Why Tall Buildings? The Potential of Sustainable Technologies in Tall Buildings

  • This paper discusses major strengths of tall buildings that distinguish them as sustainable solutions for the built environment. It sheds light on some of the key attributes of tall buildings as well as materials and technologies that could boost their performance environmentally, economically and technically as well as the natural habitats containing them. Tall buildings are portrait as major successful options for accommodating the ever increasing urban world population, with little negative impact on ecologies and environmental habitats worldwide. The role of tall buildings as 'vertical garden sub-cities' mitigating modern city problems of 'urban heat islands' and sprawling cities is explored. A few building examples as well as city developments are presented which represent the new generation of sustainable tall buildings that are setting trends for future projects incorporating innovations in materials and building systems and designs.

  • This study evaluated the effect of improving the atmospheric environment based on the premise that the supply of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles (HFCV) will be achieved as many as the number of vehicles presented in the hydrogen economy activation roadmap announced by the Korean government in January 2019. The HFCV supply target (2.7 million passenger cars) suggested in the hydrogen economy revitalization roadmap was logically allocated to the five major metropolitan areas in Korea. Air pollution damage costs by region were calculated by reflecting the basic unit of damage cost to the estimated air pollutant emissions. As a result, it was confirmed that the benefits per unit of some cities in Gyeonggi-do were derived more than major cities in the metropolitan area.

인도의 식민도시에 관한 인도 교과서 서술관점 연구 -뉴델리, 마드라스, 캘커타, 봄베이를 중심으로- (A study on the Description of India's Textbooks on Colonial Cities in India -Focused on New Delhi, Madras, Calcutta and Bombay-)

  • 이 글은 인도의 대표적인 식민도시인 뉴델리, 마드라스, 캘커타, 봄베이(현재의 첸나이, 콜카타, 뭄바이)가 교과서에 어떻게 서술되고 있는지 살펴보고 이를 바탕으로 인도인의 관점에서 본 식민도시에 관해 분석하고자 한다. 인도 교과서에서 식민도시들은 도시가 만들어지는 과정과 그에 따른 정치 사회 경제 문화적 변화, 영국인과 인도인 간의 분리, 도시 계획, 식민지배 기간 동안 축조된 건축물들에 대해 서술하고 있으며, 이에 관한 서술관점은 '박탈, 배척, 차별, 저항, 도전'과 '기회의 부여, 수용, 흡수'의 관점이 혼재되어 있다는 점이 특징이다. 즉 식민도시를 둘러싼 서술관점은 대립적이면서도 상호 불가분의 관계를 견지하고 있는데, 영국의 통치 이데올로기가 반영된 식민도시가 가질 수밖에 없는 태생적 특징, 그 안에서 지배자와 피지배자가 만들어가는 사회, 문화적 특징을 단순화시키지 않고 다층적 고찰이 가능하도록 하고 있다. 그러면서도 피지배자로 겪었던 불합리한 차별과 배제에 대한 저항이 있었던 점은 분명히 하고 있다.

우리나라 주요 도시의 대기청명도 평가 (A Study on the Atmospheric Clearness of Major Cities in Korea)

  • 1982년부터 전국 주요 16개 도시에 측정장비를 설치하고, 대기청명도 자료를 수집하였다. 특정된 자료를 토대로 도시별 표준치를 설정하여, 이들 자료를 해당지역의 대기청명 상태의 평가자료로 이용될 수 있도록 하였다. 현지 측정사업의 내용을 중심으로 지금까지의 결과를 살펴보면, 1) 우리나라 주요 도시에서의 대기청명 조건은 연평균 청명한 날을 기준으로 대략 62% 정도이다. 2) 계절별 대기청명 조건은 연평균치에 비하여 봄과 여름철이 각각 63%, 64%로 다소 높았으며, 가을과 겨울철은 각각 61%, 59%로 낮게 나타났다. 3) $'82{\sim}'87$년과 $'88{\sim}'93$년 사이에 측정된 평균자료로 나누어 경년변화를 분석하여 보면, 매년 전 도시에서 공히 청명도가 감소하고 있음을 확인하였다.

지속 가능한 도시경영을 위한 중국 후난성 주요 도시의 공간적 성장 특징분석 (Analysis of Spatial Growth Characteristics of Major Cities in Hunan Province, China for Sustainable Urban Management)

  • Urban space expansion is an important symbol of the urbanization process and has always been an important topic in urban studies. In addition, for sustainable city management, it is important to identify factors that can influence, such as the driving force and direction of urban space expansion, from the stage of establishing an urban development plan. To understand these factors, by observing the expansion process of a specific city, it is possible to sufficiently observe how the urban spatial dimension changes. Through a series of processes, the spatial growth characteristics of the city are analyzed, and the influence and results of important factors are analyzed. For this purpose, this paper examines the changes in the city's outer boundary and land use structure through monitoring data on urban areas of 14 cities in Hunan Province, China from 2000 to 2016. Temporal and spatial regularity according to the urban space expansion of these cities were analyzed, and a preliminary assessment was made on whether the urban space expansion is coordinated with the urban population growth. The assessment result showed: (1) The urban space of most cities has been extended rapidly in 2000-2015 however, the rate and the intensity of urban space expanding has been declining. (2) The construction of the industrial park is the core driving force of the urban space expanding, and the change of the urban space structure is manifested as enclave city expansion because that the industrial park is usually far away from the city center. (3) The population agglomeration is another driving force of the urban space expanding. At this time, the urban space expanding is like boundary extension. (4) Except Changsha city, all of the cities has a high urbanization-area-growth elastic coefficient. It means that most of the cities should enhance the land use degree.

