Purpose: Since the establishment of Korea Society for the Study of Hospital Architecture, Korea Institute of Healthcare Architecture have carried out various activities to improve the level of healthcare architecture in Korea. Despite of more diverse activities than the beginning, the history and activities of early days of the Society and Institute could be forgotten and omitted. So this paper aims to describe accurately the process of establishment of Korea Society for the Study of Hospital Architecture and Korea Institute of Healthcare Architecture and the activities of the Society and Institute. Methods: Publications and documents issued by Korea Society for the Study of Hospital Architecture and Korea Institute of Healthcare Architecture have been surveyed. And to identify the unwritten activities, personal memo and interviews were also used. Results: The result of this study can be summarized into two points. The first one is that some of the unwritten and uncertain history and activities of the beginning of the KIHA could be identified. The second one is that not also the activities of Korea Society for the Study of Hospital Architecture and Korea Institute of Healthcare Architecture but the activities prior to the Society for the Study could be described. Implications: This research could be the basic data to arrange the history and activities of KIHA.

The purpose of this study was to propose and estimate the architectural planning of general hospital in Korea, for the aged society in the near future. Average life expectancy of Koreans has been lengthened and the percentage of the aged populations is expected to be increased sharply. Therefore, the social problems for the aged occur in various levels, especially in healthcare facilities and medical system due to the weak health conditions of the aged. These problems will become more serious in the near future. However, the architectural planning of general hospital in Korea has not been prepared for the aged society yet. The results of this study were as follows the ward of general hospital should be divided into acute and geriatric wards because of the characteristics of geriatric diseases.

The purpose of this study is to suggest the direction of the specialized dementia hospital which can confront in the old age society of Korea changing quickly. We need to make the architectural planning guide including the form determining factors which is useful for the domestic dementia hospital. The factors can be extracted from a database by analysing and investigating the documents of the developed nations equips the excellent dementia hospital. The result of this study is like this : at first, it is very important that the patient has to have the feeling of comfort and familiarity through the external space leads a direct participation. Second, the interior space must have the composition for the patients primarily. So, this research can be used the basic document of the dementia hospital planning.

Purpose: This study shows a changing tendency of Japanese psychiatric hospitals, presenting "Visions in Reform of Mental Health and Medical Welfare", changed to "Hospitalized Medical Treatment to Living in the Community" and reducing the number of beds since 2004. Methods: This study uses a documentary survey, especially Jananese "Visions in Reform of Mental Health and Medical Welfare System" and a field survey on hospital built for early treatment and return to society after 2004. Results: Change tendencies of psychiatric hospitals are 1) diversification of isolation room and ward, 2) cluster of patient's room, 3) phased organization of space, 4)individualization. Implication: This study will be an important data for researching plan of Korea psychiatric hospital which needs to change by global tendency.

Rehabilitation medicine is an area which tries to help people who have physical inconvenience in everyday activities to live like healthy people as much as possible by training programs. As society gets more advanced and as the standard of living continuously rises, the need of the "Rehabilitation medicine" is also increasing. Also as we are entering into the aging society, especially geriatric rehabilitation medicine is getting more and more attention as a method to maintain the healthy lives of the elders. However, the standards related to medical care space for rehabilitation medicine is not thoroughly prepared. Although requirement for geriatric hospital is increasing, the standard of geriatric hospital is not following up to regulate them properly. Therefore, in this study, I will propose a 'suitable planning' needed in geriatric rehabilitation by analyzing the rehabilitation sections of 5 general hospitals and 1 geriatric hospital.

This study proposes a new paradigm hospital information system through the nursing classification system and design of the HL7 clinical document architecture (Health Level Seven CDA) for information-sharing among various healthcare institutions. Nursing information CDA are included coding systems of nursing diagnosis, nursing intervention, nursing activity and outcomes. And, we have developed CDA generator for active generation of XML document. This study aims to facilitate the optimum care by providing health information required for individuals to nursing specialists in real-time, to help improvements in health, to improve the quality of productive life. This study has the following significance. First, an expansion and redefining process conducted, founded on the HL7 clinical document architecture and reference information model, to apply international standards to Korean contexts. Second, we propose a next-generation web based hospital information system that is based on the clinical document architecture. In conclusion, the study of the clinical document architecture will include an electronic health record (EHR) and a clinical data repository (CDR), and also make possible healthcare information-sharing among various healthcare institutions.

As we make every effort to improve our health, the needs and interests of the rehabilitation medicine is increasing. And as society gets more advanced and as the quality of life become higher, rehabilitation department will be important for general hospital and we need the certain guidelines about it. In this study, selected 8 general hospitals in the metropolitan area are analyzed by the analysis of drawings and comparison. The important architectural planning of rehabilitation department are the connection with orthopedics and neurosurgery and the position for convenience approach. Rehabilitation department has 0.63~1.07% of general hospital area. And the rehabilitation department is divided into four branches - medical service space, office space, public space and support space. As the number of programs in the rehabilitation department is increasing, the planning will be considered for the flexible use. And this study proposed the programs, necessary spaces, space composition and basic planning of "rehabilitation department".

Korea is entered to the aging society with 21C. Also it is forecast we will enter in aging society quickly. for 5 years there are some growth in facility at least 2~3 times but our society needs more. But this quantitative growth is worried about less quality. That's why we needs more research about the facility for an geriatrics hospital. The people who suffered from senile disease needs more treatment days in the ward of geriatric hospital. so we have to consider about better condition in ward of geriatrics than in general. Better environment for eldery is included not only the ward space but also the corridor and the dayroom. This study which it performed to improve their habitability is researched on public space. and this reserch deal with general feature against a public space in the ward of geriatric, and investigate 2 facility for divede the the general feature of the space. and this investigate is recorded according to behavior of patients. It can find us which factor of the space is prefered by them.

The current hospital buildings try to support the functional needs and the social requests that is proper for so fast changes of the society. The historical changes of the hospital is affected by many direct or indirect factors as same as the societal changes. The factors of the changes are so various as the aspect of the disease, the development of medical care, the medical system, the medical facility, the social demands and so on. This thesis aims to investigate the historical traces of the ancient hospital wards through factors related to the changes therefor it will be known what factors affected to the changes of the ancient historical hospital wards. Finally it will be not only presupposed a proper counterproposal to the changes of a future hospital scope, but it will be also known the history of the hospital wards.

Nowadays, Korean society is quickly transforming into an aging society. There are lots of problems resulting from old aged society. First of all, in the case of medical service, it is an urgent task to find out what is the most proper care for the elderly in order to reduce medical expenses. It can be said that the geriatric hospital has to be designed to give adequate medical service to the elderly. However, it is hard to find out what the differences is between the general hospital and the geriatric hospital. Especially, the plan of the patient room has to reflect thoughtful consideration relating to characteristics of the elderly due to the fact that there is a close connection between the patient room and residence. Therefore this study aims to suggest the guideline and the plan of the patient room for the elderly.
