Methods: The balanced panel data of 246 firms which have existed for the period 2001-2012 are constructed. As a method of analysis, fixed effects panel data model is used. Results: There is a one year lag in the relationship between R&D intensity and the subsequent sales growth of firms and its relation depends on the firms' characteristics. Conclusion: We suggest the emphasis on R&D investment for firms' growth and the differentiated R&D program based on firm size. This article has the limitation that various types of R&D investment cannot be included in this analysis.

  • Manufacturing firms face a paradigm shift from industrial systems driven by efficiency to post-industrial systems where success depends on a quick-response to customer demands for a variety of high-quality products. In essence, time is becoming a critical dimension for competition. New information technologies allow many firms to pursue time-based competitive strategies. The purpose of this research is to investigate the relationship among the types of information technology, behaviors of suppliers, the structures of new product development processes, and the competitiveness of the firms. The data for this study were collected from 96 Korean manufacturing firms that have implemented certain types of information technologies. Research results from LISREL analysis confirm that the competitiveness comes from product innovation capabilities and innovative product development process. But the linkage between the information technologies and the firms' competitiveness proves to be indirect. Suppliers, organizational culture related to IT, and some other factors also have indirect impact on the competitiveness. A summarized report of other findings is provided as well.

  • This paper analyzes the technical efficiencies of 40 Korean system integration firms using data envelopment analysis (DEA) and Malmquist productivity indices. Technical efficiencies on average had been decreased over the five year period and the efficiency difference between best practice firms and catch-up firms had been increased during this period, meaning that the industry structure has become matured and the possibilities for catch-up firms to be efficient are not remained so much. The differences in efficiency by the differences in ownership structures are statistically significant. It implies that the efficiencies of group-affiliated firms have come from benefits such as the captive market umbrellas, not from their own management competencies. In addition, the technical efficiency is highly correlated with captive market sales, information productivity, sales per employees, rates of value added, returns on invested capital, and EBITDA.

  • The study analyzed the effectiveness of a technology transfer and commercialization support program to Korean technology transfer offices and firms. The study created a logic model to design a questionnaire to analyze how the support program, directly and indirectly, affected the technology transfer offices and the firms' performances. The study found that technology transfer offices are focused not only on potential firms' excavation activity to process the technology transfer but also on providing strategic support to provide practical assistance to the firms' needs. Not only has the number of technology transfer cases increased during the two-year program duration, but other activities, such as technical guidance and various strategic consulting for commercialization of the transferred technology, have also appeared to have increased considerably. Support program has helped strengthen the firms' internal capabilities, expand new market capabilities, and increase the firms' indirect performances.

  • Purpose: This study investigates the role of authenticity in the effect of CSV activities of sports firms on corporate trust based on the attribution theory. Although many studies have been conducted on CSV, studies on the sports firms' CSV activities and their authenticity are insufficient. Methods: This study surveyed consumers who have experienced CSV activities of sports firms. The data were analyzed using structural equation model and hierarchical regression analysis. Results: The results showed that sports firms' CSV activities significantly affected corporate trust and authenticity played an important role in regulating the impact of CSV activities on corporate trust. The more authenticity was recognized by customers, the higher the performance of sports firms' CSV activities. Conclusion: These results imply that it is important to establish authentic CSV strategy, as performance of CSV activities is mainly determined by authenticity.

  • In a new paradigm of competition, firms face a multiple industry in a generation and compete with existing capabilities and resources in a new industry. Firms need to increase dynamic capabilities to adjust to a radical change in terms of technologies for survival and sustainable growth in a new industry. But we lack a clear conceptual model explaining evolutionary process of firms facing a emerging industry with different experiences in a prior industry and where heterogeneity in firms' technological portfolios come from. How we explaining firms' heterogeneity arising in a new industiy? In this article, I suggest hypothesis explaining firms' heterogeneity in a new industry with the concept of existent industry's technological trajectories, available assets, core processes and show the possibility of model to explain the heterogeneity of firms.

  • Purpose - This study aims to examine whether family firm governance is related to long-term corporate survival. To find out whether and why family firms have higher chances of long-term survival compared to non family firms, this study analyzes the relationship between some governance characteristics that are prevalent in family firms and corporate long-term viability. Design/methodology/approach - This study utilizes a sample of 285 family firms listed on the Korea Stock Exchange (KSE) to probe the influence of governance characteristics on corporate survival. This study conducts Cox proportional hazard regression analysis to estimate the influences on the survival duration. Findings - The results indicate that firms with particular governance characteristics show higher long-term survivability. Specifically, the probability of firm's long-term survival is increased when the CEO is the largest shareholder, which may be related to CEO's stewardship attitudes. Research implications or Originality - This study has significance in that it examines the direct causal variables that enhance long-term corporate viability through a large scale empirical examination. Also, the study findings provide some clues as to why certain family firms outlive non-family firms.
