Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the significance of pH monitoring at two levels, hypopharynx and esophagus in gastroesophageal reflux. Methods: 29 patients with pathological gastroesophageal reflux were classified into two groups: Group I had recurrent respiratory symptoms and Group II had not recurrent respiratory symptoms. The ambulatory pH monitoring was performed at the hypopharynx and the esophagus simultaneously with two channel catheter for 18~24 hr. The pathological reflux was defined when the percent of time that pH was below 4.0 exceeding the 95th percentile of normal value. Hypopharyngeal reflux was defined as the pharyngeal pH drops below 4. Results: 39 patients were performed pH monitoring at the level of hypopharynx and esophagus for 24 hours. Among 7 patients with chronic respiratory symptom, 6 patients (85.7%) have pathological esophageal reflux. Among 32 patients without chronic respiratory symptom, 23 patients (71.8%) have pathological esophageal reflux. Thus 29 out of 39 patients (74%) have pathological esophageal reflux. In the Group I, all parameters except the longest episode showed significant differences between hypopharyngeal and esophageal pH monitoring. None of parameters showed significant differences between group I and II in the pharyngeal pH monitoring. Conclusion: Regardless of presence of respiratory symptoms, the pH monitoring at the pharyngeal level in patients with gastroesophageal reflux did not showed any differences compared with the esophageal pH monitoring. Therefore we may reconsider the usefulness of hypopharyngeal pH monitoring in patients with chronic respiratory symptoms.

Purpose : We investigated the causative organism and its antibiotic susceptibility of community acquired urinary tract infection (UTI) in children at a secondary hospital to test the adequacy of the current guidelines. Methods : Children diagnosed with UTI at the Department of Pediatrics, Kwandong University MyMyongji Hospital by pyuria and bacterial growth of greater than $1.0{\times}10^5CFU/mL$ on clean catch midstream urine from January 2005 to December 2008 were studied retrospectively. The epidemiologic data, causative organism, and the antibiotic susceptibility were analyzed. Results : Sixty two children were diagnosed with sixty four cases of UTI's. Two bacteria were isolated in one case and thus data on 65 urine cultures were analyzed. The male:female ratio was 1.6:1 and 78.1% were less than 12 months of age. Escherichia coli was the predominant cause consisting of 53 cases (82.8%) of the cases. K. pneumoniae (5), Enterobacter (4), Enterococcus (1), $\beta$-streptococcus (1), Diphtheroides (1) were isolated. The antibiotic resistance of E. coli were as follows; ampicillin 69.8%, cefotaxime 1.9%, gentamicin 15.1%, amikacin 0.0%, levofloxacin 1.9%, and trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole 26.4 %. Only one case of the E. coli was extended spectrum $\beta$-lactamase (ESBL) positive. Conclusion : Compared to prior reports from other tertiary hospitals in Korea, E. coli was the predominant cause in childhood UTI and the rate of ESBL positivity was low. The antibiotic resistance was also different compared to prior reports. We conclude that a difference in the cause and antibiotic resistance of childhood UTI exists between centers and this should be taken into consideration when prescribing antibiotics for childhood UTIs.
Background: Endovenous laser treatment (EVLT) has recently been introduced as a less invasive technique for treating an incompetent small saphenous vein and many good results have been reported. The purpose of this study is to assess the efficacy and safety of EVLT combined with high ligation in patients with an incompetent small saphenous vein. Material and Method: The study included 60 patients (66 limbs) who were treated with EVLT combined with high ligation of an incompetent small saphenous vein between January 2006 and May 2009. The preoperative clinical findings, the postoperative results and the postoperative ultrasonography follow up results at 1 and 3 months were reviewed. Result: Postoperative complications were observed in 17 patients (15 limbs, 28.3%) and postoperative paresthesia occurred in 5 limbs (7.6%), but there was no deep vein thrombosis. Ultrasonography follow up at 3 month was performed in 93.9% of the limbs (62/66). The vein occlusion rate at 1 and 3 months were found to be 91.9% (57/62) and 90.3% (56/62), respectively. Conclusion: We performed EVLT combined with high ligation and ambulatory phlebectomy in patients with an incompetent small saphenous vein, and this all revealed relatively satisfactory results with a low complication rate, but it showed a relatively low cure rate even though we also performed EVLT combined with high ligation altogether. We need to determine whether EVLT combined with a high ligation procedure will improve the venous occlusion rate. We also need to investigate how we can minimize the occurrence of nerve injury.

