This paper presents a hybrid (i.e., integrated passive-active) system for seismic response control of a cable-stayed bridge. Because multiple control devices are operating, a hybrid control system could alleviate some of the restrictions and limitations that exist when each system is acting alone. Lead rubber bearings are used as passive control devices to reduce the earthquake-induced forces in the bridge and hydraulic actuators are used as active control devices to further reduce the bridge responses, especially deck displacements. In the proposed hybrid control system, a linear quadratic Gaussian control algorithm is adopted as a primary controller. In addition, a secondary bang-bang type (i.e., on-off type) controller according to the responses of lead rubber bearings is considered to increase the controller robustness. Numerical simulation results show that control performances of the hybrid control system are superior to those of the passive control system and slightly better than those of the fully active control system. Furthermore, it is verified that the hybrid control system with a bang-bang type controller is more robust for stiffness perturbation than the active controller with μ-synthesis method and there are no signs of instability in the overall system whereas the active control system with linear quadratic Gaussian algorithm shows instabilities in the perturbed system. Therefore, the proposed hybrid protective system could effectively be used to seismically excited cable-stayed bridges.

Since the dynamic behaviors of liquid storage tanks on flexible soil are significantly influenced by the fluid-structure-soil interaction (FSSI), its effects must be rigorously considered for accurate earthquake analysis and seismic design of the storage system. In this study, dynamic analysis is performed for a rectangular liquid storage tank on flexible soil, and its dynamic characteristics are examined by rigorously considering the effects of FSSI. The hydrodynamic force and the interaction force between the structure and soil are evaluated using the finite-element approach. In the evaluations, mid-point integrated finite elements and viscous dampers are considered for energy radiation into the infinite soil. The effective earthquake force is then obtained from free-field analysis. It is thus demonstrated that the earthquake responses of the rectangular liquid storage tank on flexible soil are significantly influenced by the FSSI.

An analysis considering the fluid-structure interaction is required to strictly evaluate the seismic behavior of facilities such as, environmental facilities and dams, that store fluids. Specifically, in the case of an infinite domain in the upstream direction, such as a dam-reservoir system, this should be carefully considered. In this study, we proposed a practical numerical model for both wave propagation and fluid-structure interaction analyses of an infinite domain, for a system with a semi-infinite domain such as a dam-reservoir system. This method was applicable to the time domain, and enabled accurate boundary analysis. For an infinite fluid domain, a small number of mid-point integrated acoustic finite elements were applied instead of a general acoustic finite element, and a viscous boundary was imposed on the outermost boundary. The validity and accuracy of the proposed method were secured by comparing analytic solutions of a reservoir having infinite domain, with the parametric analysis results, for the number of elements and the size of the modeling region. Furthermore, the proposed method was compared with other fluid-structure interaction methods using additional mass.

Optimal design method of nonlinear damping system for seismic response control of adjacent structures is studied in this paper. The objective functions of the optimal design are defined by structural response and total amount of the dampers. In order to obtain a solution minimizing two mutually conflicting objective functions simultaneously, multi-objective optimization technique based on genetic algorithm is adopted. In addition, stochastic linearization method is embedded into the multi-objective framework to efficiently estimate the seismic responses of the adjacent structures interconnected by nonlinear hysteretic dampers without performing nonlinear time-history analyses. As a numerical example to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed technique, 20-story and 10-story buildings are considered and MR dampers of which hysteretic behaviors vary with the magnitude of the input voltage are considered as nonlinear hysteretic damper interconnecting two adjacent buildings. The proposed approach can provide the optimal number and capacities of the MR dampers, which turned out to be more economical than the uniform distribution system while maintaining similar control performance. The proposed damper system is verified to show more stable performance in terms of the pounding probability between two adjacent buildings. The applicability of the proposed method to the design problem for optimally placing semi-active control system is examined as well.

The country has built and is operating IT-based integrated management system for efficient management of national highway tunnels used publicly these days. Since this system doesn't include the management function on earthquakes, it is impossible to promptly respond to earthquakes and to select the sections requiring seismic reinforcement. Tunnels designed and constructed after 1999 have been subjected to seismic design for an earthquake with a return period 1000 years. Therefore, it is necessary to evaluate the stability of structures in case of earthquakes more than this. Since it takes a lot of time to perform the stability evaluation on various earthquake magnitudes, a method that can easily evaluate earthquakes is needed. In this paper, the empirical simplification method that can easily evaluate the earthquake was proposed. For this, the study calculated ground displacement by conducting one-dimensional ground response analysis, and examined the safety of tunnels in the event of occurrence of an earthquake using two means of response displacement method (analytics and numerical analysis).
This paper introduces the current status of high-rise building design in Japan, with reference to some recent projects. Firstly, the design approval system and procedures for high-rise buildings and structures in Japan are introduced. Then, performance-based wind-resistant design of a 300 m-high building, Abeno Harukas, is introduced, where building configuration, superstructure systems and various damping devices are sophisticatedly integrated to ensure a higher level of safety and comfort against wind actions. Next, design of a 213 m-high building is introduced with special attention to habitability against the wind-induced horizontal motion. Finally, performance-based wind-resistant design of a 634 m-high tower, Tokyo Sky Tree, is introduced. For this structure, the core column system was adopted to satisfy the strict design requirements due to the severest level of seismic excitations and wind actions.

