Who Are Domestic Travel Agency Users and Who Buys Full Package Trips? A Study of Korean Outbound Travelers

  • The purpose of this study is to identify differences based on demographic characteristics and travel-related characteristics: first, whether travelers used a domestic travel agency and second whether travelers purchased a full-package travel program. A sample selection probit model was used to provide simultaneous evaluation of the different characteristics of outbound travelers. The present study investigates how tourists make decisions based on two travel-pattern choices. It then goes on to explore the characteristics of outbound travelers from South Korea. The data is drawn from a nationwide survey in South Korea, and a total of 859 surveys were used for analysis. Due to the interdependent nature of the choices, a sample selection probit model was used to estimate outbound tourists' use of domestic travel agency and purchase of full travel package. Significant determinants of domestic travel agency use are identified as age, gender, marital status, party size, children, length of travel, and travel distance, while those of full travel package purchase are age, marital status, and travel purpose. Estimated results provide manifestations of differing travel needs of outbound travelers. the results of this study demonstrate differences between travel-agency users and full-package travel-program consumers and provide determinants that affect the purchase of full-package travel.

Influence of Self-Construal on Choice of Overseas Travel Product Type

  • Purpose: Understanding which product types of overseas travel (free independent travel vs. package travel) consumers will choose is one of the key issues of marketing and consumer behavior in travel agency management. Prior studies on overseas travel type preferences mainly focused on comparing regional differences (e.g., Asian vs. Westerner, or Korean vs. Australian, or Korean vs. Japanese, or American, French, Italian vs. Japanese) influencing the choice of overseas travel type. Another researchers focused on comparing cultural differences (e.g., individualism vs. collectivism, or individualistic culture vs. collectivistic culture), subcultural difference (e.g., acculturation; Koreans living in Republic of Korea vs. Koreans living in Australia), travel lifestyle, and socio-demographics (e.g., age, gender, income level, education level, marital status, occupation etc.). However, there are few studies that identify individual psychological differences (i.e., individual psychological differences within the same culture) influencing the choice of overseas travel type. Self-construal is a psychological factors that greatly influences choice behavior. The purpose of this study was to examine the role of self-construal as an antecedent variable influencing choice of overseas travel product type. Research design, data and methodology: To achieve the purpose of this study, the questionnaire survey method was used. Self-construal items composed of independent self-construal items and interdependent self-construal items. Product types of overseas travel were free independent travel (FIT) type versus package travel type. In this study, the correlation coefficient between independent self-construal and interdependent self-construal was nonsignificant. It meant that the relationship between independent self-construal and interdependent self-construal was orthogonal. Therefore it was analyzed that independent self-construal and interdependent self-construal separately. Reliability analysis, factor analysis, and logistic regression analysis (controlling gender and age) was used as the data analysis method. Results: According to the results of this study, the stronger independent self-construal, the more preference for the free independent travel type rather than package travel, and the stronger interdependent self-construal, the more preference for the package travel type rather than free independent travel. Conclusions: Self-construal is an antecedent variable influencing the choice of travel type. Travel agencies must consider the consumer's self-construal (independent self-construal vs. interdependent self-construal) before planning and designing overseas travel products.

ARIMA-Intervention 시계열모형을 활용한 제주 국내선 항공여객수요 추정 (A Study on the Air Travel Demand Forecasting using time series ARIMA-Intervention Model)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the effect of intervention variables which may affect the air travel demand for Jeju domestic flights and to anticipate the air travel demand for Jeju domestic flights. The air travel demand forecasts for Jeju domestic flights are conducted through ARIMA-Intervention Model selecting five intervention variables such as 2002 World Cup games, SARS, novel swine-origin influenza A, Yeonpyeongdo bombardment and Japan big earthquake. The result revealed that the risk factor such as the threat of war that is a negative intervention incident and occurred in Korea has the negative impact on the air travel demand due to the response of risk aversion by users. However, when local natural disasters (earthquakes, etc) occurring in neighboring courtiers and global outbreak of an epidemic gave the negligible impact to Korea, negative intervention incident would have a positive impact on air travel demand as a response to find alternative due to rational expectation of air travel customers. Also we realize that a mega-event such as the 2002 Korea-Japan World Cup games reduced the air travel demand in a short-term period unlike the perception in which it will increase the air travel demand and travel demands in the corresponding area.

