  • Obejectives : The electroacupuncture(EA) on regional fat is often used by oriental medicine doctors in Korea. However, there have been few studies about safety and biocompatibility of its application. Therefore we investigated the safety and change of mechanical character of electroacupuncture after its application on localized fat deposit. Methods : Online surveys were completed from Aug 21 2008 to Aug 28 2008, by email, the online survey data were obtained from nearly 10,002 Korean medical doctors who listed their email address on the website of association of korean oriental medicine. This study includes an experiment on the physical strength and biological property of long needles. We represent each method which were collected in advance survey, then sealed the needles off and did laboratory experiment, which includes surface observation, analysis, vickers hardness test, and also biocompatibility and toxicity test. Results : There was no considerable difference about the physical property after applying electric current, the cell survival rate did not change in comparison with controlled group either. Conclusions : Although it seems there are no considerable acupuncture-related problem, we still need additional studies about clinical effectiveness difference related operation condition. Besides, it will need research on the actual condition, standardization, and criteria about the comsumed needle in Korea.

  • Background and Purpose : Though there were many clinical studies of acupuncture effects they didn't have appropriate control group. So we didn't say it was true acupuncture effect, though subjects in clinical study improved. To investigate the possibility of sham acupuncture application, we examined how well subjects distinguished real acupuncture from sham acupuncture. Methods : We investigate the possibility of sham acupuncture application as the following 3 kinds of methods. 1. The public (n=60) and Oriental Medicine Doctors (n=20) looked at the appearance of acupuncture and then were treated with randomly allocated acupuncture and judged it as real or sham. 2. The public (n=60) and Oriental Medicine doctors (n=20) were treated with randomly allocated acupuncture, then they looked at the appearance of acupuncture and judged it as real or sham. 3. The public (n=60) were treated with randomly allocated acupuncture (right-real-left-sham), (right-sham-left-real), (left-real-right-sham), (left-sham-right-real), then they judged it as real or sham. Results : 1. When the public (n=60) looked at the acupuncture appearance, the correct judgement ratio was 63.3%. After they were treated with acupuncture, the correct judgement ratio was 50.0%. 2. When Oriental Medicine doctors (n=20) looked at the acupuncture appearance, the correct judgement ratio was 25.0%. After they were treated with acupuncture, the correct judgement ratio was 45.0%. 3. When the public (n=60) were treated with acupuncture, the correct judgement ratio was 50.0%. After they looked at the acupuncture appearance, the correct judgement ratio was 63.3%. 4. When Oriental Medicine doctors (n=20) were treated with acupuncture, the correct judgement ratio was 65.5%. After they looked at the acupuncture appearance, the correct judgement ratio was 65.0%. 5. After the public (n=60) were treated with randomly allocated sham or real acupuncture as (right-real-left-sham), (right-sham-left-real), (left-real-right-sham), or (left-sham-right-real). the correct judgement ratio was 66.7% in looking at the acupuncture appearance group, and in not looking at 60.0%. Conclusion : These results indicated that Kim Sham Acupuncture could apply to the double blind clinical study of acupuncture effect. Results : Analyzing these 6529 persons, 65.8% were female, and 79.6% were seniors aged over 65. By disease category motor systemic disease or circulatory disease affected 84% of the patients. By medication or treatment category. O-Juk-San (五積散) at 38.3% was the greatest proportion, and Pal-Mul-Tang (八物湯) the second greatest. As to medical fee, 80.2% of the patients were not charged for treatment. Conclusions : The extract of herbal medication should be more expanded in the medical insurance, and should be improved in quality. • South Korea's medical system has dual systems-that is, Oriental and Western Medicine. Both are different from method for diagnosis or treatment of diseases and Scientific principle. Of the characteristics of Oriental medical practice in comparison with Western medical practice, notably, it is difficult to acknowledge specific constitutions, Oriental medical doctors' discretion is broad, and Oriental medical practice has a low invasiveness. Thus, it is difficult to acknowledge human specific constitutions when grounded on Oriental medical principles, thereby making it difficult for Oriental medical doctors to argue such specific constitutions as a means of defending against their medical negligence. And, it is difficult to prove Oriental medical doctors' negligence because Oriental medical doctors' scope of discretion is broad. Collaboration of Oriental medicine and western medicine can diagnose and treat the patient's diseases from a different viewpoint, making both medicines complementary. Oriental medicine and western medicine are independent of each other, equal, thus making them divided horizontally. Horizontal medical service division involves the principle of trust, but the principle of trust does not always apply to Oriental medicine and western medicine, because if patients shift from one area of medicine to another, the scientific principle, diagnostic method and treatment method of that medical area should be different. Application of the principle of trust to both of them needs to be analyzed according to types of medical institutions where transfers occur, and to the scope of work division between them.

  • The Chosun dynasty woman doctors served important roles as professional doctors. Most of these woman doctors are believed to have been either assistants to their male counterparts or specialists for certain limited fields such as gynecology. Despite such circumstances, some woman doctors such as 장덕 or 귀금 were even mentioned in the 조선왕조실록 for their outstanding abilities. In such cases where a doctor was recognized for their skills, they were entitled to higher social status and/or financial benefits.

  • An empirical formula that has been empirically shown to be effective for a particular condition can be said to add medical materials to an exciting formula or to make a new prescription by Korean medical doctors' empirical clinic. This dissertation aims to study the prescriptions according to A Confidential Document of A Distinguished Medical Family and to contribute to the development of Korean medicine. A Confidential Document of A Distinguished Medical Family is a medicinal recipe that is an heirloom of the Gyeongju Kim family for the eighth generation. And the date and the writer of the book are unknown. The contents of the book consist of 18 parts and are made up of about 300 medical recipes. Of these, 153 formulas and indications of roundworm, cholera, puffy swelling, abdominal distension, phlegm-rheum, woman, child, summerheat, dryness-heat, eye, and blood are found in the book. From among these, 26 formulas are directly quoted out of The Precious Mirror of Oriental Medicine, 93 formulas are adjusted in proportion or combined and 34 formulas are empirical ones. By the parity of reasoning of the above, I think that this book was published after The Precious Mirror of Oriental Medicine.
