  • Prototyping for field inspection safety assessment expert system of bridge structures is presented in this paper. Knowledgebase with production rules is constructed using the semiautomatic method on the basis of bridge inspection manuals and working reports of the related agency. Backward inference method is taken with the aids of external shells as a inference engine of knowledge-based systems. Implementation of the developed prototype system on MS Windows98 will shows inspiring aspects useful to guide and standardize the field works. In the case to be reinforced with abundant knowledge bases, this will be expected to be educate the practicing engineers.

  • This paper presents a knowledge based system to solve reactive power/voltage control problem in a power system. A need is recognized for new methods to alleviate a bus voltage limit violation more quickly when a power system becomes an emergency state due to contingency. To cope with this object, a set of indices concept which is used to make bus order list of reactive power injection priority is introduced. A set of indices, based on the overall system conditions, consists of steady state stability index, reactive power transmittance indes, voltage severity index and generator fuel cost index. This scheme and empirical rules of the knowledge on the basis of the human expert result in fast decision-making of the reactive power compensation devices since only the amount of devices is determined by the inference in the knowledge based system when the voltage violation is detected. In this approach, control devices such as shunt capacitor (reactor), transformer tap settings and generator voltages are utilized. Also the developed system herein can be used to minimize control action taken or generator fuel cost according to the user's option on the weighting factor. The results of a case study are also presented.

  • Cognition and control of grinding trouble occurring during the grinding process are classified into a quantitative knowledge which depends on experimental data and qualitative knowledge which relies on skiful engineers. grinding operations include a large number of functional parameters since there are several ways of coping with ginding trouble. One is the qualitative method which depends on empirical knowledge utilizing the skilful experts from the workshop the other is the quantitative method which utilizes the experimental data obtained by sensor. But they are all difficult to accomplish from the grinding trouble-shooting system The reason is that grinding troubles are not accomplish from the grinding trouble-shooting system,. The rason is that grinding troubles are not easily controlled in the quantitative method and therefore trouble-shooting has mainly relied on the knoledge of skiful engineers. Thus there is an important issue of how a grinding touble-shooting system can be designed and what knowledge is utilized among the large amount of grinding trouble information. In this paper basic strategy to develop the grinding database by taking rule-based model which is strongly depended upon experience and intuition is described.

  • An airman licensing system is central to the establishment and management of a state's airman licensing which gives official privileges to a person to perform specific activities by evaluating applicant's knowledge and proficiency. In recent decades, the level of the domestic aviation industry continues to leap forward and state's airman licensing system has also been advanced. However, accidents caused by pilot human errors are still occurring. In particular, the pilot occupations require a lot of experience and knowledge and the student pilots receiving the initial flight training have formed their own flight habits based on knowledge, skill, training methods, procedures, etc learned from the flight instructor. This paper discusses possible ways on the improvement for the domestic flight instructor rating by analyzing domestic and international rules and procedures for a flight instructor rating.

  • An event means a flow which has a time attribute such as the a symptom of patients, an interval event has the time period between the start-time-point and the end-time-point. Although there are many studies for temporal data mining, they do not deal with discovering knowledge from interval event such as patient histories and purchase histories. In this paper, we suggest a method of temporal data mining that finds association rules of event causal relationships and predicts an occurrence of effect event based on discovered rules. Our method can predict the occurrence of an event by summarizing an interval event using the time attribute of an event and finding the causal relationship of event. As a result of simulation, this method can discover better knowledge than others by considering a lot of supports of an event and finding the significant rare relation on interval events which means an essential cause of an event, regardless of an occurrence support of an event in comparison with conventional data mining techniques.

  • Wrappers play an important role in extracting specified information from various sources. Wrapper rules by which information is extracted are often created from the domain-specific knowledge. Domain-specific knowledge helps recognizing the meaning the text representing various entities and values and detecting their formats However, such domain knowledge becomes powerless when value-representing data are not labeled with appropriate textual descriptions or there is nothing but a hyper link when certain text labels or values are expected. In order to alleviate these problems, we propose a probabilistic method for recognizing the entity type, i.e. generating wrapper rules, when there is no label associated with value-representing text. In addition, we have devised a method for using the information reachable by following hyperlinks when textual data are not immediately available on the target web page. Our experimental work shows that the proposed methods help increasing precision of the resulting wrapper, particularly extracting the title information, the most important entity on a web page. The proposed methods can be useful in making a more efficient and correct information extraction system for various sources of information without user intervention.

  • In this paper, an adaptive workflow management system, called K-WFMS, is proposed. The K-WFMS integrates database system and knowledge-based system to automate business processes that are executed with complex and various business rules such as task scheduling, role resolution, and exception handling rules. The K-WFMS is adaptable in the sense that it allows its users to change workflow schema in the course of workflow execution as well as it provides rule-based modeling constructs to handle predictable exceptions during workflow modeling. The overall architecture and implementation of K-WFMS are explained, and the change propagation mechanism to maintain validity of workflow model is suggested.

  • Fusion of decisions from multiple distributed sensor nodes is studied in this work. Based on the canonical parallel fusion model, we derive the optimal likelihood ratio based fusion rule with the assumptions of the generalized Gaussian noise model and the arbitrary fading channel. This optimal fusion rule, however, requires the complete knowledge of the channels and the detection performance of local sensor nodes. To mitigate these requirements and to provide near optimum performance, we derive suboptimum fusion rules by using high and low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) approximations to the optimal fusion rule. Performance evaluation is conducted through simulations.

  • A knowledge-based expert system has been developed implementing the ambiguous process of conceptual design of flywheels in earlier design stage to assist the selection of proper flywheel types and dimensions. Knowledge for the flywheel design consists of the rules for conventional as well as super flywheels and other informations required for the design process. Those knowledges were extracted from literatures and some experts in the field. With these knowledges, an integrated knowledge based expert system was developed to help users with informations and facilities to design flywheels interactively using a commercial package of knowledge-based system called INSIGHT2 of backward chaining and proprietary package of forward chaining written in LISP language. The developed system consists of the knowledge base part and calculation park : the first one consists of main module and user level modules and the other one is to assist in analyzing the stress distribution in the flywheels and deciding the flywheel dimensions and specifications for various types of flywheels using proper data bases and graphic facilities. With this flywheel design software, several examples were tried generating acceptable design results.

  • We present a statistical analysis of Korean phonological variations using automatic generation of phonetic transcription. We have constructed the automatic generation system of Korean pronunciation variants by applying rules modeling obligatory and optional phonemic changes and allophonic changes. These rules are derived from knowledge-based morphophonological analysis and government standard pronunciation rules. This system is optimized for continuous speech recognition by generating phonetic transcriptions for training and constructing a pronunciation dictionary for recognition. In this paper, we describe Korean phonological variations by analyzing the statistics of phonemic change rule applications for the 60,000 sentences in the Samsung PBS(Phonetic Balanced Sentence) Speech DB. Our results show that the most frequently happening obligatory phonemic variations are in the order of liaison, tensification, aspirationalization, and nasalization of obstruent, and that the most frequently happening optional phonemic variations are in the order of initial consonant h-deletion, insertion of final consonant with the same place of articulation as the next consonants, and deletion of final consonant with the same place of articulation as the next consonants. These statistics can be used for improving the performance of speech recognition systems.
