  • ZhangSanRoei's "NanKyungHeoJuJenJung" is a book which is composed of 'HeoJu'(collection of traditional explanations) and 'JenJung'(his own ideas). In this research, I considerd of "NanKyungHeoJuJenJung"'s theory of 'meridian' mainly by the original text. ZhangSanRoei said that it is right in the traditional theory that the 12 channel is always arranged 'pulse', and 'kikyung 8 channel' is subsidiary, so both of them are important. But, he was influenced by western medicine, he criticized that 12 channels' lenth is 16zhang2chuk, and are stared in 'Sutaeyinpaekyung' and left kidney right myungmun theory.

  • The present study investigated whether electroacupuncture (EA) can alleviate hypertension and concomitant disorders such as decreased kidney weight and elevation of serum creatinine in spontaneous hypertensive rats. EA (2 Hz, 3 mA, 10 min) was applied to Joksamni (ST36) once daily for 7 days. Body weight, blood pressure and heart rate were measured on Day 0, 2, 6, 8, 10 and 12, and kidney weight and serum creatinine levels were examined after sacrifice (on Day 12 after last examination). In the ST36 group, the blood pressure were significantly decreased from 6thdays and its effects lasted up to Day12 (up to 5days after cessation of acupuncture), compared to control. And, significant decreases of the heart rates after EA at ST36 were also observed on Day 2, 6, and 8. However, there were no significant differences in daily body weight, kidney weight and serum creatinine between acupuncture and control group. These results showed that EA at ST36 caused anti-hypertension by decreasing blood pressure and heart rates in spontaneous hypertenstive rats, although it failed to alleviate concomitant disorders such as the decreased kidney weight and elevation of serum creatinine shown in hypertensive rats.

  • Objectives : Saam acupuncture is one of the indigenous therapeutic modalities in traditional Korean medicine. In this study, the neuroprotective effect of Saam acupuncture of kidney tonification was investigated using 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP)-treated mice. Methods : Twelve-week-old male C57BL/6 mice were intraperitoneally administered with 30 mg/kg of MPTP at 24-h intervals for 5 days and acupuncture stimulation at LU8, KI7, SP3 and KI3 was performed once a day for 12 days from the first MPTP injection. The pole test and the rotarod test were performed to evaluate motor function, and dopaminergic neuronal survival in the substantia nigra (SN) and striatum was evaluated using tyrosine-hydroxylase immunohistochemistry. Results : MPTP administration caused behavioral impairment and dopaminergic neuronal death in the nigrostriatal pathway. Whereas the Saam acupuncture treatment alleviated the MPTP-induced motor dysfunction and dopaminergic neuronal death in the SN and striatum. Conclusions : Saam acupuncture of kidney tonification can alleviate the MPTP-induced motor dysfunction and dopaminergic neuronal death in the nigrostriatal pathway, suggesting a possible role for acupuncture in the treatment of Parkinson's disease.

  • We translated 'poems of prograde' and 'poems of acupoints' which in the poems of acupoints and based on that, We considered the circulating direction and region of twelve meridian comparing the notion in common today with that in the 'poems of acupoints'. Finally, we got the conclusion like below 1. About circulating line of lung meridian, it'll be proper to correct that lung meridian passes through inner edge of biceps brachii muscle like heart and pericardium meridian. 2. On the part of kidney meridian in 'poems of prograde', it's right to be corrected as the circulating line that thru the inner line of vertebrae, enters heart and lung, and scattered tho breast. 3. 'Poems of prograde' can be separated two kinds go by starting-acupoints, ending- acupoints. First is 'poems of prograde' is begun from the end of members and ended in the body. Second is from Jungbu(中府) to Kimun(期門), circulating the members and the body with no ending. 4. On the above, we can find first 'poems of prograde' in "Chimkudaejeon(鍼灸大全)", "YangKyungjechimkujeonso(楊敬齋鍼灸全書)", "Chimkudaeseong(鍼灸大成)", also second can be found in "Neungmunjeonsudonginjihyul(凌門傳授銅人指穴)", "Chimkushinso(鍼灸神書)", "Kumchimbijeon(金針秘傳)", "Kyungrakhoepyun(經絡匯編), "Kyungrakko(經絡考)", "Jungsohoechamdongindosol(重西匯參銅人圖說)", "Kyungrakdoko(經脈圖考)", "ChimkuChuiyoung(針灸聚英)", "Shipsakyoungbalhwee(十四經發揮)", "Jakushimbopyokyul(刺灸心法要訣)", "Yukyoungdoik(類經圖翼)", "Yihakimmun(醫學入門)", etc. 5. Drawing an inference from above, the forms of "Jokbishibilmaek(足臂十一脈)" and "YumYangshibilmaek(陰陽十一脈)" are in "Mawangtoebaekso(馬王堆帛書)", are rather foreforms of circulation line that from the end of members and ended in the body than meridian prograde.

  • To have effective treatment for shoulder arm pain, we searched the cause, symptom, etiology, classification of the pain areas, acupuncture points, and muscles along the meridians, and acquired the following results. Shoulder-pain is mainly divided into the malfunction of viscera and entrails, damage due to the weakness of essence and qi, abnormal status of muscle function, change of joints, disease in the nerve and vessel, and the internal injury due to seven modes of emotions. Pain of shoulder joints are pain in the local area of shoulder joints, referred pain of shoulder, neck, and shoulder-arm, numbnes and swelling of muscle, and muslce weakness. Shoulder-arm pain is classified as four types of pain: shoulder-joint pain, shoulder-back pain, shoulder-chest pain, and shoulder-arm-elbow pain. And shoulder-arm-elbow pain is again divided into the shoulder-blade pain, shoulder-arm pain, shoulder-elbow pain. The related meridians on shoulder pain are the three yin meridians of hand, Kidney Meridian, Conception Meridian, three yang meridians of hand, Bladder Meridian, Governor Meridian Acupuncture points for shoulder pain are in the acupuncture points of the 10 meridians and a-shi points. Thre related meridian muscles on shoulder-pain are the three yin and yang meridians of hand, and their related muscles are the ones that are connected with the front, back, and chest side muscles of shoulder joints, and the ones that are connected with the front and back side muscles of arm.

