal ammonia and $H_2S$ emissions of OMC were observed to be significantly lower than those of CON, PC, and CC (p < 0.05). Lactobacillus counts in feces of OMC and CC were significantly higher than those of CON and PC (p < 0.05). Fecal E. coli counts of OMC and CC were lower than those of CON and PC (p < 0.05). It was concluded that organic medicinal charcoal can be used as a feed additive in pig diets because it improves the digestibility of feed and fecal odor, and has positive effects on the population of microorganism in feces.

  • Three different aged Chinese bamboo (Phyllostachys pubescense; 3, 5, and 7 years) was carbonized using three different types of kilns (special, improved and simple kiln) and their physicochemical charcoal properties were investigated. The fixed carbon of the bamboo charcoal prepared from the special kiln (800 - $1,000^{\circ}C$) tended to be decreased, while the specific surface area tended to be increased, according to the increase of bamboo ages. The bamboo charcoal prepared from the 5-year-aged showed the highest value in iodine value. In the improved kiln (600 - $700^{\circ}C$), the specific surface area and the iodine value increased with the growth period. In the simple kiln (400 - $500^{\circ}C$), the amount of volatile matter of the bamboo charcoal was approximately two times higher than that obtained from the special and improved kilns. Despite of the high amount of volatile matter in the simple kiln, the fixed carbon was more than 80%. The 5-year-aged bamboo charcoal showed the highest levels in specific surface area and iodine value. The physical properties of the bamboo charcoals prepared from the 3- and 5-year-aged Chinese bamboo were relatively worse those of Korean bamboo of the same ages. It was probably thought caused by less dense structure of the Chinese bamboo of 3- and 5-year-aged than the domestic in morphological aspects.

  • Stem blight symptoms were observed in greenhouse-grown bottle gourds (Lagenaria siceraria) in Wanju, Korea. Infected plants showed leaf chlorosis and wilting; the plants eventually died with the infected leaves remaining attached, and black sclerotia formed on the diseased stem. Based on the morphological characteristics and pathogenicity results and sequence analyses of the internal transcribed spacer, translation elongation factor 1-α, β-tubulin, and calmodulin regions, the isolated fungus was Macrophomina phaseolina. This is the first report of charcoal rot in Lagenaria siceraria caused by Macrophomina phaseolina in Korea.

  • This study evaluates heavy metal(Cu and Cr) adsorption characteristics produced from food waste charcoal extracted in an optimal operation condition after analyzing activated charcoal of iodine adsorption and heavy metals that derived from an activation process of carbide by the developed by-products of food waste treatment facility using the methods from previous studies. As experiment apparatus, this study used a tube-shaped high temp furnace. The mixing ratio of by-products of food waste treatment facility, carbide, and activation component($ZnCl_2$) was 1:1. The experiment was proceeded as adjusting the activation temperature from 400 to $800^{\circ}C$ and activation time from 30 to 120 minutes. The optimal activation condition for iodine absorption was 90 minutes at $700^{\circ}C$ and by using the produced food waste charcoal, this study conducted an experiment on absorption of heavy metals (Cu and Cr) as changing pH of artificial wastewater and stirring time. As a result, pH 7 showed the highest heavy metal decontamination ratio and in terms of stirring time, it revealed balance adsorption after 10 minutes. This result can be particularly applied as basic data for recyclability of high concentration organic waste, by-products of food waste treatment facility, as an food waste charcoal.
