The Stewart Platform is a six-degree-of-freedom in-parallel-actuated manipiulator mechanism. The kinematic behavior of parallel mechanisms shows inverse characteristics as compared that of serial mechanisms; i.e, the inverse kinematic problem of Stewart Platform is straightforward, but no closed form solution of the forward kinematic problem has been previously presented. Thus it is difficult to calculate the 6 DOF displacement of the platform from the measured lengths of the six actuators in real time. Here, a real-time estimation algorithm which solves the Stewart Platform kinematic problem is proposed and tested through computer simulations and experiments. The proposed algorithm shows stable convergence characteristics, no estimation errors in steady state and good estimation performance with higher sampling rate. In experiments it is shown that the estimation result is the same as that of simulation even in the presence of measurement noise.
This study is about an optimum design to improve the kinematic and compliance characteristics of a torsion-beam suspension system. The kinematic and compliance characteristics of an initial design of the suspension was obtained through a roll-mode analysis. The objective function was set to minimize within design constraints. The coordinates of the connecting point between the torsion-beam and the trailing arm were treated as design parameters. Since the torsion-beam suspension has large nonlinear effects due to kinematic and elastic motion, Genetic Algorithms were employed for the optimal design. The optimized results were verified through a double-lane change simulation using the full vehicle model.
In this study we presented kinematic and kinetic data of foot joints using approximated equations and partial plantar pressure during gait. The maximum angular displacements of each tarsometatarsal joint were found to range from 4$^{\circ}$to 7$^{\circ}$ and the maximum moments were from 200Nㆍcm to 1500Nㆍcm. It was relatively wide distribution. Foot kinematic data calculated from the approximated equations, which were represented by the correlation between moment and angular displacement, and the data from motion analysis were similar. We found that the movements of foot joint were mainly decided by the passive characteristics of the joint when ground reaction force acts. The method of kinematic and kinetic analysis using approximated equations which is presented in this study is considered useful to describe the movements of foot joints in gait simulations.
In this study, a 3-DOF XYZ micro parallel manipulator utilizing compliance mechanism is developed and analyzed. In so doing, a matrix method is used to rapidly solve displacements of the designed kinematic structure, and then kinematic characteristics of the developed manipulator are analyzed. Finally, the design analysis of the kinematic characteristics by changing hinge thickness and structure to improve workspace and translation motion is performed to show that the performance of the developed manipulator is relatively superior to the other similar kind of manipulators.
Pantograph, which collects current from cartenary system, is one of the important parts of high-speed train. Kinematic analysis is one of the key technologies for pantograph design and includes joint trajectories, reaction forces, and the required moment of main shaft calculations. The kinematic analysis, however, is very complex and time-consuming process. In this study PC based pantograph kinematic analysis software using graphical user interface tool was developed for the easy evaluations of kinematic characteristics necessary in pantograph design process.
In our pervious paper, a new parallel-type spherical 3-degree-of-freedom mechanism consisting of a two-degree-of-freedom parallel module and a serial RRR subchain was proposed[1]. In this paper, its improved version is suggested and implemented. Differently from the previous 3-dof spherical mechanism, gear chains are incorporated into the current version of the mechanism to drive the distal revolute joint of the serial subchain from the base of the mechanism and in fact, the modification significantly improves kinematic characteristics of the mechanism within its workspace. Firstly, after a brief description on its structure, the closed-form solutions of both the forward and the reverse position analysis are derived. Secondly, the first-order kinematic model of the mechanism for the inputs which are assumed to be located at the base is derived. Thirdly, through the simulations of the kinematic analysis via. kinematic isotropic index, it is confirmed that the mechanism has much more improved isotropic properties throughout the workspace of the mechanism than the previous mechanism in [1]. Lastly, the proposed mechanism is implemented to verify the results from this analysis.
A redundantly actuated planar 3-degree-of-freedom parallel mechanism is analyzed to show its high application potential as a haptic device. Its structure along with the closed form forward position solutions is briefly discussed. Then its geometric and kinematic characteristics via singularity analysis, the kinematic isotropy index, and the input-output force transmission ratio are investigated both for the redundantly actuated cases and for the non-redundantly actuated case. In addition, comparative joint torque simulations of the mechanism with different number of redundant actuations as well as without redundant actuation are conducted to confirm the improved joint torque distribution characteristics. Through these analyses it is shown that the geometric and kinematic characteristics of the redundantly actuated mechanism are superior to the ones of the mechanism without redundant actuation. Thus, it can be concluded that the suggested planar mechanism with redundant actuation has a very high potential for haptic device applications.
Recently, lots of parallel mechanisms for spatial 3-DOF and 6-DOF were investigated. However, research on 4-DOF and 5-DOF parallel mechanisms has been very few. In this paper, we propose a 4-DOF parallel mechanism that consists of 3-rotational and 1-translational motions. The kinematic characteristics of this mechanism are analyzed in terms of an isotropic index and maximum force transmission ratio, and its kinematic optimization is being conducted to ensure enhanced kinematic performances

An efficient interacting multiple mode(IMM) approach for tracking a maneuvering target with kinematic constraints is described based on the square root information filter(SRIF). The SRIF is employed instead of the conventional Kalman filter since it exhibits more efficient features in handling the kinematic constraints and improved numerical characteristics. The kinematic constraints are considered in the filtering process as pseudomeasurements where the degree of uncertainty is represented by the magnitude of the pseudomeasurement noise variance. The Monte Carlo simulations for the constant speed, maneuvering target are provided to demonstrate the improved tracking performance of the proposed algorithm.
As the design rules in semiconductor manufacturing process become more and more stringent, the higher degree of planarization of device surface is required for a following lithography process. Also, it is great challenge for chemical mechanical polishing to achieve global planarization of 12” wafer or beyond. To meet such requirements, it is essential to understand the CMP equipment and process itself. In this paper, authors suggest the velocity distribution on the wafer, direction of friction force and the uniformity of velocity distribution of conventional rotary CMP equipment in an analytical method for an intuitive understanding of variation of kinematic variables. To this end, a novel dimensionless variable defined as “kinematic number” is derived. Also, it is shown that the kinematic number could consistently express the velocity distribution and other kinematic characteristics of rotary CMP equipment.