TCS 자료 및 GIS를 이용한 한국의 통행패턴 분석 (Travel Pattern Analysis Using TCS Data and GIS in Korea)

  • 2002년에 한국에 도입된 주 5일 근무제는 사람들의 주중 통행 및 주말 통행 패턴을 바꾸어 왔다. 이러한 변화가 교통 시스템에 미치는 영향을 파악하기 위하여 여러 연구들이 수행되었으나 이 연구들은 공간적 요소를 고려하지 않은 통행 패턴 변화에만 초점이 맞추어졌다. 즉, 개인 통행 패턴의 변화에 대한 연구는 많이 진행되었지만 이러한 변화에 대한 공간적 분석 기법의 부재로 인해 통행 패턴의 변화를 정확하게 분석하지는 못하였다. 본 연구는 주 5일 근무제가 도입된 뒤의 통행변화의 분석을 목적으로 하고 있으며, 이를 위해 통행 벡터 지표처럼 통행 패턴의 변화를 정량적인 관점만이 아닌 공간적인 관점에서 분석할 수 있는 새로운 지표를 이용하는데. 이 새로운 지표는 GIS 기술과 한국 고속도로의 TCS 자료를 이용한다. 본 연구의 결과는 고속도로 TCS 자료에 적용된 이 지표가 주 5일 근무제가 통행 행태에 영향을 미친다는 것을 보여주고 있고, 따라서 통행패턴의 변화를 분석하는데 매우 유용한 방법임을 보여준다.

증강현실을 이용한 커뮤니티 기반 여행 정보 시스템 (Community-Based Travel Information System Using Augmented Reality)

  • When people go to travel, sometimes one writes many articles about the destination. Existing travel information services such as Blog, Internet Cafe, and SNS are difficult to provide realistic information since the provided information may not be a place directly on the road. This paper presents a travel information system including recommended courses, theme courses, and travel map. In addition, the proposed system can provide the functions of writing, reading, and deleting a message note that stores the travel information based on the augmented reality if a defined marker among the community members is recognized in a smartphone App. Therefore, this paper can present an implementation method for new community system using augmented reality and image processing as well as providing the conventional travel information services, and allows the user to take advantage of the realistic and accurate information.

여행경로 추천 서비스를 위한 최적화 수리모형 (New Mathematical Model for Travel Route Recommendation Service)

  • With the increased interest in the quality of life of modern people, the implementation of the five-day working week, the increase in traffic convenience, and the economic and social development, domestic and international travel is becoming commonplace. Furthermore, in the past, there were many cases of purchasing packaged goods of specialized travel agencies. However, as the development of the Internet improved the accessibility of information about the travel area, the tourist is changing the trend to plan the trip such as the choice of the destination. Web services have been introduced to recommend travel destinations and travel routes according to these needs of the customers. Therefore, after reviewing some of the most popular web services today, such as Stubby planner (http://www.stubbyplanner.com) and Earthtory (http://www.earthtory.com), they were supposed to be based on traditional Traveling Salesman Problems (TSPs), and the travel routes recommended by them included some practical limitations. That is, they were not considered important issues in the actual journey, such as the use of various transportation, travel expenses, the number of days, and lodging. Moreover, although to recommend travel destinations, there have been various studies such as using IoT (Internet of Things) technology and the analysis of cyberspatial Big Data on the web and SNS (Social Networking Service), there is little research to support travel routes considering the practical constraints. Therefore, this study proposes a new mathematical model for applying to travel route recommendation service, and it is verified by numerical experiments on travel to Jeju Island and trip to Europe including Germany, France and Czech Republic. It also expects to be able to provide more useful information to tourists in their travel plans through linkage with the services for recommending tourist attractions built in the Internet environment.

