  • The present study employs the Delphi method to devise a consensus-based protocol for utilizing integrated acupuncture in treating medial tibial stress syndrome (MTSS). Twenty acupuncture experts contributed opinions across six key themes, including diagnosis, acupuncture points, additional Traditional Oriental Medicine modalities, treatment rationale, treatment duration/frequency, and integration of yoga/naturopathic therapies. Consensus, defined as a 70% agreement or higher, was reached on all themes, reflecting a collective acknowledgment of the necessity for a holistic approach to MTSS management. The final protocol includes six diagnostic criteria, six acupuncture points, one additional modality, two Traditional Oriental Medicine therapies, four treatment rationales, and six yoga/naturopathic therapies. The present comprehensive protocol offers valuable guidance for healthcare professionals seeking an integrated approach to MTSS management.

The average number of different types of therapies used was 3.4. More experience with various types of therapies were found among those respondents of higher education, older age group, higher income, married group, religious group than among the opposite groups of respondents. Herb medications were used most frequently(39.8%), followed by minor grains(37.9%), Ginseng(23.8%), Boshintang(21.5%), acupuncture(20.3%), Gaesojou(15.3%) Gingko nut(12.0%), mushroom(11.5%), Cupping therapy(10.2%), and black goat(0.0%). Acupuncture and Herb medications were used for treatment of hypertension the most frequently; minor grains or silkworm for treatment of diabetic mellitus; vegetables for treatment of obesity; acupuncture, Cupping Therapy, Herb medications for treatment of rheumatism; and acupuncture, Herb medications, or exercises for treatment of Cerebro Vascular Accident(CVA). In response to the views of complementary and alternative medicine which they had used, they recommended minor grains first, followed by Ginseng, acupuncture, Gingko nut, Cupping Therapy, vegetables, Boshintang, black goat, mushroom and Herb medications. In contrast, they did not recommend Herb medications, acupuncture, nor Gaesojou. Conclusions: These findings indicate that many people use various complementary and alternative medicine without any guidelines for treatment of serious chronic diseases not even to invigorate themselves. It is, therefore, suggested that medical doctors or scientists verify the true effects or side-effects from the most common complementary or alternative therapies through experiments. Also medical doctors should provide a comfortable atmosphere for discussion among doctors and patients who would like to try these therapies.

  • Objectives : The aim of this study was to investigate the changes of attitude toward the oriental medicine for 10 years. Methods : A questionnaire was done about general characteristic of patient, the decision-maker of use and the reason of choice or alteration for oriental medicine hospital. Results : The results of this survey are as follows: For 10 years, sex ratio of outpatients is similar, but age distribution is even at all ages. The choice for oriental medicine is more determined by oneself than by others. The recommenders are more variable increasingly. The most common cause of moving from western medicine is to get the more effective treatment. The more the concomitant users are increasing, the more the patients that did not give notice to the western doctor about the dual therapies is increasing, also. The most frequent reason without a notice is "being afraid of western doctor's bias". Conclusions : The appropriate transfer system between oriental and western clinic must be constructed and the proper recognition about dual therapies will be needed among patients and especially dual doctors.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is to review the current status of Complementary and Alternative medicine (CAM) in Canada, and derive its implications for Korean Medicine (KM). Methods : In order to understand the current status of CAM in Canada, a literature survey was conducted using academic databases such as PubMed, OASIS, RISS, and Google Scholar, and CAM regulations were identified through each state's legal website. Official documents provided on the Canadian government were referenced, and publications and official information were searched on the websites of related organizations. Results : In Canada, accredited CAM therapies include acupuncture, traditional Chinese medicine, natural therapy, massage therapy, homeopathy, and chiropractic. Regulations on these therapies vary from state to state in Canada, but all have laws, and education, licenses, organizations, and insurance systems are also regulated. In particular, the education and licensing system for natural therapy and chiropractic are relatively strict, and as a result, therapists can use the name of a doctor. The authority of CAM therapists is based on education. Conclusions : CAM therapies authorized in Canada have systematic regulation, and therapists have also been legally granted expertise. It may be surmised that the accumulation of policy and clinical evidence is important as one of the ways to maintain the expertise of KM.
