KOMPSAT -2 equipped with an optical telescope(MSC) will be launched in this year. It can take images of the earth with push-broom scanning at altitude 685Km. Its resolution is 1m in panchromatic channel with a swath width of 15 km After the MSC is tested and the performance is measured at instrument level, it is installed on satellite. The image passes through the electro-optical system, compression and storage unit and fmally downlink sub-systems. This integration procedure necessitates the functional test of all subsystems participating in the image chain. The objective of functional test at satellite level(Quick Look test) is to check the functionality of image chain by real target image. Collimated moving image is input to the EOS in order to simulate the operational environments as if KOMPSAT -2 is being operated in orbit. The image chain from EOS to data downlink subsystem will be verified through Quick Look test. This paper explains the Quick Look test of KOMPSAT -2 and compares the taken images with collimated input ones.

The KOrea Multi-Purpose Satellite-2 (KOMPSAT-2) was launched in July 2006 and the main mission of the KOMPSAT-2 is a high resolution imaging for the cartography of Korea peninsula by utilizing Multi Spectral Camera (MSC) images. The camera resolutions are 1 m in panchromatic scene and 4 m in multi-spectral imaging. This paper provides an initial geometric accuracy assessment of the KOMPSAT-2 high resolution image without ground control points and briefly introduces the sensor model of KOMPSAT-2. Also investigated and evaluated the obtained 3-dimensional terrain information using the MSC pass image and scene images acquired from the KOMPSAT-2 satellite.
This paper outlines the development of image processing system, which will allow the general users in Government and Public organizations easily to use and apply KOMPSAT EOC images in their own business. The system includes an import/export module of EOC image distributed in Hierarchical Data Format (HDF) file and various image processing analysis modules. Especially, the image mosaic and subset functions are designed to use EOC image as an image map, generating the Ortho-image module. To update the various spatial data with EOC image, some essential modules such as change detection by pattern recognition, overlay between images and vector data, and modification of vector data are implemented in the system. The system is developed based on the user request analysis of government agency, and suited for more efficient use of satellite image in public applications. Such system is expected to contribute to practical application of KOMPSAT-2 that will be launched in 2005. Further efforts will be made to accommodate the KOMPSAT -2 MSC data.

Despite the ecological importance of seagrass beds, their distributional information in Korean coastal waters is insufficient. Therefore, we used hydroacoustic system to collect accurate bathymetry and classification of seagrass, and Kompsat-2 (4 m spatial resolution) image for detection of seagrass beds at Deukryang Bay, Korea. The accuracy of Kompsat-2 image classification was evaluated using hydracoustic survey result using error matrix and Kappa value. The total area of seagrass beds from satellite image classification was underestimated compared to the hydroacoustic survey, estimated 3.9 and $4.5km^2$ from satellite image and hydroacoustic data, respectively. Nonetheless, the accuracy of Kompsat-2 image classification over hydroacoustic-based method showing 90% (Kappa=0.85) for the three class maps (seagrass, unvegetated seawater and aquaculture). The agreement between the satellite image classification and the hydroacoustic result was 77.1% (the seagrass presence/absence map). From our result of satellite image classification, Kompsat-2 image is suitable for mapping seagrass beds with high accuracy and non-destructive method. For more accurate information, more researches with a variety of high-resolution satellite image will be preceded.
The KOMPSAT-3A satellite acquires high-resolution MWIR images twice a day compared to conventional Earth observing satellites. New radiometric information of Earth's surface can be provided due to different characteristics from existing SWIR images or TIR images. In this study, the difference image of multitemporal images was generated and compared with existing infrared images to find the characteristics of KOMPSAT-3A MWIR satellite images. A co-registration was performed and the difference between pixel values was minimized by using PIFs (Pseudo Invariant Features) pixel-based relative normalization. The experiment using Sentinel-2 SWIR image, Landsat 8 TIR image, and KOMPSAT-3A MWIR image showed that the distinction between artifacts in the difference image of KOMPSAT-3A is prominent. It is believed that the utilization of KOMPSAT-3A MWIR images can be improved by using the characteristics of IR image.