프로브 기반 교통정보 신뢰성 향상을 위한 평활화 기법 탐색 (Exploring Smoothing Techniques for Reliable Travel-Time Information in Probe-Based Systems)

  • 하이패스 단말기의 확대 보급에 따라 DSRC 교통정보시스템이 지방부 도로를 중심으로 확대 설치되고 있다. 그러나 지방부 도로의 경우 고속도로와 달리 단말기 장착차량이 많지 않아 프로브 표본수가 충분하지 않는 경우가 종종 발생한다. 이 경우 프로브 통행시간은 적은 샘플수로 인해 많은 변동이 발생하고 이는 교통정보 오차를 증가시킨다. 본 연구는 부족한 샘플수로 인해 발생하는 통행시간 단기변동을 완화하여 신뢰성 있는 교통정보를 수집 제공하기 위해 프로브 통행시간 데이터에 이동평균, Loess, Savitzky-Golay 등 평활화 기법을 적용하였다. 그 결과, 낮은 샘플링(5%) 환경에서 통행시간 오차가 원시자료에 비해 45%까지 감소하는 결과를 보였다. 본 연구결과는 국내에서 운영 중인 프로브 기반 교통정보시스템에 적용되어 교통정보 신뢰도를 향상시킬 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.

A Study on the Effect of Online Travel Distribution's Brand Community Characteristics on Product Purchase Intention

  • Purpose: This study attempted to confirm the mediating effect of brand experience and to travel brand community satisfaction in the relationship between the characteristics of brand community contents and travel product purchase intention. This study also investigated the moderating role of consumer characteristics. Research design, data and methodology: Based on a total of 381 bytes of data, hypothesis verification was conducted using Smart-PLS 3.2.8 statistical package programs. Results: First, the content community travel brand attributes, personal affordability and creativity are a lingering fragrances on the intended consumers ' shopping trip. Second, information provision, interaction, and creativity, which are the characteristics of travel brand community content, influenced consumers' intention to purchase travel products through brand community satisfaction. Third, playfulness, vitality, and creativity, which are the characteristics of travel brand community content, influenced consumers' intention to purchase travel products through double mediation of the experience and community satisfaction of brand. Conclusions: Tourism industry managers should be able to market content by forming their own brand community. It is necessary to create an environment in which tourism industry managers can use social media travel brand community content to give discounts to consumers, provide creative, playful and vivid travel information.

통행시간 추정을 위한 TCS 데이터의 전처리 모형 개발 (A Development of Preprocessing Models of Toll Collection System Data for Travel Time Estimation)

  • TCS (Toll Collection System) 데이터는 원시 데이터 자체로서도 구간의 교통상황을 어느 정도 반영할 수 있는 교통특 성을 내포하고 있다. 그러나 TCS 데이터에는 이상치가 포함되어 있어 이러한 데이터는 해당 구간의 통행시간을 대표한다고 볼 수 없으므로 만약 이러한 이상치들이 포함되어 있음에도 불구하고 제거하지 않고 집락을 한다면 이상치들로 인해 통행시간은 크게 왜곡 될 가능성이 있다. 특히 장거리 구간일수록 통행시간의 분산이 증가하여 동일구간 동일시간대라도 다양한 통행시간이 분포하고 있다. 구간이 길어질수록 통행시간의 변동이 심하여 적절한 통행시간 대푯값을 구하기가 어렵다. 따라서 TCS 자료를 이용하여 통행시간의 대푯값을 산정하기 위해서는 통행시간의 변동 특성을 파악하는 것이 중요하다. 본 연구에서는 TCS 데이터의 전처리 기법을 개선하되 구간의 길이와 교통상황에 따른 통행시간의 변동을 고려하여 TCS 원시데이터로부터 시 공간적 통행패턴을 파악할 수 있는 의미 있는 통행시간을 추출하고자 한다.

해외여행상품 선택을 위한 의사결정 프로세스에 관한 연구 (Decision-making Process for Choosing Alternative Outbound Travel Product)

  • The goal of this article is to ascertain the factors that govern consumers' choosing to outbound travel product. The authors assess the consumers' travel product choosing processes with information search(internal knowledge, external information knowledge). alternative evaluation(perceived image, emotional experience, price acceptability, appeal, trust), and alternative choice(purchasing intention). Using data on Thailand travel product, the authors find considerable results and conclude by discussing prescriptive recommendations for the travel industry.
