  • Present study was undertaken to establish the modified Broca's indices to estimate standard body weight by using a total of 5,496 insured persons who were medically examined at the Honam Medical Room of Dong Bang Life Insurance Company Ltd. from January, 1983 to January, 1986. The results were as follows: 1. Effects of Growth Performance and Carcass Characteristics by Fermented Barley Grain Feeding in Post-fattening Hanwoo Steers (거세한우 비육후기 보리곡실 발효사료 급여에 따른 성장과 도체특성에 미치는 효과)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the proper feeding level and duration of fermented barley grain feed before harvesting to improve the availability of barley for feed. Trial 1 was to investigate the proper feeding amount of fermented barley grain fermented feed, and we prepared 32 heads (603.4 ± 42.7kg) of 22-month-old Hanwoo steer (603.4 ± 42.7kg) for 8 heads in 4 treatment groups. 48 heads (625.8 ± 13.1kg) for Trial 2 were used for 12heads per 4 treatments, and were reared for about 9 months until 30 months of age. Trial 1 is treated a Control group that feed 10㎏ of concentrate, replaces 10% fermented barley grain feed(FBGF) of the control by (TRT 1) and 20% (TRT 2) and 30%(TRT 3). Concentrate and FBGF fed 9, 2.1 kg, 8, 4.2 kg, 7 and 7, 6.3 kg on each treatments respectively and 1.5 kg of rice straw for forage. In Trial 2, 10% of alternative diets were judged to be appropriate, and the control of 9kg of diets and barley grain fermented feeds were used to determine the appropriate feeding period. The treatments were 3 months before shipment (TRT 1), 6 months (TRT 2) and 9 months (TRT32). Each treatment group had 8 and 2.1 kg of concentrate and barley grain fermentation, respectively. As a feed, rice straw was fed to 1.5 kg. The daily gains per treatment were higher in TRT 1 and TRT 3 was similar to the Control. Body weight and daily gain during the test period were higher in TRT 1 fed 10% barley grain fermented feed. TRT 2 was the highest at 6.13, and TRT 3 was 6.0, which was higher than 5.63 of TRT 1 and 5.5 of Control.

Effects of Spent Mushroom Substrates Addition on Eating Behavior of Growing Hanwoo (버섯잔사 첨가급여가 육성기 한우 채식행동에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effects of dietary supplementation of spent mushroom substrates on eating time, ruminating and resting time of growing Hanwoo. A total of eighteen growing Hanwoo $(357.0{\pm}2.9kg)$ were allocated into three feeding groups and assigned to three dietary treatments: Control (C : concentrate + rice straw; 5.32 kg + intake of free), T1 (concentrate + spent mushroom substrates + rice straw; 5.32 kg +0.82 kg + intake of free) and T2 (concentrate + spent mushroom substrates + rice straw; 5.32 kg + 1.64 kg + intake of free). Intake of rice straw was the highest at C (2.66 kg), while T2 (2.03 kg) was the lowest. But total intake and NDF intake were highly in order of T2 > T1 > C (p<0.05). Eating time was similar in C and T1 with 289.3 and 290.5 minutes, and that in T1 was the shortest with 236.0 minutes (p<0.05). When spent mushroom substrates were increased by 0 (0.0 kg), 15 (0.82 kg) and 30% (1.64 kg) of concentrate, chewing time was decreased linearly from 451.0 and 402.3 to 359.5 minutes (p<0.05), which was due to the particle size of very small feed. Number of bolus, number of chews, number of chews/bolus and FVI (chewing time/intake of feed 1kg) showed the highest to all in C. But ruminating time per bolus was the longest in T2 (69.4 min.), and number of bolus per minute was the highest at T1 (1.07 no.) Eating rate, ruminating efficiency and chewing efficiency were significantly higher (p<0.05) in T1 and T2 than in C, which was due to increased feed intake and the small particle size of spent mushroom substrates. When fed with concentrate, Hanwoo group did united behavior in the all treatment (C, T1 and T2). But group behavior in ruminating and resting was hardly influenced by feeding levels of roughage. Consequently, spent mushroom substrates could be used up to from 15 to 30% in growing Hanwoo roughage source without any harmful effect on eating behavior.

