  • Objective: The objective of this study was to analyze the patterns of tooth movements when distalization of mandibular molars using a mini-plate took place. A finite element analysis was applied to analyze patterns of tooth movements. Methods: The model of the mandible and teeth were used to build a finite element analysis model, and a mini-plate was inserted in the mandibular ramus. Two different orthodontic forces were established for displacement of mandibular molars. Orthodontic forces were applied at the level of the bracket and at the level of the cemento-enamel junction in the mandibular canine respectively. Results: Applying orthodontic forces at the level of the cemento-enamel junction resulted in a greater biomechanical bodily movement in distalization of the mandibular molars compared to when the orthodontic forces were applied at the level of the bracket. Applying orthodontic forces to the cemento-enamel junction also resulted in unwanted greater extrusive movements in distalization of the mandibular molars compared to the bracket level. Conclusions: With considering the mode of orthodontic teeth movement, applying different vertical orthodontic forces for distalization of mandibular molars can lead to more effective distalization of teeth.

  • Impaction of the tooth can cause functional and esthetic problems, so early intervention is critical. This report describes two cases of orthodontic traction of impacted mandibular canine and mandibular premolar teeth using a modified mandibular lingual arch soldered with traction hooks rather than a conventional orthodontic appliance. By planning the position and shape of the traction hooks with consideration for the three-dimensional position and angulation of the impacted teeth, clinicians can apply the intended direction and magnitude of traction force. Furthermore, this appliance can be used for multiple impacted teeth in various locations within the mandibular arch by modifying the position and shape of the traction hooks.

  • This study was undertaken in order to observe the prevalence of congenital dental anomalies especially that of oligodontia and supernumerary teeth in 1024 children at age from 4 to 14 years, through history taking, oral examinations, roentgenographic observations of subjects, and statistic analysis was made. The following results were obtained: 1. The prevalence of oligodontia in 1024 children was $6.45{\pm}.8$ percent with a total of 122 teeth absent in sixty-six subjects, excluding 3rd molars, and most of children (86.4%) who have congenitally missing teeth showed abscence of one or two teeth individually. 2. The teeth most frequently absent were the mandibular second premolar, maxillary second premolar, maxillary lateral incisor, mandibular central incisor, and mandibular lateral incisor in order. 3. There was no statistically significant difference found in tooth abscence in the following comparisons; .Male vs Female .Bilateral vs Unilateral .Maxilla vs Mandible .Right vs Left 4. The prevalence of supernumerary teeth in 1024 children was $4.79{\pm}.67$ percent with a total of 59 supernumerary teeth in forty-nine subjects, all of children who have supernumerary teeth showed one or two supernumerary teeth individually. 5. Statistically significant difference was found in supernumerary teeth in the comparison of male vs female, and they were more frequent in male.

  • Odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs) are one of the most aggressive cysts in the oral and maxillofacial area because of their high recurrence rate and infiltrative behavior. In growing patients with OKCs, a radical treatment approach might cause numerous complications, including the disturbance of jaw growth and loss of the involved tooth. This case report describes successful comprehensive orthodontic treatment combined with marsupialization of the cyst in a young girl who exhibited an OKC with impacted teeth. The 10-year-old girl presented with an OKC extending from the mandibular symphysis through the left mandibular body, with ectopic impaction of the mandibular left canine and first premolar, as well as congenitally missing bilateral mandibular second premolars. Interestingly, spontaneous improvement of the positions of the ectopic impacted teeth, along with a reduction in the size of the cyst, occurred during marsupialization. The sequential use of removable and fixed appliances enabled orthodontic traction of the impacted teeth. The treatment outcome was stable at 2.5 years after the end of the treatment. We speculate that comprehensive orthodontic treatment combined with marsupialization can be an effective treatment strategy for patients with OKCs, especially when they are encountered in young, growing patients with impacted teeth.