중금속 관측망을 중심으로 한 대기 중 Ni 성분의 분포특성 : $1991{\sim}2004$년 기간을 중심으로 (Airborne nickel in the major monitoring locations in Korea between 1991 and 2004)

  • 본 연구에서는 니켈의 기본적인 제어방안을 도출하기 위한 목적으로 14년 기간($1991{\sim}2004$) 동안 국내 주요 관측점으로부터 확보한 대기환경 중 금속성분들의 자료를 이용하여, 니켈의 기본적인 환경거동을 조사하였다. 주요 도시에서 관측한 니켈의 평균농도는 최소 7.38+6.70 ng $m^3$(원주시) 에서 최대 $41.4{\pm}26.2ng\;m^3$(안산시)의 범위로 나타났다. 그러나 전반적으로 대부분의 도시에서 니켈의 농도는 $10{\sim}20ng\;m^3$ 수준으로 나타났다. 전체 농도를 전체 관측기간을 전반기($1991{\sim}1997$년)와 후반기($1998{\sim}2004$년)로 구분하여 비교하였을 때, 두 기간 동안 뚜렷한 농도의 감소가 대부분의 도시에서 확인되었다. 계절적인 기준으로 구분하였을 때, 여름과 가을에 비해 봄, 겨울의 고농도가 현저하게 나타났다. 전체적인 연구결과를 취합해 보면, Ni의 배출원은 대단히 다양한 형태로 존재하는 것을 추정할 수 있다. 그러나 고농도의 니켈이 대도시 또는 산업시설을 중심으로 나타난다는 점을 감안할 때, 이처럼 분진에 잔존하는 니켈류의 유해금속성분들을 효과적으로 저감하기 위한 대책의 개발이 중요하다.

한반도 대기청명도의 재평가 (Revaluation of Atmospheric Clearness Index in Korea Peninsula)

  • Since the atmospheric clearness index is main factor for evaluating atmosphere environment, it is necessary to estimate its characteristics all over the major cities in Korea Peninsula. We have begun collecting clearness index data since 1982 at 16 different cities in South Korea and estimated using empirical forecasting models at 21 different stations over the North Korea from 1982 to 2008. This considerable effort has been made for constructing a standard value from measured data at each city. The new clearness data for global-dimming analysis will be extensively used by evaluating atmospheric environment as well as by solar PV application system designer or users. From the results, we can conclude that. 1) Yearly mean 63.5 % of the atmospheric clearness index was evaluated for clear day all over the 37 cities in Korea Peninsula, 2) Clear day's atmospheric clearness index of spring and summer were 64.6% and 64.8%, and for fall and winter their values were 63.3% and 61.3% respectively in Korea Peninsula.

치매 예방 프로그램 현황 및 분석 -주요 5개 도시 중심으로- (Analysis and Current State of Dementia Prevention Program -Focused on Five Major Cities-)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the status of the dementia prevention programs, dementia support centers, and elderly welfare centers in major metropolitan cities to acquire data for future program development and dissemination and the specialization of dementia prevention personnel. Methods: Data were gathered through internet surveys and telephone questionnaires from 15 special demented elderly care centers and elderly welfare centers registered in five metropolitan cities from June 27 to Oct 25, 2016. Results: Dementia care programs were available at 15 centers. Seoul City was running the most diverse dementia programs, and all five cities were spending a significant amount of time on the cognitive therapy program within several dementia programs. In addition, many social workers hosted the program and the frequency of social welfare work was three times a week. Conclusion: To increase the dementia prevention policies' efficiency, an understanding of dementia has already been established. Experts who can provide client-centered, problem-solving programs will play the role of physical therapists and occupational therapists. However, more research is needed.

남북한간 정기항공편 운항의 경제성 연구;서울-북경 항공편의 부분적 평양경유 운항을 가정한 항공여행자 선호도 분석을 중심으로 (A study on the Economies of Launching Regular Air Service Between South Korea and North Korea;Based on the Analysis of Air Passenger's Preference of air services from Seoul to Beijing via Pyung Yang)

  • This study focuses on the economies of launching regular air services between capital cities of South Korea and North Korea. The demand for traveling between these two cities is too small to justify scheduled air service. However, it may be possible to provide regular air service by utilizing via flight of incumbent Seoul-Beijing flights. There are numerous flight services between Seoul and Beijing and we may allow some of the Seoul-Beijing flights to stop by Pyung Yang for commercial traffic handling. This study tries to find the optimal discount rate which passengers traveling between Seoul and Beijing via Pyung Yang, the idea is reasonable considering the inconvenience of stopping at Pyung Yang. The Stated Preference Techniques are applied for the study. The required data were collected through interviews of passengers traveling from Seoul to Beijing. The major variables that are considered in flight choice are air fare, flying time, and flight frequency. The relative importance of these major variables is estimated by the logit models calibrated with stated preference data.
