Six phytal harpacticoid species of the genus porcellidium are recorded from 22 algal species in the eastern (Sea of Japan) and southern (Korea Strait) coast of Korea. Among these six species, Porcellidium ofunatense Harris and Iwasaki and Porcellidium gamoi(Harris and Iwasaki) are recorded as new to Korean fauna. Other four species are described as new to science: Porcellidium bipartitum n. sp. found from a single algal species, Procellidium wandoensis n. sp. from ten algal species, Porcellidium acutum n. sp. from five algal species, and Porcellidium brevlcacum n. sp. from two algal species. It is found that the associations between the species of Porcellidium and macroalgae reveal weak specificities.
The purpose of this article is to understand the present situation of energy maritime logistics and to suggest a safe way for maritime transportation. In addition, this study is going to assess the risk of maritime transport of energy and propose alternatives in terms of strategy and policy. We examine the security of the Strait of Hormuz, near the east coast of Somalia, the Gulf of Aden and the Strait of Malacca where the Korean tankers pass through and discuss countermeasures responding to a variety of dangerous situations. This article also provides plans for stable supply of energy in case of Korea peninsula crisis and emphasizes the need of establishing cooperation with neighbor countries.
Several species of the genus Pseudo-nitzschia produce the neurotoxin domoic acid (DA) known to be responsible for amnesic shellfish poisoning. Recently off the coast of Geomundo and in Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of Korea Strait, P. cf. brasiliana predominated in summer, 2010. As P. cf. brasiliana was new to Korea, we describe the morphological characteristics of the species. It was observed that cells were linear to lanceolate in valve and girdle view, $51{\sim}76{\mu}m$ long and $1.9{\sim}2.6{\mu}m$ wide. In the central part a large interspace was absent. The number of fibulae and striae in $10{\mu}m$ were 30~37 and 31~37. Each stria contained 2~3 rows of poroids, with 10 to 14 poroids in $1{\mu}m$ length. These morphological features of P. cf. brasiliana were found to be similar with the P. brasiliana, except with the fact that P. cf. brasiliana carred more numbers of fibulae/striae in $10{\mu}m$ and poroids in $1{\mu}m$. Based on our observation, we suggest that P. cf. brasiliana is a newly identified Pseudo-nitzschia species or a variety of P. brasiliana.

Spatio-temporal distributions of nighttime fishing fleet are descirbed with the aid of geographic information system(GIS) technology in the East/Japan Sea, using daily mean composite images of the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program(DMSP) /Operational Linescan System(OLS) in 1993. We selected a study area from $30^{\circ} N to 44^{\circ} N in latitude and from 124^{\circ} E to 142^{\circ}$ E in longitude in order to describe the monthly and seasonal changes of nighttime fishing fleet. The GIS software package Image Analyst (ArcView 3) are used to analyze spatio-temporal distributions of fishing nut. And the OLS images of nighttime visible band provide useful information about the spatio-temporal distribution of the fishing nut. Density areas of nighttime fishing fleet are around Tsushima/korea Strait. the east coast of the Korea Peninsula, the coast of Honshu, and around Yamato Bank.
The current system of the East China Sea, a marginal sea in the northwest Pacific, has a seasonal variation. The Changjiang Diluted Water, Chinese coastal water in the East China Sea, has different seasonal paths. It flows southward along the Chinese coast within a narrow band in winter and does northeastward the Korea/Tsushima Strait in summer, which has been a subject to many researchers. In particular, low salinity in the South Sea of Korea in 1996 and 1998 was in discord with the Changjiang River discharge and the Changjiang Diluted Water seems to play an important role in occurrence of red tide in the South Sea of Korea in 1997 and on the contrary, disappearance in the next year. These facts suggested that the Changjiang Diluted Water does not flow along the same path in every summer. According to the analyses for path of the Changjiang Diluted Water using ocean color images by SeaWiFS and salinity observations by shipboard CTD in August for recent years, the Changjiang Diluted Water in summer flowed within the range of direction from southeastward to north-northeastward anticlockwise. However, the Changjiang Diluted Water flowed northeastward toward Jeju Island of Korea for the most part. It is necessary to examine the influence of major factors on path variability of the CDW in summer such as surface wind, the Changjiang River discharge and background current.
Harmful dinoflagellate Cochlodinium polykrikoides blooms have been frequently occurred in coastal areas of the East Sea since 1995. We compared the oceanic conditions in years 1995, 2001 and 2003 when the C. polykrikoides bloom was strong, and in years 1998 and 2004 when the C. polykrikoides bloom was not appeared. We studied temporal and spatial variation of upwelling and geostrophic currents on the western channel of Korean Strait, an entrance of the East Sea. The period and occurrence area of C. polykrikoides bloom was depended on variation of upwelling in summer. In the distributions of geostrophic current, southward current was dominant near the coast in August, 1998 and 2000. Whereas northward current was dominant near and off the coast in August, 1995 and 2003 which the C. polykrikoides bloom was strong. When compared dominant phytoplankton of the coastal areas in each year, Kuroshio indicator species Proboscia alata and Chaetoceros affine were dominant, respectively, in 2001 and 2003 at every stations. However, the dominant species was variable at each coastal area in 1998 and 2000. In 2003, the abundance of Sagitta elegans which is known as the cold water indicator was low, but the abundance of S. enflata, warm water indicator, was very high in Gangneung compared to Sokcho. It seemed that the distribution of S. elegans is restricted by strong warm water current. In conclusion, it was estimated that the distribution of C. polykrikoides bloom in the coastal area of the East Sea was closely related with the strength of East Korea Warm Current and upwelling.

