First Zoea of Chasmagnathus convexus (Decapoda: Brachyura: Varunidae) Hatched in the Laboratory

  • First zoea of cyclograpsinine crab Chasmagnathus convexus (De Haan, 1835) belonging to the family Varunidae, is described and illustrated in detail based on laboratory-hatched material from an ovigerous female collected in Seumjingang river mouth, southern Korea. Morphological comparison is made with previous description of C. convexus from Japan, The first zoea of C. convexus can be readily distinguished from those of six species of Cyclograpsus intermedius Ortmann, 1894, Helicana japonica (K. Sakai and Yatsuzuka, 1980), Helicana wuana (Rathbun, 1931), Helice tientsinensis Rathbun, 1931, Helice tridens (De Man, 1835), and Pseudohelice quadrata (Dana, 1851), the other known cyclograpsinine species in Korea by having the lateral carapace spine, a pair of dorsolateral processes on the fourth abdominal somite, the exopod of antenna with three setae, and the exopod of antenna as being 24.7% length to the protopod.

Effects of the Insect Growth Regulator Dimilin on Larval Development of Hemigrapsus sanguineus (Crustacea, Brachyura) Reared in the Laboratory (무늬발게 幼生에 對한 Dimilin 의 致死 影響)

  • The effects of insect growth regulator Dimilin which interfere with the synthesis of chitin in the cuticle of insect larvae were investigated at various concentrations using the crab larvae of Hemigrapsus sanguineus. The larvae were cultured at control, 0.5, 1, 5 and 10 $\mu g$ Dimilin solutions and three replicate experiments were carried out to give correct analysis. Significant differences in percent mortality have occurred between control and 10$\mu g$ when the larvae were exposed to Dimilin whereas no differences were found between 5 and 10$\mu g$ Dimilin concentrations. If lethal concentration is defined as concentration at which less than 10 percent of crab larvae reach to the last zoeal stage from hatching it can be concluded that insect growth regulator Dimilin is lethal to the larvae of Hemigrapsus sanguineus at 5 and 10$\mu g$ Dimilin.

  • The article provides information on type specimens of 150 taxa of vascular plants from Korea, kept in the Herbarium of the Komarov Botanical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences. For all specimens, type category is indicated. Lectotypes for the names of Clematis brachyura Maxim., C. spectabilis Palib., Corydalis wilfordii Regel, Poa viridula Palib., Polygonum marretii H. L$\acute{e}$v., P. sagittatum L. var. hallaisanense H. L$\acute{e}$v., P. taquetii H. L$\acute{e}$v. and P. thunbergii Sieb. et Zucc. var. coreana H. L$\acute{e}$v. were designated. Type specimens examined in this article belong to the taxa described by Russian botanists V.L. Komarov, K.J. Maximovicz and I.V. Palibin, French botanist A.A.H. L$\acute{e}$veill$\acute{e}$ (some with co-author E. Vaniot) and others.

  • Ovigerous crabs of Erimacrus isenbeckii were collected from the northeastern coast of South Korea and their larvae were reared in the laboratory. Two zoeal stages were described and illustrated in detail. The first zoeal characteristics between the present material and Sasaki and Mihara's (1993: J Crust Biol. 13:511 522) were different especially in the setations of the endopods of the maxillipeds. The zoea of Erimacrus isenbeckii strongly resembled those of two Telmessus species in the Cheiragonidae, but the former could be distinguished from the latter by having spinulate carapace spines, a lateral process on the abdominal somite 3, and longer lateral spines on the telson fork.

Food Habits of the Asian Paddle Crab, Charybdis japonica (A. Milne-Edwards) on the Jangbong Tidal Flat, Incheon, Korea (민꽃게, Charybdis japonica (A. Milne-Edwards)의 섭식생태)

  • The Asian paddle crab, Charybdis japonica (A. Milne-Edwards) is an important fishery resource in Korea. Despite its common occurrence and commercial importance, few studies have been carried out on the life cycle and trophic ecology of these populations inhabiting on the tidal flat. Food habits of C. japonica populations were investigated on the Jangbong tidal flat, Incheon, Korea. Monthly samples were taken using a modified otter trawl from November 1999 to January 2001. Based on the examination of stomach contents from 257 individuals, the frequencies of occurrence and the relative volumes of food items were analysed. As a result, the crustaceans (the brachyura, the cirripedia and the harpacticoid copepoda), the echinoderms (the ophiuroidea) and the molluscs (the cephalopoda Loligo beka, the bivalves Bivalvia unid. and Mytilus galloprovincialis) were important food for this species. To examine ontogenetic shifts in diets, individuals of C. japonica were categorized into 2 different size classes (${\leq}60mm$ and ${\geq}61mm$ in carapace width) representing sexually premature and mature stages. The food items of the small crabs (${\leq}60mm$) were dominated by the crustaceans with the harpacticoid copepods constituting 84.6% of total prey number. The next group was the bivalves and the brachyurans. On the other hand, the large crabs (${\geq}61mm$) mainly feed on the bivalvia (Mytilus galloprovincialis and Bivalvia unid.), the brachyurans (Crab unid.) and occasionally the cephalopods and fishes. The difference in proportions of the main prey items among these two size classes was statistically significant. Therefore, the feeding habits of the portunid crab, C. japonica changed with growth.

