PubMine: An Ontology-Based Text Mining System for Deducing Relationships among Biological Entities

  • Background: Published manuscripts are the main source of biological knowledge. Since the manual examination is almost impossible due to the huge volume of literature data (approximately 19 million abstracts in PubMed), intelligent text mining systems are of great utility for knowledge discovery. However, most of current text mining tools have limited applicability because of i) providing abstract-based search rather than sentence-based search, ii) improper use or lack of ontology terms, iii) the design to be used for specific subjects, or iv) slow response time that hampers web services and real time applications. Results: We introduce an advanced text mining system called PubMine that supports intelligent knowledge discovery based on diverse bio-ontologies. PubMine improves query accuracy and flexibility with advanced search capabilities of fuzzy search, wildcard search, proximity search, range search, and the Boolean combinations. Furthermore, PubMine allows users to extract multi-dimensional relationships between genes, diseases, and chemical compounds by using OLAP (On-Line Analytical Processing) techniques. The HUGO gene symbols and the MeSH ontology for diseases, chemical compounds, and anatomy have been included in the current version of PubMine, which is freely available at http://pubmine.kobic.re.kr. Conclusions: PubMine is a unique bio-text mining system that provides flexible searches and analysis of biological entity relationships. We believe that PubMine would serve as a key bioinformatics utility due to its rapid response to enable web services for community and to the flexibility to accommodate general ontology.

  • Because the current web search engine estimates the similarity of documents, using the frequency of words, many documents irrespective of the user query are provided. To solve these kinds of problems, the semantic web is appearing as a future web. It is possible to provide the service based on the semantic web through ontology which specifies the knowledge in a special domain and defines the concepts of knowledge and the relationships between concepts. In this paper to search the information of potential customers for home-delivery marketing, we model the specific domain for generating the ontology. And we research how to retrieve the information, using the ontology. Therefore, in this paper, we generate the ontology to define the domain about potential customers and develop the search robot which collects the information of customers.

지인 기반의 스마트 지식공유 시스템에 관한 연구 (A Study on Smart Knowledge Sharing System with Friends)

  • 정보통신망과 컴퓨터 기술의 발전은 수많은 정보 및 지식을 생산해 내는 기반이 되었고, 최근 대중화가 가속화 되고 있는 스마트디바이스는 사용자가 원하는 정보와 지식을 쉽게 획득할 수 있는 도구로 사용되고 있다. 이에 본 논문에서는 인터넷 정보와 소셜네트워크를 활용한 스마트 디바이스 기반의 지식공유 시스템을 제안한다. 제안하는 시스템은 사용자 질의에 대해 인터넷 정보 검색, 축적된 지식 검색, 소셜네트워크 상의 지인 답변 기능으로 구성된다. 제안한 시스템의 효용성 분석을 위하여 사용자 만족도 평가를 실시하였다. 실험결과 스마트디바이스를 이용한 지식공유 시스템이 일반 정보검색엔진에 비해 통계적으로 유의미한 만족도를 나타냈다.

  • The purpose of this study is to explore how pre-service elementary teachers perceive and use smart learning environments. For this purpose, 23 pre-service elementary teachers who took theory and practice in a science education course were asked to develop lesson materials using smart tools and make a self-report questionnaire. These data were categorized in an instructional, exploratory, and interactive approach, depending on how they guided students to access knowledge and information. As a result of the study, pre-service teachers perceived the smart tools as the exploratory and interactive learning tools to be used for students to actively search for and interact with data and knowledge. But in developing lesson materials, they usually used the smart tools for resource sharing and communication in the instructional manner. In conclusion, the gap between their perception of smart tools and lesson materials, and the educational implications will be discussed.

기술혁신을 위한 외부지식 탐색 전략 : 소기업 vs 중기업 (External Knowledge Search Strategy and Technological Innovation : Small vs Medium Firms)

  • 본 연구는 소기업과 중기업의 서로 다른 외부지식 탐색 전략이 기술혁신에 미치는 영향을 분석하는 것을 목적으로 하였다. 특히 우리나라의 소기업과 중기업을 비교하는 연구가 없었기 때문에, 본 연구에서는 2010년 "한국기술혁신조사" 자료를 활용하여 분석을 하였다. 그 결과, 먼저 소기업의 경우에는 기업 내에 보유하고 있는 자원과 역량이 매우 부족하므로 다양한 원천으로부터 외부 탐색의 폭을 넓히는 전략(external search breadth)이 기술혁신을 촉진하는 것으로 나타났다. 반면, 중기업의 경우에는 외부 지식을 공급하는 주체와의 보다 장기적이고 긴밀한 관계를 추구하는 전략(external search depth)이 기술혁신을 촉진하는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과는 기존에 하나의 그룹으로 묶어 분석했던 중소기업의 혁신활동을 보다 세분화하여 소기업과 중기업의 관점에서 보아야 한다는 점을 강조한다. 또한 더 나아가 벤처기업을 포함한 신생기업들이 소기업 단계에서는 지식의 다양성을 추구하는 전략이 효과적이며, 점차 성장해 가며 중기업 단계에 들어서면 특화된 지식에 보다 집중하는 전략이 효과적일 것이라는 것을 시사한다.