We examined the relationship between the 50m temperature estimated by remote sensing sea surface temperature (SST) and fishing ground (squid fishing ground) detected by nighttime visible channel defense meteorological satellite program (DMSP) I operational linescan system (OLS) images in the East/Japan Sea during 1993-2000. The results are as follows: The numbers of nighttime fishing boat were distributed the highest in October, and the lowest in April during this study. A nighttime fishing grounds have concentrated in the East Korea Warm Current region, coastal regions of Honshu Island, and Polar front region. Fishing grounds have distributed $11-18^{\circ}C$ of estimated 50m temperature from the satellite data. Relationship between estimated 50m temperature and the distributed fisheries boats showed that the north boundaries of fishing grounds have distributed the temperature of below $12^{\circ}C$ from 1996 to 2000 and that of $13-15^{\circ}C$ during 1993-1995 and 1997-1999. Stable fishing grounds appeared near the Korea/Tsushima Strait from January to March. The center of fishing grounds in spring (April-Jun) have moved to the northward than that in winter, and variations appeared largely in winter. In summer (July-September), center of fishing grounds have formed near the Uleung Island in the south east coast of Korea, and in autumn maximum fishing ground appeared in October, the fishing ground southward from November.
Field observation and numerical experiments with a two-dimensional depth-integrated model were undertaken in order to investigate some of the effects on the flow structure resulting from the construction of a bridge connecting Kohung Peninsula and the Narodo Islands on the southern coast of Korea. Tidal currents passing through the straits between the Narodo Islands showed that, although the phase lagged one hour behind that passing through the strait between Kohung Peninsula and Naenarodo Island, it still kept strong flows of more than 80cm/sec near the bottom. The seawater temperature and salinity within the study area seemed to be higher southward but uniform vertically. The results of the drogue experiments in the straits between the Narodo Islands showed that the drogues moved northward of Sayangdo in the early part of the flood tide, but southward in the late part of the flood tide and finally stopped a mile from the east coast of Surakdo. On the other hand, the numerical computation showed that the flow structures after construction of the bridge piers were basically in line with those before construction of the bridge piers, except for the slight variations of velocities in the vicinity of the bridge piers. A large scale clockwise circulation has been confirmed in the south area of Namsungri of Kohung Peninsula from the computational results of tide-induced residual currents. Referring to these computational results, the impact category on the flow structures due to the bridge piers construction has been estimated to be within around 2km. The results were in good agreement with the field observations.

The importance of scientific education on accurate oceanic currents and circulation has been increasingly addressed because the currents have played a significant role in climate change and global energy balance. The objectives of this study are to analyze errors of the oceanic current maps in the textbooks, to discuss a variety of error sources, to suggest how to produce a unified oceanic current map of the East Sea for the students. Twenty-seven textbooks based on the 7th National Curriculum were analyzed and quantitatively investigated on the characteristics of the current maps by comparing with both the previous literature and up-to-date scientific knowledge. All the maps in the textbooks with different mappings were converted to digitalized image data with Mercator mapping using geolocation information. Detailed analysis were performed to investigate the patterns of the Tsushima Warm Current (TWC) in the Korea Strait, to examine how closely the nearshore branch of the TWC flows along the Japanese coast, to scrutinize the features of the offshore branch of the TWC south of the subpolar front in the East Sea, to quantitatively investigate the northern range of the northward-propagating East Korea Warm Current and its latitude turning to the east, and lastly to examine the outflow of the TWC near the Tsugaru Strait and the Soya Strait. In addition, the origins, southern limits, and distances from the coast of the Liman Current and the North Korea Cold Current were analyzed. Other erroneous expressions of the currents in the textbooks were presented. These analyses revealed the problems in the present current maps of the textbooks, which might lead the students to misconception. This study also addressed a necessity in a bridge between scientists with up-to-date scientific results and educators who needed educational materials.
To understand the scales of the spatial distribution and temporal duration of the subsurface chlorophyll-a maximum (SCM) observed in the Ulleung Basin of the East Sea, we analyzed physical and chemical data collected during the East Asian Seas Time-series-I (EAST-I) program. The SCM layer occurred at several observation lines from the Korea Strait to $37.9^{\circ}N$ in the Ulleung Basin during August of 2008 and 2011. At each observation line, the SCM layer extended from the coast to about 200 km off the coast. The SCM layer was observed between 30 and 40 m depth in the Ulleung Basin as well as in the northwestern Japan Basin along $132.3^{\circ}E$ from $38^{\circ}N$ to $42.3^{\circ}N$ during July 2009, and was observed around 50 m depth in the northeastern Japan Basin ($135-140^{\circ}E$ and $40-45^{\circ}N$) during July 2010. From these observed features, we hypothesize that the SCM layer observed in the Ulleung Basin may exist in most of the East Sea and may last for at least half-year (from the early May to late October). The nutrient supply mechanism for prolonged the SCM layer in the East Sea was not known, but it may be closely related to the horizontal advection of the nutrient rich and low oxygen waters observed in the Korea Strait between a 50 m depth to near the bottom. The prolonged development of the SCM layer in the Ulleung Basin may result in high primary production and would also be responsible for the high organic carbon content observed in the surface sediment of the region.