Studies on Growth Enviromental and Inorganic Components of Korean Native Tea Plants(Camellia sinensis O. kuntze) (한국(韓國) 자생차(自生茶)의 생육지 토양과 엽중 무기성분 함량)

  • To characterize the growth environment, inorganic composition and morphological chracteristics of leaves of Korean tea plant, soil and tea leaf samples were collected from 15 locations and analyzed. The chemical characteristics of soils were in range of pH 4.09~6.15, OM 23.9~72.6g/kg, available phosphate less than 300mg/kg, K $0.8{\sim}2.5cmol^+/kg$, Na $tr{\sim}0.17cmol^+/kg$, Ca $1.0{\sim}6.2cmol^+/kg$, and Mg $0.3{\sim}2.1cmol^+/kg$. The contents of Ni. Cr, Zn. Cu, Pb, and Cd were at the level less than natural content in upland soil. Most of the sample soils were sandy loamy and loamy texture. The native tea plants were mainly grown in bamboo thicket or in forest. The leaf sizes of tea plants were $6.85{\pm}1.75{\times}2.6{\pm}0.5cm$, lateral vein number $14.2{\pm}2.7$, and crenated number $58.5{\pm}11.2$, and the leaf color was thin to dark green. The contents of $NH_4{^+}$, $Na^+$, $K^+$, $Mg^{2+}$ and $Ca^{2+}$ in tea leaves were in range of 30.5~47.7, 45.5~164.5, 16,998~25,431, 1.590~2,392 and 1,085~1,958mg/kg, respectively. The contents of $F^-$, $Cl^-$, $NO_3{^-}$, $PO_4{^{3-}}$ and $SO_4{^{2-}}$ were in range of 21.2~63.2, 126.4~257.9, 108.5~185.9, 1,270~1.819, and $954{\sim}1,670mg/kg$, respectively. The leaf size of native tea plant grown widlly in Shunchun Changchun-ri, Hwasun Ssangbongsa, Kuryoi Chonunsa, Bosong Daewonsa and Namhae Boriam was as large as those of Yabukita. Japan cultiver, grown at Kangjin Jangwon tea field.

Growth Performance and Fat Deposition in Woorimatdag2 Breeder Pullets in Response to Dietary Level of Energy (사료 에너지 수준이 우리맛닭 2호 종계 육성기의 생산성과 지방침착에 미치는 영향)

  • This study investigated the growth performance and fat deposition in Woorimatdag2 (WMD2) breeder pullets in response to dietary levels of apparent metabolizable energy (AMEn). A total of 144 four-week-old WMD2 breeder pullets were weighed and equally divided into four dietary groups, each with four replications until 16 weeks of age. The dietary groups were fed diets formulated with AMEn levels; 2,600, 2,700, 2,800, and 2,900 kcal/kg. The results showed that birds fed 2,800 and 2,900 kcal/kg were higher (P<0.05) in body weight and weight gain compared to those fed 2,600 kcal/kg. Feed conversion ratio was significantly (P<0.05) improved in 2,900 kcal/kg-fed group compared to 2,600 and 2,700 kcal/kg-fed groups. The laying ages of first egg were earlier (P<0.05) in 2,600 and 2,700 kcal/kg-fed pullets than 2,900 kcal/kg-fed those. Meanwhile, the higher (P<0.05) fat (%) into both liver and abdomen was confirmed in groups fed 2,700, 2,800, and 2,900 kcal/kg compared to group fed 2,600 kcal/kg. Furthermore, blood concentrations of AST and ALT were significantly (P<0.05) increased in group fed 2,900 kcal/kg compared to groups fed 2,600, 2,700, and 2,800 kcal/kg. Accordingly, we suggest that 2,600 kcal AMEn/kg is appropriate for WMD2 breeders during growing phase, which may improve their productivity and health of those during laying phase.

Effect of Flywheel Weight on the Vibration of Diesel Engine (플라이휠 중량(重量)이 디젤 기관(機關)의 진동(振動)에 미치는 영향(影響))