Studies on Orithyia sinica (Linnaeus) in the Western Sea- II -Weight of ovary, number of eggs spawned and egg diameter- (서해산 범게 자원에 관한 연구-II -난소중량, 포난수 및 난경-)

  • The present paper deals with seasonal variation of ovary weight, number of eggs spawned and carapace width (CW) of Orithyia sinica (Calappidae, Brachyura) based on the samples monthly collected from May to November 1981. Ovary weight of the prematured crabs (CW, 50 mm) was less than 0.5g. Biological minimum size of the female was approximately 55 mm in carapace width. Ovary weight was 0.01-0.5g in the premature stage, 3.0-15.9g in the virgin stage, and 0.2-1.5g in the ovigerous stage. Number of eggs spawned depended on the size of the females, and it ranged from $240{\times}10^2\;to\;1073{\times}10^2(mean\;ca.542{\times}10^2)$. The diameter of eggs spawned was in the range of 547-913 ${\mu}m(mean ca.712{\mu}m).$

Effects of Temperature on Larval Growth and Survival in the Wrinkled Swimming Crab (Liocarcinus corrugatus) (Brachyura: Portunidae) Reared in the Laboratory (주름꽃게 (Liocarcinus corrugatus) 유생의 성장과 생존에 대한 온도의 영향)

  • The effects of temperature on the growth of larvae of wrinkled swimming crab (Liocarcinus corrugatus) under controlled laboratory conditions of 15, 20 and $24^{\circ}C$ were investigated (33.5 psu: 12L: 12B). Each specimen was maintained individually, the instar size was determined from exuvia, and the survival and intermolt period of each instar were recorded. There were no significant differences (P>0.05) in the survival rates at 15, 20, and $24^{\circ}C.$ Comparison of survival over the first 27 days between the three temperature regimes showed significant differences (P<0.001). The intermolt period increased with the instar number, and was greatly extended at the lowest temperature. The molt increment varied little with temperature, and had a mean value of $21.35\%$ over the whole study. Temperature had little effect on survival and molt increment.

Fauna of the Crabs on the Coasts of the Western Islands of Korea (한국서해 도서 연안의 게류 분포상)

  • The author colelcted crabs (Tribe Brachyura ) on the coasts of fourteen western islands of South Korea (Paenyong Do, Taechong Do, Sochong Do, Taeyonpyong Do, Kanghwa Do, Yongjong Do, Chagyak Do, Tokchok To. Moktok To. Pukkyoknyolbi Do. Ong Do, ANmyon Do, Pigum Do, and Taehuksan Do) mainly in summers during a period ranging from 1955 to 1962. Of these Islands, Paeknyong , Taehong, Taeyonpyong, Ong, Anmyon, Pigum and Taehuksan Do are the localities where the crabs were investigated firstly by the present author. The collections made by the author consist of 1779 specimens of crabs involving 9 families. 25 genera, 33 species and 5 subspecies (Table2). 23 species of crabs had been reported hitherto from Tokchok To and 7 from Kanghwa Do. In present paper the author adds 1 species to the fauna of crabs of Tokchok To and 7 to that of Kanghwa Do. Among 38 species or subspecies of crabs collected, Oregonia gracilis, Cancer amphioetus and Chaesmagnathus convexus are new to the fauna of the west coast of Korea. 57 species of crabs are therefore identified in this area. The author collected Pinnotheres cardii on Taechong Do and Scopimera bitympana on Pigum Do. It became, therefore, clear that these two kinds of crabs occur much wider areas than known hitherto in Korea. The nothern limit of the distribution of Ocypoda stinpsoni and Sesarma haematocheir is Kyungki Bay as known already, that of Helice tridens is ,however, more northern part than Kyungki Bay, since they were collected on Paeknyong Do.

Feeding Habits of the Marbled Flounder Pseudopleuronectes yokohamae in the West Sea in Korea (한국 서해에 출현하는 문치가자미(Pseudopleuronectes yokohamae)의 식성)

  • The feeding habits of the marbled flounder Pseudopleuronectes yokohamae were studied using 384 specimens (10.7-52.3 cm in total length) collected from the West Sea, Korea between January and December 2021. P. yokohamae ate mainly polychaeta and gastropoda, incuding teleostei, caridea, euphausiacea, amphipoda and brachyura. The mean number of preys per stomach (mN/ST) showed a statistically significant difference, and the mean weight of prey per stomach (mW/ST) increased as the total length increased. P. yokohamae ate mainly teleostei in spring and winter. P. yokohamae ate mainly euphausiacea in summer and mainly polychaeta in autumn.

  • The first zoea of Liomera bella belonging to the subfamily Liomerinae is described and illustrated for the first time. Its morphological characteristics are compared with those of other known species of the Xanthidae The general morphology of it corresponds well with zoeas of the Xanthidae. Based on the zoeal morphology, the zoea of L. bella shows a greatest affinity with those of Xontho incisus and Pseudomedaeus agassizii by having the exopod of antenna with two setae, the terminal segment of the endopod of the second maxilliped with six setae, and the fork of telson with one stout and one smaller lateral spines.