  • Objectives : The aim of this study was to investigate the different of yangdorak diagnosis between low back pain patients and medical checkup group. Methods : We analyzed the measurement value of yangdorak on 103 patients with low back pain and 103 medical checkup persons in Korean males from March 1st, 2007 to September 30th, 2008 by using yangdorak(MEDIRA, Neomyth Co., Korea). Results : 1. In comparing results on the yangdorak general mean, low back pain group is statistically significant in comparison with medical checkup group(p<0.001). 2. In comparing results on each meridian yangdorak value, they were statistically significant between two groups(p<0.001). 3. In comparing result on the distance of yangdorak value from the mean, they were statistically significant between two groups at the Bladder-meridian(p<0.05), but not at the Kidney-meridian. Conclusions : This results suggest that yangdorak may be used for a method to objective clinical examination. But further studies are required for a use of practical indicator.

  • Objective : Assuming that the characteristic of meridian system has been similar to this of electric potentials in human body and that measurements of electric potential at well(井穴) and sea (合穴) points in branches of the twelve meridians(WSBTM) will be representative of measurements of the twelve meridians, to measure the electric potentials of 13 patients with Lumbago due to strain and contusion(좌섬요통<挫閃腰痛>, LSC), to find out the characteristic of meridian system in patients with LSC. Methods : Electric potentials of well and sea points in the meridians in twenty one patients with the pain in the lion diagnosed as LSC were repeatedly measured by physiograph(PowerLab). Measurements of those electrical potentials were analyzed by factor analysis. Results : The electric potentials of WSBTM at the left side were divided into four factors. On the other hand those at the right side Were divided into four factors. Conclusion : In conclusion, their electrical potentials at the left and right side were factors which are different from each side. Thus electrical potentials of well and sea points might be the representative meridian to show their characteristics.

  • Objective : This study researched the application of Sa-am acupuncture for the treatment of hiccup. Methods : We investigated the literature for Sa-am acupuncture treatment and traditional acupuncture treatment for hiccup. Result & Conclusion : In traditional oriental medicine, hiccup is considered to be caused by uprising stomach gi, whereas, in Sa-am acupuncture, it is considered to be caused by weakness and impurity of lung gi. In Sa-am acupuncture, hiccup is divided into five classes; reverse hiccup (treated with large intestine tonification), wind hiccup (treated with liver tonification), fire hiccup (treated with heart tonification), damp hiccup (treated with spleen tonification) and cold hiccup (treated with kidney tonification). In traditional oriental medicine, hiccup is treated by way of lowering the uprising stomach gi, while, in Sa-am acupuncture, hiccup is treated by way of removing whichever of the original cause of hiccups (impurity of large intestine, damage to liver, dry heat of heart, impairment of spleen, exhaustion of kidney) caused the weakness and the impurity of lung gi. In Sa-am acupuncture, the therapeutic mode for all the five causes of hiccups is tonification mode.

  • Objectives : This study was performed to investigate the effect of invasive laser acupuncture therapy with green light (LAT-G) at HT7(Sinmun), SP3(Taebaek) on the blood pressure in hypertensive rat induced by two kidney one clip. Methods : The experiments were performed on Sprague Dawley rats. 2K1C hypertension model was prepared by constricting the left renal artery with a sliver clip. Animals were divided into four groups, which were simple acupuncture treatment group with straight needle insertion on the square(AT-SS), acupuncture treatment group with reducing manipulation in the opposite channel direction(AT-RD), laser acupuncture treatment group with green light 532 nm, 10mW power in the opposite channel direction(LAT-G10) and laser acupuncture treatment group with green light 532 nm, 20mW power in the opposite channel direction(LAT-G20). The treatments were performed once per two days for 10 days. Results : Body weight was increased significantly in LAT-G20 group compared with AT-RD group. The blood pressure was significantly decreased in LAT-G20 and LAT-G10 groups compared with AT-SS group. Conclusions : These results suggest that green laser acupuncture therapy at SP3 ${\cdot}$ HT7 is more effective than straight needle insertion on the square for controlling hypertension. It is possible that invasive green laser acupuncture therapy (532 nm) can be used as a reducing method of the traditional acupuncture techniques.

  • Objectives: To find the potential acupuncture points by using Trypan blue staining on the skin of rat and Nude mouse. Methods: 0.4% Trypan blue was applied to the skin of rat or Nude mouse previously treated by surfactant. Washing by warm saline was followed after enough application of trypan blue and surfactant. Frequency of Trypan blue application should be varied to the experimental animals' condition for visualizing significant spots. Results: Blue spots appeared roughly in symmetry along kidney meridian or stomach meridian. Several spots outside of kidney or stomach meridian were also observed; however, the detail stereoscopic images of those blue spots were slightly different according to the position blue-colored. DiI signals were visualized along blood vessel after DiI injection into the Trypan blue-visualized blue spots. Conclusion: Our method to visualize the potential acupuncture points as a blue spot on rat and Nude mouse skins may contribute to the next step for finding specific flowing channels among blue spots.
