Powdery mildew of Paprika caused by Leveillula taurica has been a serious problem in greenhouse. It is an unusual endophytic powdery mildew because the mycelia grow inside the leaf, such that the pale yellow lesions on adaxial surfaces appear first and the white powdery lesion/signs develop later on the corresponding to the spots of the abaxial leaf surface, where the conidiophores are typically emerge through the stomatal opening. Although one foliar application of cooking oil and yolk mixture(COY) to the foliage was not practically effective enough, two or three, weekly application of COY to the foliage at either 0.3 or 0.5% concentration resulted in excellent control against powdery mildew with disease index less/lower than 1, respectively. This treatment could provide protection for three weeks, which, we believe, is not only cost-effective, but also environment-friendly. Powdery mildew fungus was affected by COY treatment quickly which is recognizable in three days. Net photosynthesis and evapotranspiration was remarkably reduced by powdery mildew infection compared to healthy leaves, suggesting that prevention and early protection is the most critical strategy for peak paprika fruit yield. Moreover, COY treatment did not adversely affect the photosynthesis and evapotranspiration of foliages.

Groundwater recharge rates were estimated and compared in a headwater catchment at the Gwangneung Supersite using three different methods: water-table fluctuation (WTF), mass balance, and hydrograph separation techniques. Data were obtained during the rainy season from June to September 2005. Two different WTF methods estimated the groundwater recharge rate as 25.9% and 23.6%. The mass balance calculation of chloride ions indicated recharge rates of 13.4% on average. Baseflow separation using chloride ion as a tracer from six storm hydrographs produced a 14.0% net baseflow rate on average. Because of the implicit assumption of a long-term steady state without storage change, recharge rates calculated by mass balance and hydrograph separation were smaller than those done with WTF methods, which include the amount of increased storage due to the water-level rise. Subsequently, the WTF method is superior to others in the estimation of groundwater recharge rate to comprehend the dynamic characteristics of the hydrologic cycle.

This study was conducted to investigate the photosynthetic characters of Populus alba${\times}$glandulosa cuttings in response to elevated $CO_2$ concentration and air temperature for selecting tree species adaptive to climate change. The cuttings were grown in environment controlled growth chambers with two combinations of $CO_2$ concentration and air temperature conditions: (i) $22^{\circ}C$ + $CO_2$ 380 ${\mu}mol$$mol^{-1}$ (control) and (ii) $27^{\circ}C$ + $CO_2$ 770 ${\mu}mol$$mol^{-1}$ (elevated) for almost three months. The cuttings under the elevated treatment showed reduced tree height and photosynthetic pigment contents such as chlorophyll and carotenoid. In particular, the elevated treatment resulted in a marked reduction in the chlorophyll a closely associated with $CO_2$ fixative reaction system. Different levels of reduction in photosynthetic characters were found under the elevated treatment. A decrease was noted in photochemical reaction system parameters: net apparent quantum yield (7%) and photosynthetic electron transport rate (14%). Moreover, a significant reduction was obvious in $CO_2$ fixative reaction system parameters: carboxylation efficiency (52%) and ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate(RuBP) regeneration rate (24%). These results suggest that the low level of photosynthetic capacity may be attributed to the decreased $CO_2$ fixative reaction system rather than photochemical reaction system.

