  • A standard for the vibration magnitude of a maglev train is presented herein to ensure a comfortable ride for the passengers. The vibration magnitude is determined from the vertical acceleration of the car body. A parameter analysis of the maglev train system is then performed considering the vehicle-structure interaction, and a deflection limit of L/1300 is proposed to satisfy the standard for the vertical acceleration. The proposed deflection limit is applied to the dynamic analysis of the actual maglev train system to assess applicability. Compared with the existing standard for the guideway structure, the proposed deflection limit is expected to enable economical design and construction.

  • As earthquakes have increased in Korea recently, people are paying attention to the seismic performance of buildings built in the past. Many school buildings in Korea were built based on standard drawings before the seismic design was applied. However, since school buildings are often designated as emergency evacuation facilities in case of disasters such as earthquakes, seismic evaluation and retrofit must be done quickly. This study investigated the failure modes among structural components (beams, columns, and joints), focusing on 1980s standard drawings for school buildings. The effects of column axial force, partial masonry infills, and different material strengths for concrete and rebar were considered for detailed evaluation. As a result, most of the joints were found to be the weakest among structural components. Column axial forces tended to make the joints more vulnerable, and partial masonry infills increased the possibility of joint failure and shear failure in columns.

  • A ground-motion prediction equation (GMPE) for the Korean Peninsula, especially for South Korea, is developed based on synthetic ground motions generated using a ground motion model derived from instrumental records from 11 recent earthquakes of $M_L$>4.5 in Korea, including the Gyeongju earthquake of Sept. 12. 2016 ($M_L$5.8). PSAs of one standard deviation from the developed GMPE with $M_W$ 6.5 at hypocentral distances of 15 km and 25 km are compared to the design spectrum (soil condition, $S_B$) of the Korean Building Code 2016 (KBC), indicating that: (1) PSAs at short periods around 0.2 sec can be 1.5 times larger than the corresponding KBC PSA, and (2) SD's at periods longer than 2 sec do not exceed 8 cm. Although this comparison of the design spectrum with those of the GMPE developed herein intends to identify the characteristics of the scenario earthquake in a lower-seismicity region such as South Korea, it does not mean that the current design spectrum should be modified accordingly. To develop a design spectrum compatible with the Korean Peninsula, more systematic research using probabilistic seismic hazard analysis is necessary in the future.

  • Intranet is an enterprise network using Internet protocols as communication standard and HTML as content standard. The Internet is like a house built on information water. It has a lot of strong points as a future enterprise network. However, companies wish to have confidence in its functional and economic effectiveness and security before adopting it. The security issue especially is a problem to solve inevitably. Enterprises will hold back to adopt Intranet unless there are enough security counter plans and countermeasures against vulnerabilities of Intranet(it is the wise decision !). Nevertheless the researches related to Intranet has been concentrated on techniques for building it. In this paper, we focus the security aspect of Intranet. Intranet security must be considered on the whole from structure design to users' services. We propose a security-based Intranet structure and security management system.

  • The safety and reliablity of nuclear power plant operations relies heavily on the plant operators ability to respond to various emergency situations. It has become standard industry practice to utilize simulators to improve the safety and reliability of nuclear power plants operations. The simulators built for Younggwang#3("YGN#3"), which is based on the Korean Standard Nuclear Power Plant ("KSNPP")design, has been developed precisely for this purpose. The YGN#3 simulator is the first simulator in Korea to be developed locally and is now operational on site. A particular attention was placed on the development of CPC/COLLS safety system which is unique to the YGN#3. The effort to develop CPC/COLLS simulation model has been successful and plans exist for applying this model to simulator projects in the future.jects in the future.

  • The study aimed at investigating the terms for each type of the current household furniture and at analyzing a standard based on those terms researched for the furniture, not including kitchen and child furniture. The study was conducted in sales and R&D division of major furniture brands such as Jang-In Gagu, Borneo, and Livart by surveying their staffs, and then, the investigated names were classified according to similar criteria and it was finally analyzed by the definite standard of the names made. In the results, the following 5 standards largely play roles for the naming. First, name according to requirements, second, construction of door, third, materials, fourth, shapes, and lastly, function. Except for the terms of "Sobari" expressed only as Japanese and "living room cabinet of Extension-type" using Korean and English along, most of the names show furniture in detail, and the names from Hangeul, Korean alphabet and from the English have recently and drastically increased with the lifestyle change influenced from Western world.

  • Objectives of this study included design of head and evaluation of the pullout performance of the headed reinforcement that can be used to replace standard hooks in the building exterior beam-column joints. Results of 36 pullout tests are presented. Test variables included reinforcing bar diameters (16-25mm), embedment depth (6-7db), transverse reinforcement, and single-vs.-group pullout behavior. The square head designed had gross area of 4Ab and thickness of db. The headed reinforcement made of Dl6 bars developed pullout strengths close to the bar yield strength, but larger bars developed strengths smaller than the yield strengths. The pullout resistance increased with decreasing spacing of the transverse reinforcement. Use of column ties with 6.0-db spacing improved the pullout performance of the headed bars without causing difficulties in fabricating the specimens. The comparison of the pullout performances between the headed bars and the standard hooks revealed that strengths, stiffnesses, and ductile behaviors are about the same.

  • In this paper, GU environmental controller is implemented with USB(Universal serial bus) IF(interface). Especially, the performance examination of ultrasound diagnostic device which connects external USB port with front panel is automatically inspected by VC++ examination program. The test program minimizes the operation of inspector with making the examined result audible or visible, and maximizes the productivity of custom device. The GUI environmental controller controls a standard keyboard, a track ball with dedicated buttons to emulate a standard two-button mouse, switches, rotary encoders, an analog potentiometer group, two alpha-numeric displays. and a touch screen; all of which generate events for the host.

  • The incomplete penetration(IP) discontinuity in butt joint weld, which is detected during safety analysis of the steel bridge by nondestructive evaluation(NDE) method, is classified as unacceptable defect according to the NDE codes and standards. In fact, there are a little allowance in butt joint weld in the view point of design criterion, and also detected IP discontinuity should be classified and evaluated for the fatigue strength and residual life estimation. In this study, we performed fatigue test to evaluate the fatigue strength of high strength steel(SWS490A) containing IP discontinuities in various size, the results compared and classified according to the bridge construction standard specification which published by korea administration of construction and traffic. Experimental results could be used to evaluate and estimate the IP discontinuities considering different stress range in butt joint bridge weld during periodic safety inspection.

  • ARIA and the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) are next generation standard block cipher algorithms of Korea and the US, respectively. This letter presents an area-efficient unified hardware architecture of ARIA and AES. Both algorithms have 128-bit substitution permutation network (SPN) structures, and their substitution and permutation layers could be efficiently merged. Therefore, we propose a 128-bit processor architecture with resource sharing, which is capable of processing ARIA and AES. This is the first architecture which supports both algorithms. Furthermore, it requires only 19,056 logic gates and encrypts data at 720 Mbps and 1,047 Mbps for ARIA and AES, respectively.