  • Most of small size diesel engines are widely used with the same size and weight flywheel in the levels of 6.0kW and 7.5kW. This study was conducted to obtain basic data which affect the engine performance of the power tiller. The flywheel weight was considered as a major factor in this research. Basically, fuel consumption ratio, motoring loss, torque, vibration and mechanical efficiency of the engine were measured and analyzed on four levels of flywheel weight, 32.2, 29.4, 26.2 and $24.2kg_f$, respectively. Results were obtained as follows: 1. The weights of flywheel were $23.7kg_f$ from design program of JSME and $24.5kg_f$ from ASME and SAE design criteria. Therefore, the flywheel weight of $32.2kg_f$ might be reduced about $8kg_f$ in 7.5kW engine. 2. The rated outputs of 6.0kW and 7.5kW engine were actually 7.43kW and 7.85kW, respectively. When flywheel weight was reduced from $32.2kg_f$ to $24.2kg_f$, outputs were increased from 7.43kW to 7.70kW in 6.0kW engine and from 7.85kW to 8.25kW in 7.5kW engine. 3. When the flywheel weight was reduced from $32.2kg_f$ to $24.2kg_f$, fuel consumption ratio was decreased from 300.8 to 296.8g/kW-hr in 6.0kW engine and also from 313.6 to 312.8g/kW-hr in 7.5 kW engine, respectively. 4. When the flywheel weight was reduced from $32.2kg_f$ to $24.2kg_f$, mechanical efficiency of engine was increased from 76.1% to 76.8% in 6.0kW engine and also from 76.7% to 77.0% in 7.5kW engine, respectively. 5. When the flywheel weight was reduced from $32.2kg_f$ to $24.2kg_f$, vibration was decreased at X-axis and Z-axis in 6.0kW engine, however, slightly increased at Y-axis in 6.0kW engine and at all axes in 7.5kW engine. 6. When the flywheel weight was reduced from $32.2kg_f$ to $24.4kg_f$ motoring loss was decreased from 2.33kW to 1.75kW in 6.0kW engine and also from 2.46kW to 1.84kW in 7.5kW engine.

Soil Organic Carbon of Soil Series from 2003 to 2010 in Korea

  • Soil organic carbon (SOC) of soil series is necessary to calculate soil C sequestration due to IPCC default categorized by climate regions and by soil types. The 3,400 thousand data were downloaded from agricultural soil information system and analyzed to get averages of soil order, soil series, and textual family for the three different soil management practices in Korea. The SOC content was $13.3{\pm}5.38g\;kg^{-1}$ in paddy field, $13.7{\pm}7.19g\;kg^{-1}$ in upland field, and $15.2{\pm}8.22g\;kg^{-1}$ in orchard soil, respectively. As SOC in orchard was 10% greater than that in upland, orchard must be managed with applying compost. The SOCs of inceptisols, which was largely distributed in Korea, were $13.6{\pm}5.48g\;kg^{-1}$ in paddy field, $14.1{\pm}7.38g\;kg^{-1}$ in upland field, and $15.3{\pm}8.20g\;kg^{-1}$ in orchard soil, respectively. The SOCs of alfisols were $13.6{\pm}4.96g\;kg^{-1}$ in paddy field, $13.7{\pm}6.99g\;kg^{-1}$ in upland field, and $15.6{\pm}8.59g\;kg^{-1}$ in orchard soil, respectively. The SOCs of entisols were $11.7{\pm}5.16g\;kg^{-1}$ in paddy field, $12.8{\pm}7.05g\;kg^{-1}$ in upland field, and $13.7{\pm}7.81g\;kg^{-1}$ in orchard soil, respectively. The SOCs of ultisols were $12.7{\pm}4.79g\;kg^{-1}$ in paddy field, $12.7{\pm}6.22g\;kg^{-1}$ in upland field, and $16.3{\pm}8.49g\;kg^{-1}$ in orchard soil, respectively. The fact that soils containing greater clay content in textual family had also more SOC content revealed that SOC could be also dependent on some soil properties as well as soil order. Because SOC differences among soil series representing same textual family were greater than those among textual family, SOC differences should be mainly affected by management practices such as compost application.

Selection of Promising Barley Cultivar for Silage at Paddy Field of Honam Region (호남지역 답리작에서 사료용 총체보리 우량품종 선발)