To explore hydrolysis methods for the efficient manufacture of sugar solutions from the freshwater alga Water-net (Hydrodictyon reticulatum, HR), acid hydrolysis, enzymatic hydrolysis, and combined hydrolysis (acid followed by enzymatic hydrolysis) were investigated. In the one-step acid hydrolysis, the reaction of 8% solids content using 2% sulfuric acid at $120^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour was desirable. In this case, glucose 27.44 g 100 g $DM^{-1}$ could be obtained from the HR-d13 samples. In the two-step acid hydrolysis, the primary hydrolysis (HR powder : 72% sulfuric acid = 1 g : 1.5 mL) was carried out for 1 hour at $60^{\circ}C$, and then the secondary hydrolysis was done for 1 hour at $120^{\circ}C$ after addition of distilled water 23.5 mL. In this case, glucose 35.11 g/100 g DM could be obtained from the HR-d13 samples. In the combined hydrolysis, 25% solids content using 2% hydrochloric acid were reacted for 1 hour at $120^{\circ}C$, and then citrate buffer and hydrolysis enzyme complexes (E1 1.0 mL+E2 0.2 mL $g^{-1}$ dried matter) were added and reacted for 1 - 2 days at $50^{\circ}C$. In this case, glucose 33.5 g 100 g $DM^{-1}$ could be obtained from the HR-d23+26 samples. In conclusion, combined hydrolysis was likely to be more useful saccharification method of HR biomass at a practical level, considering the glucose productivity, generation of fermentation-inhibiting substances (hydroxyl methyl furfural, furfural), and limited use of strong acid.
Excess tritium analysis was peformed to verify whether or not cold fusion occurs during electrolysis of heavy water in the current density range of 83~600 mA/$\textrm{cm}^2$ for a period of 24 ~ 48 hours with use of palladium electrodes of seven different processing treatments and geometries. The extent of recombination of D$_2$ and $O_2$gases in the electrolytic cell was measured for the calculation of accurate enthaplpy values. The behavior and interaction of hydrogen atoms with defects in Pd electrodes were examined using the Sieverts gas charging and the positron annihilation(PA) method. Slight enrichment of tritium observed was attributed to electrolytic enrichment but not to the formation of a by-product of cold fusion. The extent of recombination of D$_2$and $O_2$gases was 32%. Hence the excess heat measured during the electrolysis was considered to be due to the exothermic reaction of recombination but not to nuclear fusion. Lifetime results from the PA measurements on the Pd electrodes indicated that hydrogen atoms could be trapped at dislocations and vacancies in the electrodes and that dislocations were slightly more preferred sites than vacancies. It was also inferred from R parameters that the formation of hydrides was accompanied by generation of mostly dislocations. Doppler broadening results of the Pd electrodes indicated that lattiec defect sites where positrons were trapped first increased and then decreased, and this cycle was repeated as electrolysis continued. It can be inferred from PA measurements on the cold-rolled Pd and the isochronally annealed Pd hydride specimens that microvoid-type defects existed in the hydrogen-charged electrode specimen.
The wasabi was planted in glasshouse to investigate the effect shade level (0, 10, 30, 70%) on growth and photosynthetic response. The net photosynthetic rate and stomatal conductance were the highest under 10% shading rate in greenhouse. The lowest transpiration rate was in the non-shading treatment. 70% shading rate significantly reduced in photosynthetic characteristics. The number of leaf was decreased with increasing of shading rate. Leaf and petiole weight was the highest 10% shading and then followed by the non-shading treatment. Number of leaves, leaf, petiole and total weight were severely declined in 70% shading treatment. Shading rate (0%, 10%, and 30%) did not significantly influenced on the leaf length, leaf width and root growth. 10% shading level was the most effective for wasabi leaf production in hydroponics.

