The KSTAR(Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research) superconducting magnet system consist of 16 TF(Toroidal Field) and 14 PF(Poloidal Field) coils. Internally-cooled cabled superconductors will be used for the magnet system. The magnet system adopt a superconducting CICC (Cable-In-Conduit Conductor) type. The KSTAR PF 6, 7 CICCs use NbTi Superconducting cable with stainless steel 316LN conduit while the other PF CICC use Incoloy 908 conduit. For the fabrication of PF CICC, superconducting cables have been fabricated and the cable has the diameter of 22.3mm. A continuous CICC jacketing system is developed for the CICC jacketing and the jacketing system uses the tube-mill process, which consists of forming, welding, sizing and squaring procedures. The cabling and the jacketing process is described. The welding condition and design specification of CICCs are also discussed. The fabrication results including the geometrical specification and the void fraction will be discussed.
The quench detection system of the KSTAR (Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research) primarily uses the resistive voltage measurement due to a quench. This method is to detect the resistive voltage generated by a quench, which is continuously maintained above the preset voltage threshold for a given holding time. As the KSTAR PF (Poloidal Field) coils are operated in the pulse current mode, the large inductive voltages are generated. Therefore the voltage threshold and the quench holding time should be determined by considering both the inductive voltages measured during the operation, and the maximum conductor temperature rise through the quench analysis. In this paper, the compensation methods for minimizing the inductive voltages are presented for the KSTAR PF coils. The quench hot spot analysis of the PF coils was carried out by the analytical and numerical methods for determining the proper values of the quench voltage threshold and the allowable quench protection delay time.
Since the strand-to-strand type joint far CICC (Cable-In-Conduit Conductor) is small in size and has low DC resistance, it is expected to be useful type fur a superconducting magnet system which had a compact structure like the KSTAR (Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research) coil system. The DC resistance is changed according to the distribution patterns of strands in cables connected together in the joint. A commercial code was used for the calculation of the DC resistance. With the decrease of outer diameter of the Joint, Which means the increase of strand volume fraction in the joint, the calculated DC resistance decrease rapidly and non-lineally. The variation of resistance depends mainly on the volume fraction of solder which has higher resistivity than copper. The resistance decrease inversely with the increase of the length of the joint. The resistance increase with increase of number of triplets in each stack contacted with that of another terminal cable. In case of the strand-to-strand joint that has 62mm of outer diameter, 52mm of inner diameter, 100mm of overlap length, and four triplets in each stack, the calculated DC resistance is less than 1 n-Ohm.
Vacuum vessel of the KSTAR(Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research) tokamak is a fully welded structure with D-shaped cross-section. According to the requirements of the physics design, sixteen horizontal ports, sixteen slanted ports, sixteen baking and cooling ports, and twenty-four top and bottom vertical ports are designed for the diagnostics, plasma heating, vacuum pumping, and baking and cooling. Bellows on these ports are used for flexible components to absorb the relative displacement due to the vacuum vessel thermal expansion and the electromagnetic force between the vacuum vessel and the cryostat ports. Fatigue strength evaluation was performed to decide the dimension of the bellows. In order to assure the quality of the bellows, a prototype bellows for the neutral beam injection port has been fabricated and tested prior to main fabrication. It was conformed that the prototype bellows has sufficient fatigue strength and vacuum reliability in the expected load conditions.

The superconducting coil system is one of the most important components in Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research (KSTAR), which has been operated since 2008. $Nb_3Sn$ and NbTi superconductors are being used for cable-in-conduit conductors (CICCs) of the KSTAR toroidal field (TF) and poloidal field (PF) coils. The CICCs are cooled by forced-flow supercritical helium about 4.5 K. The temperature, pressure and mass flow rate of the supercritical helium in the CICCs are interacting with each other during the operation of the coils. The complicate behaviors of the supercritical helium have an effect on the operation and the efficiency of the helium refrigeration system (HRS) by means of, for instance, pressure drop. The hydraulic characteristics of the supercritical helium have been monitored while the TF coils have stably achieved the full current of 35 kA. In other hands, the PF coils have been operated with various pulsed or bipolar mode, so the drastic changes happen in view of hydraulics. The heat load including AC loss on the coils has been analyzed according to the measurement. These activities are important to estimate the temperature margin in various PF operation conditions. In this paper, the latest hydraulic behaviors of PF coils during KSTAR operation are presented.
