  • Objective: To investigate the three-dimensional lip vermilion changes after extraction and non-extraction orthodontic treatment in female adult patients and explore the correlation between lip vermilion changes and incisor changes. Methods: Forty-seven young female adult patients were enrolled in this study (skeletal Class III patients were excluded), including 34 lip-protruding patients treated by extraction of four first premolars (18 patients requiring mini-implants for maximum anchorage control and 16 patients without mini-implants) and 13 patients requiring non-extraction treatment. Nine angles, seven distances, and the surface area of the lip vermilion were measured by using pre- and post-treatment three-dimensional facial scans. Linear and angular measurements of incisors were performed on lateral cephalograms. Results: There were no significant changes in the vermilion measurements in the non-extraction group. The vermilion angle, vermilion height, central bow angle, height/width ratio, and vermilion surface area decreased significantly after the orthodontic treatment in the extraction groups, but the upper/lower vermilion proportion remained unchanged. Significant correlations were found between the changes in incisor position and those in vermilion angles, vermilion height, and surface area. Conclusions: Extraction of the four first premolars probably produced an aesthetic improvement in lip vermilion morphology. However, the upper/lower vermilion proportion remained unchanged. The variations in the vermilion were closely related to incisor changes, especially the upper incisor inclination changes.

  • Optimization of carnosine and anserine extraction from chicken breast was performed using response surface methodology (RSM) to obtain the maximized physiological activities for anti-glycation and anti-oxidation. The optimum extraction conditions were water extraction for 1.6 h in the case of the 20-wk laying hen muscle and water extraction for 2.12 h in the case of 90-wk laying hen muscle. Higher carnosine and anserine contents were measured in the 20-wk laying hen muscle, along with higher physiological activities, which increased in direct proportion with the dipeptide contents. The extracts prepared from the 20-wk laying hen under optimum conditions showed 57% inhibition of advanced glycated end-product formation, 64% inhibition of lipid peroxidation, and 61% of DPPH radical scavenging effects. On the other hand, 52% inhibition of AGE formation, 62% inhibition of lipid peroxidation, and 53% of DPPH radical scavenging effect were demonstrated within the 90-wk laying hen. In addition, the ratio of carnosine was a key indicator for the physiological activities of the extracts.

  • Many types of information provided through the web including news contents contain unnecessary clutters. These clutters make it difficult to build automated information processing systems such as the summarization, extraction and retrieval of documents. We propose a system that extracts and summarizes news contents from the web. The extraction system receives news contents in HTML as input and builds an element tree similar to DOM tree, and extracts texts while removing clutters with the hyperlink attribute in the HTML tag from the element tree. Texts extracted through the extraction system are transferred to the summarization system, which extracts key sentences from the texts. We implement the summarization system using co-occurrence relation graph. The summarized sentences of this paper are expected to be transmissible to PDA or cellular phone by message services such as SMS.

  • In a language, noun and keyword extraction is a key element in information processing. When it comes to processing Korean language information, however, there are still a lot of problems with noun and keyword extraction. This paper proposes an effective noun extraction method that considers noun emergence features. The proposed method can be effectively used in areas like information retrieval where large volumes of documents and data need to be processed in a fast manner. In this paper, a category-based keyword construction method is also presented that uses an unsupervised learning technique to ensure high volumes of queries are automatically classified. Our experimental results show that the proposed method outperformed both the supervised learning-based X2 method known to excel in keyword extraction and the DF method, in terms o classification precision.

  • A numerical system to extract effective elastic properties of polycrystalline thin-films for MEMS devices is already developed. In this system, the statistical model based on lattice system is used for modeling the microstructure evolution simulation and the key kinetics parameters of given micrograph, grain distributions and deposition process can be extracted by inverse method proposed in the system. In this work, the effects of kinetics parameters on the extraction of effective elastic properties of polycrystalline thin-films are studied by using statistical method. The effects of the fraction of the potential site( $f_{P}$ ) and the nucleation probability( $P_{N}$ ) among the parameters for deposition process of microstructure on the extraction of effective elastic properties of polycrystalline thin-films are studied.d.d.

  • Moving object extraction is one of key research topics for various video services. In this study, a new moving object extraction algorithm is introduced to extract objects using block motion vectors in video data. To do this, 1) a maximum a posteriori probability and Gibbs random field are used to obtain real block motion vectors,2) a 2-D histogram technique is used to determine a global motion, 3) additionally, a block segmentation is fellowed. In the computer simulation results, the proposed technique shows a good performance.

  • Living in the age of information people face problems related to information overload. Information is easy to produce, store and distribute through various communication channels, one of which is emails. With the appearance of the mobile devices, such as smart phones and tabs, people can have access to email inbox at any moment of time from everywhere. In this paper we present information extraction system with a specific goal of extracting meeting location from the announcement of seminar or conference. We apply a machine learning method (conditional random fields, CRF), train the system using annotated corpus of seminar and conference announcements and validate results by applying various extracted correction rules and patterns. Furthermore, we normalize extracted location, and reference using geo-coding databases, OpenStreetMap and Wikipedia resources to determine real geographical coordinates.

  • Accurate and robust image registration is important task in many applications such as image retrieval and computer vision. To perform the image registration, essential required steps are needed in the process: feature detection, extraction, matching, and reconstruction of image. In the process of these function, feature extraction not only plays a key role, but also have a big effect on its performance. There are two representative algorithms for extracting image features, which are scale invariant feature transform (SIFT) and speeded up robust feature (SURF). In this paper, we present and evaluate two methods, focusing on comparative analysis of the performance. Experiments for accurate and robust feature detection are shown on various environments such like scale changes, rotation and affine transformation. Experimental trials revealed that SURF algorithm exhibited a significant result in both extracting feature points and matching time, compared to SIFT method.

  • For monitoring lipid oxidation development in cooked ground pork during refrigerationm, malonaldehydethiobarbituric acid(MA-TBA) contents were measured using high performance liquid chromatography(HPLC). As the oxidation proceeded during refergeration, TBA-reaction substances(TBARS) absorbances increased and the corresponding HPLC peak areas also increased proportationately. The correlation coefficient between the HPLC peak areas and MA-TBA absorbance were 0.9979. The treatemtn of cetrimide, an ion pairing agent, gave a complete resolution of the MA-TBA complex and the butanol extraction of the complex increased its recovery by 37.8%. Both cetrimide treatment and butanol extraction are essential steps for analyzing MA-TBA complex in ground pork wiht HPLC. A reliable and specific measurement of NA-TBA in ground pork was successfully performed using HPLC.

  • Procedures play a key role in ensuring safe operation at nuclear power plants (NPPs). Development and maintenance of a large number of procedures reflecting the best knowledge available in all relevant areas is a complex job. This paper introduces a newly developed methodology and the implemented software, called iExtractor, for the extraction of syntactic and semantic information from NPP procedures utilizing natural language processing (NLP)-based technologies. The steps of the iExtractor integrated with sets of rules and an ontology for NPPs are described in detail with examples. Case study results of the iExtractor applied to selected procedures of a U.S. commercial NPP are also introduced. It is shown that the iExtractor can provide overall comprehension of the analyzed procedures and indicate parts of procedures that need improvement. The rich information extracted from procedures could be further utilized as a basis for their enhanced management.