  • This experiment was conducted to compare the agronomic characteristics and productivity of barley at paddy field of Iksan (National Honam Agricultural Experiment) from 1998 to 2001. The most fast 50% heading stage date variety was Keunalbori, Tapkolbori and Sodunchalbori, but Kinssalbori was very late as 3th May. The average dry matter (DM) content of naked and hulled barley were 37.9% and 37.1%, respectively. Saessalbori and Naehanssalbori of naked barley showed the highest in DM yield by 11,260 kg/ha and 11,160 kg/ha but the DM yield of Kinssalbori was low by 7,530 kg/ha. And Milyang 92, Keunalbori and Tapkolbori of hulled barley showed the highest in DM yield by 12,730 kg/ha, 12,320 kg/ha and 12,300 kg/ha but the DM yield of Olbori was low by 6,660 kg/ha. Acid detergent fiber (ADF), neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and total digestible nutrient (TDN) content of naked varieties was 30.3%, 60.8% and 65.1%, and ADF, NDF and TDN content of hulled varieties was 33.6%, 61.1% and 62.4%, respectively. And Tapkolbori showed the highest grain yield by 6,370 kg/ha. According to the results obtained from this study, it is suggested that "Milyang 92, Keunalbori and Tapkolbori" would be recommendable for fall sown barley cultivar for at paddy field in Honam region.

Effects of Feeding Purified Zearalenone Contaminated Diets with or without Clay Enterosorbent on Growth, Nutrient Availability, and Genital Organs in Post-weaning Female Pigs

  • The effects of different levels of natural clay enterosorbent on the growth, nutrient availability, and genital organs of post-weaning female pigs fed with an addition of zearalenone (ZEA) were investigated in the study. A total of thirty-five post-weaning gilts ($L{\times}Y{\times}D$) with an average body weight of 12.36${\pm}$1.46 kg were used in the test. The gilts were raised individually in metabolism cages and fed a corn-soybean meal-whey basal diet with an addition of 0 or 1 mg/kg of ZEA for 24 d with four levels of natural clay enterosorbent added in the feed. The treatments were: i) control; ii) control+2.5 g/kg clay; iii) control+1 mg/kg ZEA; iv) control+1 mg/kg ZEA+1.25 g/kg clay; v) control+1 mg/kg ZEA+2.5 g/kg clay; vi) control+1 mg/kg ZEA+5.0 g/kg clay; vii) control+1 mg/kg ZEA +10 g/kg clay. Pigs fed diets contaminated with additional purified ZEA had significantly reduced apparent digestibility of crude protein (CP), gross energy (GE) and apparent metabolic rate of GE (ME/GE, p<0.05) without changes of net protein utilization (NPU, p>0.05). Final body weight, average daily gain (ADG), average daily feed intake (ADFI), vulva length, vulva width, vulva area, relative weights of genital organ and proliferative changes of the ovary tissues in gilts fed ZEA-contaminated diet were increased (p<0.05) compared to the gilts fed the control diet. Addition of natural clay enterosorbent in the ZEA-contaminated diet showed a positive protection effect on ZEA feeding, and the protection was increased linearly or quadratically as clay content increased. However, in pigs fed a diet with clay alone at 2.5 g/kg level there was no significant impact (p>0.05) on all the parameters as compared to the control. It is suggested that feeding ZEA at about 1.0 mg/kg for 24 days might result in a deleterious effect in pigs, and addition of 5 or 10 g clay enterosorbent per kg diet can effectively neutralize the detrimental effects of the ZEA feeding.

Quality Improvement of Dried Persimmons Slices during Storage Period using SO2 Treated Pads (SO2 살균패드처리에 의한 감말랭이의 저장 중 품질 변화)

  • The effects of $SO_2$ treated pads ($SO_2$ 0, 0.5, 1, and 2 g/kg) on the quality of dried persimmons slices were investigated. The $SO_2$ treated pads for storage did not affect to weight, moisture loss rate, and soluble solid contents of dried persimmons slices. The color change after storage for 12 weeks was the highest (value = 3.5) in control ($SO_2$ 0 g/kg), whereas that was the lowest (value = 2.0) under $SO_2$ 2 g/kg condition. When we measured the browning degree after 12 weeks, they showed O.D. 0.24, 0.22, 0.20, and 1.7 in serial dilution treated pads with $SO_2$ 0, 0.5, 1, and 2 g/kg, respectively. The decaying rate was the highest (7.0%) in control after 12 weeks storage, whereas it did not show any spoilage in $SO_2$ 1 g/kg and 2 g/kg treated condition for whole storage period. The concentration of residual $SO_2$ in dried persimmons slices was detected within a safe range of 20.3~40.3 ppm. Therefore, the shelf-life of dried persimmons slices was lengthened in $SO_2$ treated pads (especially in $SO_2$ 2 g/kg) for inhibiting of browning and decaying.