The discharge characteristics of a prototype ion source was investigated, which was developed and upgraded for the NBI (Neutral Beam Injection) heating system of KSTAR (Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research). The ion source was designed for the arc discharge of magnetic bucket chamber with multi-pole cusp fields. The ion source was discharged by the emission-limited mode with the control of filament heating voltage. The maximum ion density was 4 times larger than the previous discharge controlled by a space-charge-limited mode with fully heated filament. The plasma (ion) density and arc current were proportional to the filament voltage, but the discharge efficiency was inversely proportional to the operating pressure of hydrogen gas. The maximum ion density and arc current were obtained with constant arc voltage ($80{\sim}100V$), as $8{\times}10^{11}cm^{-3}$ and 1200 A, respectively. The estimated maximum beam current was about 35 A, extracted by the accelerating voltage of 80kV.
After more than 10 years construction, KSTAR (Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research) had finally completed its assembly in June 2007, and then achieved the goal of first-plasma in July 2008 through the four month's commissioning. KSTAR was constructed with fully superconducting magnets with material of $Nb_3Sn$ and NbTi, and their operation temperatures are maintained below 4.5K by the help of Helium Refrigerator System. During the first-plasma operation, plasmas of maximum current of 133kA and maximum pulse width of 865ms were obtained. The KSTAR Integrated Control System (KICS) has successfully fulfilled its missions of surveillance, device operation, machine protection interlock, and data acquisition and management. These and more were all KSTAR commissioning requirements. For reliable and safe operation of KSTAR, 17 local control systems were developed. Those systems must be integrated into the logically single control system, and operate regardless of their platforms and location installed. In order to meet these requirements, KICS was developed as a network-based distributed system and adopted a new framework, named as EPICS (Experimental Physics and Industrial Control System). Also, KICS has some features in KSTAR operation. It performs not only 24 hour continuous plant operation, but the shot-based real-time feedback control by exchanging the initiatives of operation between a central controller and a plasma control system in accordance with the operation sequence. For the diagnosis and analysis of plasma, 11 types of diagnostic system were implemented in KSTAR, and the acquired data from them were archived using MDSpius (Model Driven System), which is widely used in data management of fusion control systems. This paper will cover the design and implementation of the KSTAR integrated control system and the data management and visualization systems. Commissioning results will be introduced in brief.
The KSTAR (Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research) prototype TF (Toroidal Field) coil was tested in the superconducting coil test facility in KBSI (Korea basic Science Institute). The test was divided into several campaigns according to the objectives. The objectives of the first campaign were to cool the coil into operating temperature and to find any defect in the coil such as cold leaks. From the results of the first campaign, which was carried out during Jan. 2003, any defect in the TF prototype coil was not found. At the second campaign, the large-current charging experiment was one of the major issues, and was carried out during Aug. 2003 In this paper, the test preparation, and the test results of the second campaign were presented.
The NBI (Neutral BGeam Injection) System for the Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research (KSTAR) is composed of ion sources, neutralizers, bending magnets, ion dumps, and calorimeter. The vacuum chamber, in which all of the beam line components are enclosed, is composed of differential pumping system for the effective transfer of the neutral beams. The needed pumping speeds of each of the divided vacuum chamber and the optimized gas flow rate ot the neutralizer were calculated with the help of the particle balance equations. The minimum gas flow rate to the ion sources for producing needed beam current (120kV, 65A, 78MW), the pressure distributions in the vacuum chamber for minimizing re-ionization loss, and the beam loss rate on the beam line components were used as the input in the calculation. Also the scenario for short pulse operation was determined by analysing the time dependent equations. It showed that beam extraction during less than 0.5 sec could be made only with TMP.
One of the principal components of the KSTAR (Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research) tokamak structure is the vacuum vessel, which acts as the high vacuum boundary for the plasma and also provides the structural support for internal components. Hyundai Heavy Industries Inc. has performed the engineering design of the vacuum vessel. Here the overall configuration of the KSTAR vacuum vessel was briefly described and then the design methodology and the analysis results were presented. The vacuum vessel consists of double walls, several ports, leaf spring style supports. Double walls are separated by reinforcing ribs and filled with baking/shielding water. The overall external dimensions of the main body are 3.39 m high, 1.11 m inner radius, 2.99 m outer radius, and made of SA240-316LN. The vacuum vessel was designed to be capable of achieving the base pressure of $1\times10^{-8}$ Torr, and also to be structurally capable of sustaining the vacuum pressure, the electromagnetic and thermal loads during plasma disruption and bakeout, respectively. The vacuum vessel will be baked out maximum $150^{\circ}C$ by hot pressurized water through the channels formed between double walls and the reinforcing ribs. A 3-D temperature distribution and the resulting thermal loads in the vessel were calculated during bakeout. It was found that the vacuum vessel and its supports were structurally rigid based on the thermal stress analysis. The maximum electromagnetic loads on the vacuum vessel induced by eddy and halo currents resulting from the engineering plasma radial and vertical disruption scenarios have been estimated. The stress analyses have been performed based on these electromagnetic loads and the resulting stresses at he critical locations of the vacuum vessel were within the allowable stresses.