The KOMPSAT-2 was developed by KARI and it was successfully launched from Plesetsk, Russia on 28th July 2006. The Korean government decided the commercialization of the KOMPSAT-2 image data and direct reception services worldwide. SPOT Image, based in Toulouse (France) was selected by KARI through an international open bidding as a foreign company for the KOMPSAT-2 image promotion over the entire world except the territory of Republic of Korea including the North Korea, the United States of America, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman, Yemen, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria. KAI (Korea Aerospace Industry Ltd.) is an engaged Korean company for this area. KARI has responsibility to operate the satellite, data acquisition, archiving for the worldwide commercialization. For the processing and delivery of the KOMPSAT-2 image data to the users of KAI and SPOT Image, KAI has the binding contract with KARI. So KAI has the responsibility for the commercial ground station operation such as user support, data processing, and the data delivery. The KOMPSAT-2 ground station is hosted in KARI, so KARI has developed the concept of KOCUST (KOMPSAT-2 Commercial User Support Team) jointly with KAI to support the data processing and delivery as KOMPSAT-2 developer and satellite operator. The main purpose of the KOCUST is to support the operational activities to provide the data and service quality to satisfy customers. KOCUST will be organized by the members of KARI and KAI together. KARI members will mainly take the role of KOCUST coordination, data processing and user support in a public sector. KAI members are going to take user desk, data validation and delivery et cetera, which are related with users. This paper describes a summarized concepts of KOCUST like organization, dedicated tasks of each part and work flow of daily operation.
According to the image level definition for KOMPSAT-2 in KOMPSAT-2 Ground Station Specification, the level 0 is frame formatted, unprocessed data at full resolution; any and all communications artifacts (e.g., synchronization frames, communications headers) removed. The level 0 is used for two purposes: 1) exchange of imagery between image receiving & processing element (IRPE), and 2) image transfer from the Receiving & Archiving Subsystem to Search & Processing Subsystem. On-board processing of imagery data of KOMPSAT-2 includes JPEG-like compression and encryption besides conventional CCSDS packetization. The encryption is used to secure imagery data from any intervention during downlink and compression allows real-time downlink of image data reducing data rate produced from the camera. While developing ground receiving system for KOMPSAT-2, it was necessarily to define level 0 products. In this paper, we will suggest level 0 product definition for KOMPSAT-2 and explain reasons of the decisions made. The key factor used while defining the level 0 products is the efficiency of whole ground receiving system. The latter half of the paper will explain the implementation of software that generates level 0 products. The necessary steps to produce level 0 products will be explained, and the performance achieved will be presented.

In this study, the orbit-based sensor modeling is applied to the digital plotting and the accuracy of digital plotting is analyzed. The KOMPSAT-2 satellite image with orbit-attitude model is used for the analysis. The precise sensor modeling with various combination of parameters is performed for the stereo satellite image. In addition, we analyze the error range of ground control points by applying the result of stereo modeling to digital survey system. According to the result, it is possible to produce digital map using stereo image with a small number of GCPs when the orbit-based sensor modeling for KOMPSAT-2 is applied. This means that it is suitable for the generation of digital map on a scale of 1/5,000 to 1/25,000 considering the resolution of KOMPSAT-2 image.
This study investigated the method for obtaining 3-dimensional terrain information on inaccessable areas by evaluating geometric accuracy of the EOC pass image and scene image acquired from the KOMPSAT-1 satellite. For this purpose, the following four experiments were conducted to evaluate the accuracy of the KOMPSAT-1 EOC satellite data. 1) Calculation of ground coordinates by using ancillary data and image coordinates on Level 1R that were processed by the pre-processing system of KOMPSAT-1. 2) Calculation of 3-dimensional ground coordinates from the ground coordinates of stereo images calculated by using ancillary data, based on space intersections. 3) Execution of bundle adjustment by using GCP (Ground Control Point) extracted in a part of the stereo pass image (KOMPSAT-1 EOC, 1 scene size); and then, evaluation of the ground coordinates from the calculated exterior orientation. 4) Evaluation of accuracy by applying the exterior orientation calculated from 3) To the whole pass image.
Multi-Spectral Camera(MSC) on the KOMPSAT-2 satellite was developed and launched as a main payload to provide 1m of GSD(Ground Sampling Distance) for one(1) channel panchromatic imaging and 4m of GSD for four(4) channel multi-spectral imaging at 685km altitude covering l5km of swath width. Since the compression on MSC image chain was required to overcome the mismatch between input data rate and output date rate JPEG-like method was selected and analyzed to check the influence on the performance. In normal operation the MSC data is being acquired and transmitted with lossy compression ratio to cover whole image channel and full swath width in real-time. In the other hand the MSC performance have carefully been handled to avoid or minimize any degradation so that it was analyzed and restored in KGS(KOMPSAT Ground Station) during LEOP(Launch and Early Operation Phase). While KOMPSAT-2 had been developed, new compression method based upon wavelet for space application was introduced and available for next satellite. The study on improvement of image chain including new compression method is asked for next KOMPSAT which requires better GSD and larger swath width In this paper, satellite image chain which consists of on-board image chain and on-ground image chain including general MSC description is briefly described. The performance influences on the image chain between two on-board compression methods which are or will be used for KOMPSAT are analyzed. The differences on performance between two methods are compared and the better solution for the performance improvement of image chain on KOMPSAT is suggested.