This study was conducted to mesh selectivity of Beam trawl for shrimps fishing experiment in the coastal waters around Geomundo, South sea of Korea, during from Oct. to Nov. 2002. The selectivity parameters of big head shrimp (Solenocera melantho) have been studied on the covered con-end method. with mesh of 8, 38, 51 and 61 mm. Selection curves and selection parameters were calculated by using a logistic function S=1/(1+exp-(aCL+b)). The mesh selection master curves were estimated by S=1/(1+exp$^{({\alpha}(CL/M)+{\beta}}$), and the optimum mesh size were calculated with (L/M)50 of master curve. Optimum mesh size and selectivity master curves for the southern rough shrimp (Yrachysalambria curvirostris) and smoothshell shrimp (Parapenaeopsis tenella) optimum mesh size and selectivity master curves were estimated by big head shrimp master curves. The results obtained are summarized as follows : Selection parameters '${\alpha}$' and '${\beta}$' of the master curve for big head shrimp were 8.84 and -5.89, and The selection factor of the master curve (L/M)$_{50}$ was 0.67. The optimum mesh size of minimum length for sexual maturity for big head shrimp was 30.7 mm. Estimated (L/M)$_{50}$ for southern rough shrimp and smoothshell shrimp by using the master curve of big head shrimp was 0.73 and the optimum mesh sizes were 25.5 mm for southern rough shrimp and 16.9 mm for smoothshell shrimp, respectively.

This study investigates the free radical-scavenging activities of Amaranth (Amaranthus spp. L.) red and purple flower extracts. The methanol and hot water extracts of flower are being evaluated for its total polyphenol and flavonoid contents, scavenging activities by the DPPH and ABTS analysis, SOD-like activity, and inhibition activities of superoxide radical on the HL-60 cells and nitric oxide of the RAW 264.7 cells. The PFM (purple flower extracted with MeOH) showed the highest total phenolic and flavonoid content, 606.95 mg GAE/100 g and 254.69 mg CE/100 g, respectively. Amongst the scavenging activities of the DPPH radicals, PFM($RC_{50}=155.06{\mu}g/m{\ell}$) is the highest of all the samples. The ABTS radical-scavenging activity is also highest for PFM (53.16%) at the $250{\mu}g/m{\ell}$ concentration. But, the SOD-like activity of the PFW (purple flower extracted with hot water) increases more than 3 folds of the PFM. In the leukemia HL-60 cell, the PFM shows strongly inhibited superoxide radical generations at a concentration of $200{\mu}g/m{\ell}$ at 72.34%, which increases with 1.79 folds more than the RFW (red flower extracted with hot water). The inhibition activity of nitric oxide in Raw 264.7 cells is the highest for PMF (46.90%) at a $250{\mu}g/m{\ell}$ concentration. In conclusion, PMF show the highest flavonoid contents and the most powerful free radical-scavenging activity. Our results suggest that the increase of antioxidant activities depend on flavonoid contents. Thus, Amaranth flower can be useful for natural antioxidant compounds.
The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between sensory properties and Warner-Bratzler shear (WBS) for branded Hanwoo beef. Eight subprimal cuts purchased from the branded Hanwoo beef of 3 quality grades ($1^{++}$, $1^+$, 1) at 13 stores were determined the tenderness using WBS and evaluated the sensory properties (tenderness, flavor, juiciness, overall acceptance) by trained sensory panels. The results of sensory evaluation were analyzed by four WBS value classes (<3.46 kg, 3.46-4.09 kg, 4.09-4.72 kg, >4.72 kg). The results from the sensory evaluation (tenderness, flavor, juiciness, overall acceptance) for subprimal cuts of WBS force value less than 3.46 kg had high scores, whereas WBS force value more than 4.72 kg had low scores (p<0.05). Correlation coefficient of WBS measurements with sensory ratings was -0.67 (tenderness), -0.53 (flavor), -0.49 (juiciness), and -0.57 (overall acceptance). From these results, consumers can distinguish sensory taste of branded Hanwoo beef using WBS categories and beef industry can apply index of taste for brand Hanwoo beef by WBS categories.
Background : The antitumor effects of herpes simplex virus thymidine kinase (HSV-tk) and ganciclovir (GCV) strategies for cancer gene therapy have a the following advantages : 1) a direct cytotoxicity to HSV-tk modified cancer cells by GCV 2) a cell death by the local transfer of toxic metabolites from the HSV-tk modified cells to nearby unmodified tumor cells (bystander effect), and 3) in vivo bystander effect such as antitumor-immunity. Retroviral and adenoviral sequences can silence transgene expression in cells and mice. In this study, we investigated the above described advantages of HSV-tk/GCV strategy in Lewis lung cell and mouse lung cancer model using retroviral vector and adenoviral vector. Also, we observed whether the expression of a silenced gene can be reactivated by treating cells with butyrate. Methods : Retrovirus-HSV-tk and adenovirus-HSV-tk vectors were used for the transduction of Lewis lung carcinoma (LLC) cells. The change of HSV-tk expression by butyrate was measured by Western blol The antitumor activities containing bystander effect were observed in vivo (by MTT assay) and in vivo tumor models of various combinations of LLC and LLC-tk. Results : 1. Butyrate induced the enhancement of HSV-tk expression from adenovirally transduced cells but not from retrovirally transduced cells. 2. Both retrovirus-HSV-tk and adenovirus-HSV-tk vectors with GCV treatment were effective for killing of tumor cell in vitro and suppression of LLC tumorigenicity. Bystander effect was responsible for killing of mixture of LLC-tk and LLC in vitro and in vivo-tumorigenicity model. Conclusion : Butyrate could augment adenovirus-mediated HSV -tk gene expression. Cancer gene therapy with HSV-tk suicide gene by retroviral and adenoviral vector seems to be an effective approach for lung cancer therapy.