User Perceptions of Uncertainty in the Selection of Information Retrieval System: Implications for System and Service Improvement

  • While numerous studies have suggested the significance of uncertainty during the process of information-seeking, less research has investigated user uncertainty in the actual search process using a real system. This study investigated user perceptions of uncertainty in the process of the selection of information retrieval system in the real information-seeking process. Considering the role of commercial Web search engines as supplementary tools for traditional bibliographic databases in academic research environments, this study analyzed the selection behavior of scholarly researchers, who use such search tools for their academic study. The researchers were limited to the discipline of science in order to understand user perceptions in this field. The findings revealed various dimensions, types, and incidents of uncertainty. Variations appeared in different incidents of uncertainty relating to the unique characteristics of the subjects' information-seeking context. The identification of three principal origins of uncertainty based on the different types of uncertainty generated implications to improve information systems and services.

  • This paper proposes a design of a citizen advisory model under the consideration of the unique characteristics of the government, namely complex structure of goals, predominance by laws, knowledge driven organization, and the good governance objectives. The legal knowledge-based technology is explored with the aims to facilitate citizens in accessing e-government services in five phases: search, intake, decision-making, explanations, and objection and appeal phases. The design of the citizen advisory model consists of four components: specific service advice, customized form fill-in service, decision-making services, and a statement of reasons service. The prototype of the citizen advisory model is illustrated using the Thai Anti Dumping and Countervailing Act 1999 as a legal domain and e-government services example.

  • High unemployment rates repeatedly cause recurring social problems such as fewer employment opportunities and employment insecurity. Following this trend, various programs related to employment have been provided through various government and institutions. However, they have established overlapping policies and programs and there is no one stop gateway to find effective and efficient way to find relevant information. For this purpose, this study aims to provide employment and job search subject gateway development. The study has carried out case studies, literature reviews, and user survey. Based on this study, it suggested a linked metadata model to organize and link scattered information together, and a digital gateway operating diverse information services. It is expected to provide a basis to develop comprehensive information service model for employment.

지식검색 서비스에서의 소셜 네트워크 기반 영향력 지수 알고리즘 (An Influence Value Algorithm based on Social Network in Knowledge Retrieval Service)

  • 집단지성을 이용한 지식검색 서비스는 개방적 구조와 축적된 자료를 공유할 수 있다는 커뮤니티적인 특성으로 큰 인기를 얻고 있다. 하지만 방대한 지식공유 속에서 사용자가 진정으로 원하는 답변 획득은 점점 더 어려워지고 있다. 최근 알고리즘에서 가장 정교하다고 평가 받는 구글을 통해 상위에 랭크된 검색 결과들 중에는 집단지성을 통해 구축된 위키피디아, 야후 Q/A와 같은 소셜 검색엔진의 검색 결과들이 상당수 존재한다. 본 논문은 대부분의 질문은 인간으로부터 문제해결의 실마리를 얻을 수 있다는 점과 온라인상의 사용자에 대한 연구를 통해 지식검색 서비스 사용자 중 영향력 자를 찾는 것에 목적을 둔다. 이에 국내 소셜 검색엔진의 대표인 네이버 지식iN을 중심으로 지식검색내의 사용자 활동성과 신뢰성을 소셜 네트워크 기반으로 정의하고, 사용자간의 관계를 중앙성으로 분석하는 영향력 지수 알고리즘을 제안한다. 제안된 알고리즘을 통한 영향력 지수는 지식검색 서비스에서 문제 해결의 실마리를 가진 사용자를 랭킹화 함으로써 질문에 적합하고신뢰성 있는 답변을 하는 사용자를 분별하는 지표가 되며 이를 바탕으로 지식검색 서비스내의 영향력 자를 식별 가능하게 된다. 이는 지식검색 서비스사용자의 최대 목적인 사용자가필요로 하는 정보와 지식을 보다 용이하게 획득 가능케 함으로써 검색 만족도 향상에 큰 기여를 할 것이다.

구강관리에 대한 인터넷 상담 실태조사 (Research on Internet Counselling for Oral Health)

  • The purpose of this study was to make a comparative analysis of dental question and answer in portal sites. To achieve this, 4,212 questions were used for final analysis after connecting to Naver, Daum and Nate, which take first, second and third place in rank information of all sites at Rankey.com, to search dental information by keyword from January to late March. The results are as follows. Naver was the highest as a portal of Internet search engines. Questions on the use of dental clinics, the quality of dental services and the offer of dental services by types of dental clinics were very important. Dental clinics had to give dental patients customized services and information to please them through dental services and dental information services on the Internet, and questions and answers on this were increasing very explosively. Consequently, Dental clinics will have to give Internet users and health- and disease-related data searchers distinctive professional services by inquiring into factors affecting portal search and factors affecting health- and disease-related search, respectively.
