  • Several species of Gyromitra are highly poisonous when consumed raw the presence of gyromitrin. In this study, Gyromitra specimens deposited in the Korea National Arboretum were re-examined and subjected to molecular sequence analysis. G. gigas, G. aff. perlata, and G. tianshanensis were identified based on their morphological features and molecular phylogenetic analysis for the first time in Korea. Furthermore, internal transcribed spacer and 28S rRNA sequences of G. esculenta and G. infula were analyzed to confirm their phylogeny.

  • The complete chloroplast genome (cp genome) sequence of Clematis calcicola J. S. Kim (Ranunculaceae) is 159,655 bp in length. It consists of large (79,451 bp) and small (18,126 bp) single-copy regions and a pair of identical inverted repeats (31,039 bp). The genome contains 92 protein-coding genes, 36 transfer RNA genes, eight ribosomal RNA genes, and two pseudogenes. A phylogenetic analysis based on the cp genome of 19 taxa showed high similarity between our cp genome and data published for C. calcicola, which is recognized as a species endemic to the Korean Peninsula. The complete cp genome sequence of C. calcicola reported here provides important information for future phylogenetic and evolutionary studies of Ranunculaceae.

  • Two unrecognized species of Sparganium of Korea were found during the our field expeditions and phylogenetic analyses of specimens deposited in the Herbarium of Korea National Arboretum (KH). S. coreanum H. $L{\acute{e}}v$. was first reported as a new species based on the specimen (Taquet, 2150) collected from Jeju Island. It has been recognized as synonym or infraspecific taxa of S. stoloniferum and S. eurycarpum or even never recognized recently. However, phylogenetic tree showed that S. coreanum is monophyletic and has sister relationship with S. eurycarpum. Furthermore, additional distribution localities were also found by herbarium survey. Morphological characteristics and distribution information of S. coreanum will be discussed. Another Sparganium species found from Mt. Daeam is occurring either as floating or emergent. Although we could not identify this species since lack of any flowers or fruits for two year surveys, phylogenetic analyses results showed that this species belong to the clade of S. glomeratum, which is distributed in high elevation lakes and marshes of Europe, Asia, and North America. Additional survey of morphology and report will be needed.

  • Vulpia octoflora (Walter) Rydb.

  • To improve our understanding of the relationship between soil higher fungi (belonging to Ascomycota and Basidiomycota) and Abies koreana, we surveyed A. koreana soil fungal communities in a forest in Mt. Halla, Jeju Island, Korea by next-generation sequencing (Illumina Miseq). To confirm the soil higher fungal communities, we collected two types of soils from a defined plot: soils with dead (AKDTs) and living A. koreana (AKLTs), respectively. Soil fungi were classified into 2 phyla, 19 classes, 64 orders, 133 families, 195 genera, and 229 OTUs (895,705 sequence reads). Nonmetric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) showed significantly different soil higher fungal communities between AKDTs and AKLTs (p < .05). In addition, the saprophyte composition was significantly affected by A. koreana status (p < .05). The proportion of the mycorrhizal Clavulina spp. was different between soils with AKDTs and AKLTs, suggesting that Clavulina spp. may be a crucial soil fungal species influencing A. koreana. This study will lead to a better understanding of the ecological status of A. koreana in Mt. Halla. In addition, this study could be useful for the conservation and management of A. koreana habitats.

  • Gnaphalium L. is a small herbaceous genus comprising up to 80 species in worldwide (Asia, North to South America, Africa, and Oceania). This genus is highly polymorphic which embrace uncommon broad morphological boundary, and thus further studies were needed to proper taxonomic delimitations for the genus and its relatives. Gnaphalium uliginosum L. was usually found in moist sites such as margins of lake, pond, reservoir, stream banks and paddy field. This squat plant is solely known species in Korean Gnaphalium. During the revisionary study of the tribe Gnaphalieae (Asteraceae) in Korea, however, we found several materials in domestic herbaria (e.g., SNU, KWNU) that identified as G. uliginosum or Gamochaeta pensylvanica (Willd.) Cabrera collected from central to northern Korea, but clearly differ to the morphology of G. uliginosum. The external morphology of the materials is seemingly the only feature at odds with G. uliginosum. However, its morphological characters such as tall erected stems (ca. 30cm), hairs on seeds and whitish tomentose hairs on the whole plants are easily distinguished from G. uliginosum, and rather it looks like G. tranzschelii Kirp. Although the name G. tranzschelii have been treated as synonym of G. uliginosum by several authors, its distinct morphology might be sufficient to separate to two independent taxa. Generally, the morphological polymorphisms and hybridization of G. uliginosum complicate the taxonomy of the species, and thus further investigation for their habitat, distribution and morphology were needed to their taxonomic entity.