The purpose of this study was to develop teaching-learning plans featuring the practical problem based instruction for character education in middle school Home Economics classes. Six elements of character education including trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship were identified and 21 practical problems were drawn as a result of analyzing the contents of Home Economics curriculum. Teaching-learning plans and hand-outs for students included four steps such as problem perception, practical reasoning, action, and evaluation that comprise the practical problem based instruction to solve the practical problems. The validity of the program was evaluated by 5 professors and 10 home economics teachers with 5-Likert scale. The result of 4.28 and 4.32 on average indicated that teaching-learning plans are appropriate to character education in Home Economics classes. The follow-up study needs to be conducted to apply the teaching-learning plans to Home Economics classes.

In children, during developing occlusion stage, many studies confirm a high prevalence of gingival inflammation. Prevention, early diagnosis and treatment of gingival and periodontal disease is important because by establishing excellent oral hygiene habits in children, the risk of periodontal disease can be on the decrease in adulthood. This study evaluated the gingival conditions of 50 children$(8.5{\pm}3.1years)$ and 20 $adults(26.1{\pm}3.3 years)$ receiving clinical examination and GCF test at the pediatric dentistry of Chonbuk national university hospital in Jeonju, Korea. I estimated children's and adult's gingival states by measuring gingival crevicular fluid(GCF) using Periopaper and $Periotron^{(R)}$ 8000, gingival index, plaque index, DMFT scale. The results were as follows : 1. There are no statistical differences of GCF volume among the groups of the primary dentition, tooth erupting stage, complete eruption stage(p>0.1). But mean value of GCF is highest at the tooth erupting stage. 2. Comparing with adults, children have higher mean value of GCF volume with statistical differences (p<0.001). 3. There is statistically positive relationship between volume of GCF and gingival index (GI), plaque index(PLI) in both adults and children(GI; r=0.394, PLI ; r= 0.642). 4. There is no relationship between GCF volume and dental caries, composite resin treatments (p>0.05). But There is statistically positive relationship between GCF and orthodontic treatments(p<0.001) 5. Primary dentition has higher mean value of DMFT than permanent dentition(p<0.001). But there is no statistical relationship between GCF and DMFT (p>0.1).

Parents in South Korea are known for their high level of educational zeal for their children. As a result, their children usually take extra classes in institutions as well as participate in other extracurricular activities such as sports and music. The purpose of this study was to examine the lifestyle and dietary behaviors of Korean elementary students involved in such activities. The total number of subjects was 550 fourth to sixth graders in elementary schools in Sejong, Korea. Of the total subjects, 88.0% were involved in extracurricular classes or other activities for an average of 7.34 hours/week. The subjects were assigned to one of four groups based on the degree of extracurricular activities: No extra-class (n=66), Low extra-class (1${\leq}$taking time<5 hours/week, n=118), Medium extra-class (5${\leq}$taking time<10 hours/week, n=184), and High extra-class (taking time${\geq}$10 hours/week, n=182). More subjects in the High extra-class group went to bed late (P<0.01), were under stress (P<0.01), and skipped breakfast, compared with those in the other groups. The ratio of students who answered 'I go to an institute without a meal' (P<0.01), 'I prepare a meal for myself' (P=0.053), or 'I eat out before going to an institute' (P<0.01) was higher in the High extra-class group than in the Low extra-class group. The frequency of eating fast food was higher in the High extra-class group, compared with the other groups. These results indicate that a high amount of extracurricular studies may have a negative effect on the children's lifestyles and dietary behaviors. Therefore, this study alerts parents to the potential harm of excessive extracurricular activities to their children's health.