An integrated database(DB) system was developed to manage the marine geological data and geophysical data acquired from around the Korean peninsula from 2009 to 2013. Geological data such as size analysis data, columnar section images, X-ray images, heavy metal data, and organic carbon data of sediment samples, were collected in the form of text files, excel files, PDF files and image files. Geophysical data such as seismic data, magnetic data, and gravity data were gathered in the form of SEG-Y binary files, image files and text files. We collected scientific data from research projects funded by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, data produced by domestic marine organizations, and public data provided by foreign organizations. All the collected data were validated manually and stored in the archive DB according to data processing procedures. A geographic information system was developed to manage the spatial information and provide data effectively using the map interface. Geographic information system(GIS) software was used to import the position data from text files, manipulate spatial data, and produce shape files. A GIS DB was set up using the Oracle database system and ArcGIS spatial data engine. A client/server GIS application was developed to support data search, data provision, and visualization of scientific data. It provided complex search functions and on-the-fly visualization using ChartFX and specially developed programs. The system is currently being maintained and newly collected data is added to the DB system every year.

The stability and efficiency of structural control systems depend on the accuracy of mathematical model of the system to be controlled. In this study, state equation models of a small scale test structure and an AMD(active mass damper) are obtained separately using OKID(observer/Kalman filter identification) which is a time domain system identification method. The test structure with each floor acceleration as outputs is identified for two inputs - the ground acceleration and the acceleration of the moving mass of AMD relative to the installation floor - individually and the two identified state equation models are integrated into one by model reduction method. The AMD is identified with the motor control signal as an input and the relative acceleration of the moving mass as an output, and it is shown that the identified model has large damping ratio and phase shift. The transfer functions and the time histories reconstructed from the identified models of the test model and the AMD match well with those measured from the experiment.

An automated dynamic structural analysis module stands as a crucial element within a structural integrated mitigation system. This module must deliver prompt real-time responses to enable timely actions, such as evacuation or warnings, in response to the severity posed by the structural system. The finite element method, a widely adopted approximate structural analysis approach globally, owes its popularity in part to its user-friendly nature. However, the computational efficiency and accuracy of results depend on the user-provided finite element mesh, with the number of elements and their quality playing pivotal roles. This paper introduces a computationally efficient adaptive mesh generation scheme that optimally combines the h-method of node movement and the r-method of element division for mesh refinement. Adaptive mesh generation schemes automatically create finite element meshes, and in this case, representative strain values for a given mesh are employed for error estimates. When applied to dynamic problems analyzed in the time domain, meshes need to be modified at each time step, considering a few hundred or thousand steps. The algorithm's specifics are demonstrated through a standard cantilever beam example subjected to a concentrated load at the free end. Additionally, a portal frame example showcases the generation of various robust meshes. These examples illustrate the adaptive algorithm's capability to produce robust meshes, ensuring reasonable accuracy and efficient computing time. Moreover, the study highlights the potential for the scheme's effective application in complex structural dynamic problems, such as those subjected to seismic or erratic wind loads. It also emphasizes its suitability for general nonlinear analysis problems, establishing the versatility and reliability of the proposed adaptive mesh generation scheme.
Earthquake Hazard Mitigation Law was activated into force on March 2009. By the law, the obligation to monitor the effect of earthquake on the facilities was extended to many organizations such as gas company and local governments. Based on the estimation of National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the number of free-surface acceleration stations would be expanded to more than 400. The advent of internet protocol and the more simplified operation have allowed the quick and easy installation of seismic stations. In addition, the dynamic range of seismic instruments has been continuously improved enough to evaluate damage intensity and to alert alarm directly for earthquake hazard mitigation. For direct visualization of damage intensity and area, Real Time Intensity COlor Mapping (RTICOM) is explained in detail. RTICOM would be used to retrieve the essential information for damage evaluation, Peak Ground Acceleration (PGA). Destructive earthquake damage is usually due to surface waves which just follow S wave. The peak amplitude of surface wave would be pre-estimated from the amplitude and frequency content of first arrival P wave. Earthquake Early Warning (EEW) system is conventionally defined to estimate local magnitude from P wave. The status of EEW is reviewed and the application of EEW to Odesan earthquake is exampled with ShakeMap in order to make clear its appearance. In the sense of rapidity, the earthquake announcement of Korea Meteorological Agency (KMA) might be dramatically improved by the adaption of EEW. In order to realize hazard mitigation, EEW should be applied to the local crucial facilities such as nuclear power plants and fragile semi-conduct plant. The distributed EEW is introduced with the application example of Uljin earthquake. Not only Nation-wide but also locally distributed EEW applications, all relevant information is needed to be shared in real time. The plan of extension of Korea Integrated Seismic System (KISS) is briefly explained in order to future cooperation of data sharing and utilization.