  • Orthodontic treatment of a complex case that involves retained deciduous mandibular second molars with missing permanent successors is challenging. Usually, congenitally missing teeth are manifested with other dental anomalies that further complicate orthodontic treatment, such as retained deciduous teeth, impactions, transpositions and peg-shaped lateral incisors. Even though the long term prognosis of the retained deciduous tooth is not fully predictable, if the teeth are in good condition, the patient and clinician may incline towards a decision to preserve the deciduous teeth as long as possible. This case report demonstrates that deciduous teeth, in this case the mandibular second molars and maxillary canine, can be incorporated into final occlusion with clinically stable long-term results.

  • This research was performed to find out the adaptation patterns of maxillary and mandibular posterior teeth to the changes in relationships of vertical skeletal components, which constitute the skeletofacial complex. For this research, 61 adult malocclusion patients were chosen as subjects according to the Hellman's dental age with normally ranged FMN-A-B angle. These subjects were divided into 4 groups in maxilla and 3 groups in mandible according to mesiodistal inclinations of teeth. Following results were obtained after studying the relationships of the vertical skeletal components between each group. 1. Inspire of the fact that the FMN-A-B angle was within a normal range, the degree of mesiodistal inclinations of maxillary and mandibular posterior teeth showed differences in relation to the anteroposterior relationships of maxilla and mandible. In case where the FMN-A-B angle was large, the mesial inclinations of maxillary posterior teeth showed more increase from the posterior to the anterior, whereas in mandible it showed overall decrease. 2. The degrees of mesial inclinations of mandibular posterior teeth were increased when the angulations of lower facial height, occlusal plane angle and mandibular plane angle were greater. 3. The patterns of mesial inclinations of maxillary posterior teeth were varied according to the angulation of lower facial height. If relatively large, it showed more increase from the posterior to the anterior and it was decreased nearly consistent when the angulation was small. 4. The degrees of mesial inclinations of maxillary posterior teeth were decreased as the lower facial height, palatal plane angle, occlusal plane angle and the mandibular plane angle became greater.

  • The clinical and radiographic features of 655 congenitally missing teeth were studied with full mouth periapical radiograms and/or pantomograms from 368 persons visited the Department of Oral Radiology, Infirmary of Dentistry, Kyung Hee University during January 1981 to December 1989. The obtained results were as follows: 1. The prevalence of congenitally missing teeth was revealed to be 8.75% in total examined persons, and there was a higher prevalence in females (9.5%) than in males (8.0%). 2. The most frequently missing teeth were mandibular second premolars (24.6%), followed by mandibular lateral incisors (21.7%), maxillary second premolars (16.2%), and maxillary lateral incisors (11.5%). 3. There was a higher prevalence in the mandible (60.3%) than in the maxilla (39.7%), and no significant differences between right (49.65%) and left (50.35%) side. 4. In number of congenitally missing teeth per person, 54.6% had one missing tooth, and 32.9% had two missing teeth. 5. In persons with one or two congenitally missing teeth, the most frequently missing tooth was mandibular lateral incisor, and the second premolar was the tooth most frequently missing in those persons with more than three congenitally missing teeth.

  • Treatment methods of mandibular condylar fracture were conservative and surgical method. Surgical method of mandibular high condylar fracture was very difficult because approach and internal fixation of small size fracture fragment were difficult. So there is a tendency to select conservative method over surgical method for guiding a stable occlusion and avoiding TMJ disorder and growth disturbance, minimizing pain and deviation during function. But, in case of mandibular high condylar fracture patient who has no biting teeth on posterior teeth area, guiding a stable occlusion and conservative functional treatment were very difficult. In this case, patient was 62years old male. He had fracture of mandibular symphysis, right mandibular body, left mandibular high condyle. We treated the patient for mandibular symphysis and right mandibular body fracture area with surgical method. But left mandibular high condylar fracture area was difficult to treat with surgical method. So we selected a conservative functional method on left mandibular high condylar fracture area. We intended recovery of vertical dimension and stable occlusion with implantation of immediate provisional implant on maxillar and mandibular posterior teeth area, and temporary crown. And then patient did mandibular functional movement and his mandibular function was recoverd.