Semi-empirical MO calculations, EHT, CNDO/2, MINDO/3, and MNDO met hods, were performed on various geometries of n-butane, n-alkyl radical and tetramethylene diracal (triplet) in order to compare eigenvalue and eigenvector properties with those obtained by STO-3G method. All methods predicted the same relative order of stabilities of various geometries for n-butane; geometrical preferences were found to be dominated by one-electron factor, ${\pi}$-orbital energy changes being more impotant in the semi-empirical methods. The hyperconjugative energy changes accompanying structural changes from $(n-{\sigma}{\ast})_{trans}$ to (n-{\sigma}{\ast})cis were underestimated in the EHT, CNDO/2 and MINDO/3, whereas those were overestimated in the MNDO. The net destabilizing effect of $(n-{\sigma}{\ast})_{trans}$ structure was mainly due to the large internuclear energy involved in the structure. Through-space interaction between $n_1$ and $n_2$ orbitals of diradical caused energy gap narrowing of ${\Delta}E_{sp}$ and ${\Delta}{\varepsilon}={\varepsilon}_0$-${\varepsilon}_{av}$; through-space interaction had opposing effect to that of through-bond interaction. Due to the less severe neglect of differential overlaps in the MNDO, this energy gap narrowing effect appeared amplified in the MNDO. In general orbital properties were found to be reproduced satisfactorily, but eigenvalue properties were not, in all the semi-empirical methods especially when ${\sigma}-{\sigma}{\ast}$ and n-$n-{\sigma}{\ast}$interactions were involved.
Organic carbon distribution and carbon budget of a Pinus densiflora forest in the Songgye valley of Mt. Worak National Park were investigated. Carbon in above and below ground standing biomass, litter layer, and soil organic carbon were measured from May 2011 through April 2012. For the estimation of carbon budget, soil respiration was measured. The amount of carbon allocated to above and below ground biomass was 52.25 and 14.52 ton C $ha^{-1}$. Amount of organic carbon in annual litterfall was 4.71 ton C $ha^{-1}$. Amount of organic carbon within 50cm soil depth was 58.56 ton C $ha^{-1}$ 50cm-$depth^{-1}$. Total amount of organic carbon in this Pinus densiflora forest was estimated to 130.04 ton C $ha^{-1}$. Amount of organic carbon in tree layer, shrub and herb layer was 4.12, 0.10 and 0.04 ton C $ha^{-1}yr^{-1}$ and total amount of organic carbon was 4.26 ton C $ha^{-1}yr^{-1}$. Amount of organic carbon returned to the forest via litterfall was 1.62 ton C $ha^{-1}yr^{-1}$. The amount of carbon evolved through soil respiration was 6.25 ton C $ha^{-1}yr^{-1}$. The amount of carbon evolved through microbial respiration and root respiration was 3.19 and 3.06 ton C $ha^{-1}yr^{-1}$. The amount of organic carbon absorbed from the atmosphere of this Pinus densiflora forest was 1.07 ton C $ha^{-1}yr^{-1}$ when it was estimated from the difference between Net Primary Production and microbial respiration.

Studies have tried to apply remote sensing technology, a non-destructive survey method, instead of the existing destructive survey, which requires relatively large labor input and a long time to estimate chlorophyll content, which is an important indicator for evaluating the growth of fruit trees. This study was conducted to non-destructively evaluate the chlorophyll content of pear tree leaves using unmanned aerial vehicle-based hyperspectral imagery for two years(2021, 2022). The reflectance of the single bands of the pear tree canopy extracted through image processing was band rationed to minimize unstable radiation effects depending on time changes. The estimation (calibration and validation) models were developed using machine learning algorithms of elastic-net, k-nearest neighbors(KNN), and support vector machine with band ratios as input variables. By comparing the performance of estimation models based on full band ratios, key band ratios that are advantageous for reducing computational costs and improving reproducibility were selected. As a result, for all machine learning models, when calibration of coefficient of determination (R2)≥0.67, root mean squared error (RMSE)≤1.22 ㎍/cm2, relative error (RE)≤17.9% and validation of R2≥0.56, RMSE≤1.41 ㎍/cm2, RE≤20.7% using full band ratios were compared, four key band ratios were selected. There was relatively no significant difference in validation performance between machine learning models. Therefore, the KNN model with the highest calibration performance was used as the standard, and its key band ratios were 710/714, 718/722, 754/758, and 758/762 nm. The performance of calibration showed R2=0.80, RMSE=0.94 ㎍/cm2, RE=13.9%, and validation showed R2=0.57, RMSE=1.40 ㎍/cm2, RE=20.5%. Although the performance results based on validation were not sufficient to estimate the chlorophyll content of pear tree leaves, it is meaningful that key band ratios were selected as a standard for future research. To improve estimation performance, it is necessary to continuously secure additional datasets and improve the estimation model by reproducing it in actual orchards. In future research, it is necessary to continuously secure additional datasets to improve estimation performance, verify the reliability of the selected key band ratios, and upgrade the estimation model to be reproducible in actual orchards.
