  • Purpose: Since the establishment of Korea Society for the Study of Hospital Architecture, Korea Institute of Healthcare Architecture have carried out various activities to improve the level of healthcare architecture in Korea. Despite of more diverse activities than the beginning, the history and activities of early days of the Society and Institute could be forgotten and omitted. So this paper aims to describe accurately the process of establishment of Korea Society for the Study of Hospital Architecture and Korea Institute of Healthcare Architecture and the activities of the Society and Institute. Methods: Publications and documents issued by Korea Society for the Study of Hospital Architecture and Korea Institute of Healthcare Architecture have been surveyed. And to identify the unwritten activities, personal memo and interviews were also used. Results: The result of this study can be summarized into two points. The first one is that some of the unwritten and uncertain history and activities of the beginning of the KIHA could be identified. The second one is that not also the activities of Korea Society for the Study of Hospital Architecture and Korea Institute of Healthcare Architecture but the activities prior to the Society for the Study could be described. Implications: This research could be the basic data to arrange the history and activities of KIHA.

  • Since 1970s' many hospitals have been built due to the economic growth and change of social policy in Korea. But, we had no sufficient data and design guidelines of planning and designing to get good design solutions. From the first paper on the healthcare architecture issued in 1974, many researches have been performed. Researches could be one of the efforts to solve the problems and satisfy the needs of those periods. Researches could reflect the characteristics of healthcare architecture of those periods. So in this paper 267 papers issued between 1974-2009 were analyzed to get the characteristics patterns of research periodically. This paper aims to provide a basic data for studying of history of healthcare architecture in Korea.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to provide understandings about EBD research trends in Korean healthcare architecture research. Method: The systematic literature review was conducted, while comparing the characteristics of research papers in Journal of Korea Institute of Healthcare Architecture with EBD related research papers among them. Results: It is found that the difference of research method utilized between healthcare research in general and EBD research. Specifically, a research method most utilized in general is a field study. In EBD research, however, literature review is most frequently used. Implications: This study can be used as a reference point for further development of EBD research in Korean healthcare architecture. In addition, research results can be used as a communication tool with healthcare specialists such as doctors and consultants in a healthcare project team. Thus, this study is anticipated to play a preliminary role for the development of healthcare architecture design in Korea.

  • Purpose: The outbreak of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome(MERS) in KOREA has brought up the demands for ventilation guideline and regulations for healthcare facilities since most of the infection was spreaded inside healthcare facility. Currently KOREA has no ventilation guideline or regulations covering entire section of healthcare facility. The purpose of this study is to investigate current ventilation methods in KOREA healthcare facilities to in future, propose ventilation guideline. Methods: Research of foreign counties ventilation guideline and regulation for healthcare facilities were conducted for reference. Field investigation with survey of 21 healthcare were conducted to identify the ventilation system and operating methods. Additionally survey for healthcare workers were conducted to observe the recognition related to ventilation system in healthcare facility. Results: The result showed that most of foreign countries ventilation guideline and regulation suggests similar items to reduce the spread of infection and maintain good indoor air quality. The investigation results indicated that fixed guideline for ventilation in healthcare facility were required due to different ventilation operating methods. Survey result of healthcare workers has told us that ventilation guideline and regulation is needed to prevent further infection. Implications: Absence of ventilation guideline and regulations for healthcare facility in KOREA is an urgent issue.
