ZnSe/$SiO_2$ coaxial nanowires were synthesized by a two-step process: thermal evaporation of ZnSe powders and sputter-deposition of $SiO_2$. Two different types of nanowires are observed: thin rod-like ones with a few to a few tens of nanometers in diameter and up to a few hundred of micrometers in length and wide belt-like ones with a few micrometers in width. Room-temperature photoluminescence (PL) measurement showed that ZnSe/$SiO_2$ coaxial nanowires had an orange emission band centered at approximately 610 nm. The intensity of the orange emission from the $SiO_2$-sheathed ZnSe nanowires was enhanced significantly by annealing in a reducing atmosphere whereas it was degraded by annealing in an oxidizing atmosphere. The origins of the PL changes by annealing are discussed based on the energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analysis results.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to report the effect of Traditional Korean Medicine therapy on climacteric symptoms in premature ovarian failure patient. Methods: The patient in this case was 32 years old female. She had a history of the right side ovariectomy and antituberculous chemoteraphy caused by pelvic tuberculosis. And she was diagnosed with premature ovarian failure in October, 2007. She had a climacteric symptoms when she admitted to the OBGY department of Se-Myung University in Je-Cheon. She received Korean Medicine therapies such as herbal medicine, moxibustion, acupuncture. We evaluated patient's health status by Kupperman's index and VAS. Results: After the treatment, the climacteric symptoms in premature ovarian failure patient was improved. Conclusion: This case study shows that Korean Medicine therapies have significant effect on climacteric symptoms in premature ovarian failure.

Objective: A general prejudice exists that all herbal medicines are not good for liver. We report that herbal medicine can have positive effects on the liver, based on the improved liver function test levels observed in one patient. We also suggest the effectiveness of co-administration of herbal and western medicines. Methods: We checked the liver function test levels of one patient measured on 12 July at another hospital. We identified worse levels on 7 August, when he was first admitted to Semyung University Hospital. We measured liver function test levels of the same patient after treatment with Korean herbal medicine on 14 and 21 August during hospitalization at Semyung Hospital. We compared the figures and evaluated the effectiveness of 'Saenggangeonbi-tang' herbal medicine in the liver. Results: The patient's liver function test levels were normal on 12 July, but had become abnormal by 7 August, when he was admitted to Semyung Hospital. The cause of liver dysfunction was suggested as Atorvastatin, one of the western drugs he had started to take. Continuous treatment with Korean herbal medicine resulted in a definite improvement in liver function. Conclusion: Korean herbal medicine can provide positive improvements in liver function test levels.

Fahr disease (FD) is a rare neurological disorder characterized by presence of abnormal and associated cell loss in certain areas of the brain, mostly in basal ganglia, thalamus, cerebellum and subcortical areas. Approximately two-thirds of the patients are symptomatic. The most common neurological manifestations include movement disorders, cognitive impairment, cerebellar signs and speech disorders. We report one case of estimated FD through brain computed tomography (bilateral calcifications of basal ganglia, thalamus, centrum semiovale, subcortical white matter of occipital lobes, cerebellum). At the first time of treatment, he complained of tremors in his upper limbs. We diagnosed the patient as deficiency of qi (氣) and movement of phlegm-heat-wind (痰熱風動) type according to symptoms and treated by herbs and acupuncture of oriental medicine. During treatments, we evaluated how well the oriental medical treatments were working using visual analogue scale (VAS) and amplitude of hands. After the oriental medical treatments about tremor, VAS dropped from 10 to 2 and amplitude of hands from 20 mm to 2 mm, but the ratio of brain calcifications was not changed. This study suggests that oriental medical treatments can be applicable to improve FD.

The ischemic penumbra represents part of the hypoperfused region associated with focal brain ischemia. A practical approach is to define this region as that portion of the ischemic territory that can potentially be salvaged by timely intervention. For the prevention and treatment of ischemic stroke, antithrombotic therapy is prescribed. But medication of antiplatelet agent is only validated as prevention effect. Cheonghyulgangki-tang has been used for cerebral apoplexy, hypertension, etc. In this case report, an acute ischemic stroke patient was treated with an antiplatelet agent named Plavix and Cheonghyulgangki-tang and remarkable reduction of ischemic portion in the brain CT was observed. The result of this case suggests that oriental medical therapy could be a safe and effective intervention in acute ischemic stroke.

반데르발스 물질이란 층간 결합이 약한 반데르발스 결합으로 이루어진 이차원 층상구조를 지닌 물질을 의미하며, 이러한 반데르발스 이차원 소재를 이용한 이종접합 구조 연구는 그래핀이 발견된 이후 꾸준히 연구되고 있다. 본 논문에서는 대기압 화학기상증착법을 통해 성장된 단층 단결정 MoSe₂를 기반으로하는 반데르발스 이종접합 트랜지스터 소자에 대해 보고한다. 최적화된 공정조건에서 성장된 MoSe₂는 원자수준의 결함이 존재하지 않는 것을 밝혔으며, 이를 이용한 트랜지스터 소자 또한 우수한 특성을 보인다는 것을 밝혀내었다.
